Update : NH-63 & NH-4A

Just returned from (south)Goa yesterday (currently in Belgaum).

NH-63 (Hubli-Kalghatgi-Yellapur-Ankola) is in good condition and a beautiful drive.

The section of the NH-17 from the NH-63 junction up to Goa border is not in a great shape and might get worse during the monsoon.

Madgaon-Ponda (~22 km) is good.

Ponda-Mollem-Khanapur-Belgaum (NH-4A) is a beautiful drive too with good roads.

cheers,

Cool! Are the rains that bad? I thought monsoon time is a good time to visit Goa.

How much time it took from Hubli?I plan to visit Goa sometime in August and am planning to drive down.

OT : These are coastal rains - so nothing unusual. Most of the time, it just pours. If you like rains, monsoon should be a good time to visit Goa ; In spite of heavy rains, we didn't face any disruptions e.g. road blocks in South Goa, while there were a few incidents of water logging reported in North Goa. I would prefer South Goa during monsoons. You can drive around.

Hubli-Yellapur-Karwar-Madgaon took us ~ 4.5 hours including a halt of 30 min. (on 5th june)

yellapur to ankola and upwards in Nh17 will be better. You can avoid the small and crowded roads through karwar.

NH 63 meets NH17 between Ankola in the south and Karwar in the north. Thus you would not touch ankola.

also the only stretch i need to watch out for is from chitradurga to haveri and karvar to goa border is it? You are right

All the best. rains have started. be careful of iron ore trucks on NH63. Keep updating this thread after your trip

If you are referring to river rafting in river Kali, then it might just be closed at this time of the year - usually until Aug (?), cos of the heavy rains! I went to a resort 2 yrs back in June to Ganeshgudi and thanks to the heavy rains, even a coracle ride was not possible!!

I did this route exactly a month ago, but in the opposite direction i.e. canacona to bangalore. The roads were fine then, but ofcourse, no saying now.

Sorry, I meant the himoga - sagar - honnavar - ankola - karvar - margao. But, we bypassed ankola. Can't remember how, took some smaller roads I think. But, I was driving and not keeping the log so I can't remember!
