Advice on road-trip plan from Netherlands | Which all countries to drive to?

Hi Team,

I am going to Netherlands next month as my wife works there and we (her sister, her and me) are planning a road trip from there from the 14th of October till the end of October, so around a 12-14 days road trip.

We have charted out a few countries and got a few quotes from Hertz for car rental. We were earlier interested in eastern Europe but it seems car rental companies won't allow you to take their car there except Slovania and Croatia.

So our current chain of though is:

1) Netherlands --> France --> Spain --> Portugal and back

2) Netherlands --> Germany--> Switzerland/Austria--> Italy and back.

Can you guys help me with any information on the places we can map out for this trip? We are interested in more off beat places than big cities although we would not mind seeing a big city or two in between.

I have done the Europe road trip many years back but if doing again, I wouldn't miss the below. Please check the Headout App for more information on the below places.

1) Autobahns of Germany (no speed limits )
2) Blackforest (Germany)
3) Innsbruck (Austria) - Drive from Germany to Italy via Innsbruck is amazing through the Alps
4) Mount Titlis & Jungfraujoch - Jungfraujoch can be reached by train from Lauterbrunnen. Both in Switzerland - scenic and beautiful Alps
5) Venice - City in Water (Gondola rides through the water canals is a must, especially in the evening)
6) Naples - If you are a foodie and love seafood, this is a must visit.
7) Rome - Historic places (better to park your car in a Hotel and take the one day siteseeing trip)
8) Pisa - Leaning tower
9) Parma - Known for the famous cheese (try the pastas in one of the small restaurants in this small town)
10) Luxemburg (beautiful drive through this rich country and few places, refer Head out)

Anywhere in the Alps, try the cable car for scenic views. Train to Jungfraujoch is a breathtaking as well.

Spain was one of the countries that needed a IDP to drive. Please ensure you check that out for Italy as well.

Oh, thank you.

Has anyone done an itenary of a road trip they have done from Amsterdam to Spain and the amazing attractions we could see on the way, some cities, some small town and some off beat destinations?

Italy has a wealth of information, but for Spain the information is limited.

Depends on what you are interested, nature, city, culture, wine regions etc. Also the weather is getting colder so that is another consideration.

Italy is the most common route and quite some places to see enroute.

For Spain you will do most of the travel via France- Reims, Dijon, Lyon, Montpellier (or Aix + Marseille) are nice places to stop on the way. Once in Spain, you can go west via Bilbao to Santiago de Compostella or along the coast to Barcelona.

So we did the trip and it was bonkers.

We did. Germany--> Austria --> Slovenia ---> Croatia and then back the same route.

5500 km in total in 15 days, totally amazing.

Will write an entire thread on this trip with pictures and videos!
