Mumbai - Rajasthan Road Trip

Hi

I am planning a 2 week road trip around Rajasthan starting from Mumbai in November- The itinerary is as follows at present:

Mumbai to Vadodara

Vadodara to Udaipur

Udaipur to Jaipur

Jaipur to Pushkar

Pushkar to Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer to Jodhpur

Jodhpur to Champaner

Champaner to Mumbai

The Vadodara/Champaner stop overs are with some family friends. It is meant to be a relaxed trip so we will spend 3 days in each location.,

While I have done the Jaipur - Udaipur - Mumbai run a couple of times. I would love some advise the following aspects:
1) Are there any watch-outs
2) Any suggestions on the routes
3) Does anyone know if HSRP is mandatory in Gujarat/Rajasthan? Is there a risk of being stopped regularly for the same?

Following this thread. Even I am planning a road trip from Mumbai to Rajasthan in the 2nd Week of November. Skipping Jaipur as we covered it couple of months ago this year along with Ranthambore.

So far my route is:

Mumbai - Ahemdabad
Ahemdabad - Udaipur
Udaipur - Kumbhalgarh
Kumbhalgarh - Jodhpur
Jodhpur - Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer - Mount Abu
Mount Abu - Vadodara
Vadodara - Mumbai

Keeping 2 nights for each location other than the stopovers (Ahemdabad and Vadodara) Are 2 nights at these location enough to explore? Same questions as the OP.

I am in Mumbai and Udaipur is my hometown so I go frequently on this route.

The route is good and you just need to stick to NH, except in Gujarat where you need to use SH, which is good as well.

I generally start at 6 in the morning and reach udaipur by 6-7 PM with usual breaks in between. If you can do that, you can have more days to explore udaipur.

Thanks for the suggestions and may need more especially exploring Udaipur. I would have driven directly to Udaipur had it been just me. I have 4 senior citizens with me so taking it easy by breaking the journey in between. Tempted to drive directly to Udaipur which saves me 1 night and few thousands.

Got it, then it make sense to take a break in between. The road is 90% fine and as I mentioned, be on NH all the way. Also, take the Expressway from Vadodadara to Ahmedabad.

Re: Mumbai - Rajasthan Road Trip

The road condition between Southern Gujarat and Mumbai has become quite deplorable. The journey, which usually takes a much shorter time, took me nearly twice as long due to the poor state of the highway. The road is riddled with potholes, some of which resemble craters on the moon, making the drive both challenging and dangerous. I witnessed several cars and trucks that had broken down along the way, likely due to the harsh road conditions.

This isn't a minor road we're talking about—it's NH48, a major national highway, not just some state highway (SH). Given the current state of the road, I strongly advise against traveling this route unless absolutely necessary. The risks and delays simply aren't worth it at this time.

Has the road condition improved between Mumbai and South Gujarat now? I know it was terrible during and immediately after the monsoon. I am planning on doing a roadtrip to Rajasthan in the third week of December this year.

Hi Saurabh - Would you know if the road condition has improved now? We're booked to go to Udaipur for few days with a 5yr old, my wife & senior citizen parents; vehicle is our 2014 Innova.

See they are upgrading the roads to concrete roads in Maharashtra, so you will still face the issue but try avoiding early morning or night time where trucks are more active and mostly because of them traffic is there.
Other times should be fine.

I see, we were planning to leave at 4am to beat the traffic. Would that be wise or no point? Or is it better to take a train altogether?

Cheers

No No No.
Dont do that.
If you leave at that time, you will get tons of truck blocking the road !
Leave after 6 only.

I did the same mistake of leaving at 4:30 thinking to beat traffic but I got knocked out by the traffic !

.

Is it good to go farthest and come visiting the places one by one? Or start with nearest from Mumbai and come back from the farthest(Udaipur, Mt abu or Jaipur)?
