I plan to drive with my wife and kid on her year end vacation to Mysore, the car will be magnum (taking delivery later this weekend) Does any one know about the route conditions? please: Also I need to know the best route to take, I have never driven in this route.

About a month back, the route via Calicut and Wayanad was in good condition except for a few isolated (and tiny) sections inside the Forest after you cross into Karnataka.

Take NH17 from Edapally Byepass Junction, follow it all the way to Calicut, take NH 212 from Calicut and you're in Mysore in about 3 hours (less in your car).

Have fun!

Best route is as follows:
Cochin-Trissur-Palakkad-Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam-Dimbam-Chamarajanagar-Nanjangud-Mysore

Alternatively, from Coimbatore,
Conoor-Ooty-Masinagudi-Gundulpet-Nanjangud-Mysore

Thirdly, from Cochin,
Cochin-Paravur-Kodungallur-Chavakkad-Kunnamkulam-Edapal-Kuttipuram-Kottakkal-Calicut-Kalpetta-Sultan's Battery-Gundulpet-Nanjangud-Mysore

The problem is that the state of the Cochin-Trissur-Palakkad-Coimbatore road is very bad, but I am sure you can monitor its repair (should be undertaken now that the monsoons are almost over).

From Coimbatore, the road via Sathyamangalam is the shortest and road is in good shape barring a few kms on the TN-Karnataka border.

In case you want a little more relaxing route, go via Ooty, but the Mettupalayam-Conooor-Ooty road is bad - you can reach Ooty via Mettupalayam-Kotagiri which is in good shape.

In case the Trissur-Palakkad route does not improve, the only other alternative is to take the longer route via Calicut and Wayanad.

In the first route, assume a 3/4 day drive, the Calicut route could take you almost the whole day, assuming that you will not break in the car too fast and stop by for breakfast/lunch/tea.

Thanks kumar, how long a drive it will be if i take the very first route you mentioned? The roads in trissur - palakkad are still bad though

Check this thead, post 70 onwards. Cochin to most places in South India (or vice versa) is a route thats covered in detail in many threads in the Route Queries subforum. Search and thou shalt find!

Brother

Do you want to BREAK in your car - literally and figuratively? Trichur to Coimbatore is akin to visiting the moon.

Please use the Calicut route - it may be a bit busy, but the surface is good and your car will thank you for it.

Assuming the Trissur-Palakkad roads improve, the drive from Cochin to Coimbatore should take you around 4 hours, and from there via Sathy to Mysore another 4-5 hours, making it around 9-10 hours, making some allowance for navigating through Coimbatore City (go via Ukkadam, Oppanakara Street, Jail Road, Gandhipuram, Ganapathy to reach Sathy road) and bad road sections in TN-Kar border. Distance from Cochin-Coimbatore is 180 kms and from there it is 200 kms to Mysore. Avoid night driving in the stretch between Sathy and Chamarajnagar since you could have wildlife encounters.

Thanks guys! you just made my thought process easy. If I drive it will be via calicut or else I will have to fly to bangalore and then on a taxi to Mys.!!!!

I am planning a trip from Cochin to Mysore. I will be going vial Coimbatore from Cochin to Mysore.

Can you please suggest a different route to Cochin from Mysore while I come from Mysore. Planning to start early morning from Mysore and total distance.

Thanks

Biju

This is a route worth considering mysore-gundulpet-bandipur-Wayanad-Thamarasserry-Kozhikode-Kunnamkulam-Kodungallur-Edappally-Cochin

Two main options.

One via Waynad (Bathery-Calicut-Chavakkad-Kochi) and the other
via Nilambur (Gundlupet-Gudalur-Nilambur-Melatoor-Perinthalmanna-Pattambi-Kunnankulam-Chavakkad-Kochi)

Thanks for the reply

How about touching Coorg also on my way back to Cochin from Mysore.

Please let me know the route in detail.

Regards,

Biju

Mysore-Madikeri(Coorg)

Mysore-Hunsur-Kushalnagar-Madikeri

Madikeri-Cochin

Madikeri-Virajpet-Iritty-Mattanur-Thalasserry-Vadakara-NH17-Kozhikode-Kunnamkulam-Chavakkad-Kodungallur-Edappallly

For updates on the Madikeri-Kerala stretch refer to this thread

hi
since i do one trip every month from almost 12 years, my advise is
1. leave cochin very early morning by 4 am. take NH thro thrissur, palakad and reach coimbatore by 8 am. take a breakfast break at gandhipuram.
2. leave kovai by 9 am thro sathy, hasanur , chamarajanagar to mysore. this is 210 km trip and will need 5 hours. so by 2pm you should check in to the hotel for lunch.
similarly for return journey.
all other routes suggested here do not have
1. decent hotels
2. decent toilets ( i mean decent, not even good)
so when driving with family, thro coimbatore makes lot of sense.
all the way from coimbatore to mysore is absloutely delightful to drive except a stretch from mysore to n gud.

Thanks for all your help.

Since we are going to Mysore via Coimbatore and just because of that we tried to explore to another route. We also had arranged stay at Coorg on the way back.

Will start from Mysore by around 3 PM and reach Coorg. Start from Coorg next day by around 11 AM back via Tellichery.

Could you please suggest some good stop over for lunch, dinner etc.

Thanks,

Biju
