Re: Hyderabad - Chennai : Route Queries

NH 65 till Narketpally, NAM Expressway till Mederametla, then NH 5 till Chennai is the better route. 4 lanes through out. A few diversions/ uncompleted sections near villages both on NAM and NH 5. But fast route overall.

Oops. I am just seeing this. Anyways thank you bblost and hserus. I completed my trip and below is the route I took.

Outskirts--Chennai bypass-Vandalur-Keelambakkam-ECR-Pondicherry.

and while returning Pondicherry-Tindivanam- Chengalpattu-Chennai bypass-Outskirts. There was very less traffic in this route and was able to cover the distance comfortably.

Re: Hyderabad - Chennai : Route Queries

Drove to Hyderabad from Chennai today. Took the route suggested on this thread. Started at 7:03AM and reached my grandfather's house in Alwal, Secunderabad at 6:04PM.

Total time - 11Hours including 1.5hours of stops for breakfast, lunch, tea and fuel.
Distance - 651kms
Average Speed - 68.5km/h

Break-up :
* Home (Alandur) to Puzhal - 45 minutes, 24kms.
* Puzhal to Amaravati restaurant in Gudur - 113kms, 1 hour 45 minutes.
* Gudur to Medarametla - 200 kms, 2hours 10minutes.
* Medarametla to lunch stop at Mriyalaguda - 149 kms, 2 hours 35minutes.
* Mriyalaguda to BP petrol bunk in Lakkaram - 95kms, 1 hour 10 minutes
* Lakkaram to Nehru ORR entry towards Karimnagar - 23kms, 20 minutes
* Nehru ORR to exit at Karimnagar - 36kms, 30 minutes
* Karimnagar exit to Home at Alwal via Bolarum - 13kms, 25 minutes.

The route throughout is very good except for 5 diversions and unmarked speedbreakers on NAM expressway.

As soon as you exit Adankki there are a set of three unmarked speedbreakers, for which I somehow managed to slow down to 30 before running over them luckily they were small. The rest on the route are either visible or are in village entry points so you don't have a chance of missing them.

There was a lot of truck traffic from home till Ongole. The speed limit on ORR seems to have been reduced from 120kmph to 100kmph. Except some 15kms on the NAM highway the entire stretch is smooth and four laned with minimal traffic.

After doing a little research on Google stopped at Khaleel Family dhaba on Mriyalaguda bypass. Do stop here if you land up around lunch time, really clean restrooms and dining area along with good dhaba style food. The Dum biryani is tasty.

Had a narrow escape from getting a ticket for over speeding somewhere on the outskirts of Ongole. My younger brother did get one last year when we were returning home (98kmph in apparently a 60kmph zone) and this time I was cautious after I crossed N5 food plaza and maintained 80kmph. Just as I exited Ongole thought there would not be an interceptor and exactly 2kms down the road just as I was around 95kmph I spotted the interceptor just 50 metres ahead. There was truck on the left lane and I was in the middle, looks like the container blocked the camera just as I was near him and I did not get pulled over at the checkpost down the road.

I drove at a very comfortable pace of 120kmph, when possible, till Ongole and then not exceeding 110kmph, where possible, for the rest of the way. There was a lot of truck traffic till Ongole which made me slow down many times.

Re: Hyderabad - Chennai : Route Queries

Hi Everyone

Myself and my brother-in-law are thinking of hyderabad - chennai on a 100cc bike. The journey can be spread over 2 days. Ideally it would be nice if we can do it on 1 day like start in the morning at 5.00am from hyd and reach chennai by 6.00 pm. worst case scenario we can stop in between and spread the journey for two days. I had the following questions:

The bike is Mahindra Centuro. which was purchsed in august 2015. It has a current reading of around 28000kms on the odo. We had got the oil change and chain sproket changed last month say around 12-1500 kms ago. The technical specifications of the bike are as follows :

Brake system :
Tyre Size
Front :-2.75 - 18,
Rear :-3.0 - 18
Tyre Type : Tube
Radial Tyres:Yes
Wheel Size
Front :-18 inch,
Rear :-18 inch
Front Brake: Drum
Rear Brake : Drum
Front Brake Diameter:130 mm
Rear Brake Diameter: 130 mm

Engine:
Engine Type :Single Cylinder, 4 Stroke, Air Cooled, MCI 5 Engine
Displacement: 106.7 cc
Mileage : 85.4 Kmpl(The bike being used gives a max of 55kmpl)
Maximum Power : 8.4 bhp @ 7500 rpm
Maximum Torque :8.5 Nm @ 5500 rpm
Starting :Kick and Self Start
Maximum Speed :92 Kmph
Cooling System : Air Cooled
Gear Box:4 Speed

Technical specifications Source: gaadi.com

While we go at an average speed of 60-70kmph with a break of 15-20 mins every 200 kms ,I wanted to know what are some of the things which have to be kept in mind while going on the highway on a two wheeler in india? Also will the cops stop if its a vehicle which is out of state.

Request response as soon as possible.

Regards
Sushil

Re: Hyderabad - Chennai : Route Queries

The one thing you can keep in mind is that you may have to plan your halts a bit more, as you'll go much slower than usual highway speeds .. so look for reviews and find a hotel or lodge midway that suits your riding style.

Drive slowly and sensibly, use helmets, don't run red lights etc and cops have zero excuse to stop you. If they do stop you, you can always show them the toll receipts.

You might get rather higher than 55 kmpl when you're doing a steady speed on the highway, with limited gear changes and less stop / start traffic. That maximum mileage thing is generally highway mileage.

Bah yes. Bike. Anyway there should be highway restaurant bills, hotel key etc you can keep to show as proof in case they ask or even care rather than "fining" you a slightly higher amount and telling you to leave.

Better to keep the fuel bills from Hyderabad with the Vehicle number entered in it and a valid Pollution certificate, Insurance document(Original) as well.

WHY

I did this trip on my 14 year old bike in May (2017) (Hyderabad - Chennai : Route Queries).

From your post, its appears that neither you nor your brother in law have experience in long distance biking. I would strongly advice that you drop this idea. Its not worth it.

The poor person who agrees to sit as a pillion will curse the rider for a very long time.

To sum it up, its definitely doable. On a 100cc with a pillion doing it over two days is a good idea. But I have no idea why anyone will want to do this on such a boring road.

Re: Hyderabad - Chennai : Route Queries

Driving from Hyd to Kanchi with family- We are taking a break at Nellore. From Nellore is it recommened to continue onto the Chennai route before taking the bypass to the Bangalore Highway
or cutoff the Chennai highway from Gudur & take the Renigunta - Puttur highway to Kanchi

Pros/cons of the 2 routes - timing, 2 lane vs 4 lane etc ?

I would suggest you to take the Naidupeta-Renigunta-Tiruttani-Arakkonam-Kanchipuram route for the following reasons:

1. There is construction work on NH5 once you cross Tada.
2. Chennai bypass is OK, but from Maduravoyal to Kanchipuram is a bloody mess if you are doing in daytime. Poorly maintained roads with moderate to heavy traffic.
3. 2 sections have wide 2-lane roads. Only the final 2-lane section you have to be careful.

- Naidpeta-Renigunta is super wide 2-lane. Be wary of heavy traffic after sundown, so day drive is recommended.
- Renigunta-Tiruttani is tolled wide 2-lane.
- Tiruttani-Kanchipuram would be the slowest section, where you have to drive carefully.

Re: Hyderabad - Chennai : Route Queries

Hello folks,

Doing this route on 21st early hours if not starting by 11:00 am on 20th Jan.
Elder son's Parent teacher meeting was schedule with a very short notice at 9:00 am on 20th Jan. Hence forced to think about starting late from Chennai.

How are the road conditions post coastal monsoons now?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Maverick79.

Re: Hyderabad - Chennai : Route Queries

Hi Team,
Will be driving to Chennai this weekend and my final destination is a place near Sri Ramachandra Hospital, Porur Lake. I will get onto the Chennai by-pass after Puzhal Jail. But where do I get off the by-pass? Is there an exit point from the by-pass just before the Vanagaram Toll booth (GMap says so) or should I get down at the Madurvoyal exit and take the internal roads to reach Porur lake?
Thanks.

Google Maps is right. Once you cross Maduravoyal exit on the bypass, stay on the right most lane just 50 meters before the toll, There is a u-turn allowed and immediately you need to take a left turn, (if you miss the left then you are in trouble as you will have to go till maduravoyal and get back) and then another left. it takes you to ramachandra hospital. Hardly 10 minutes from the toll plaza. you will see a lot of vehicles taking this route.
