Hi all

I'm planning a roadtrip with my family in end of September or 1st week of October once the rains subside. Our plan below.

• Day 1 : Leave from Pune at 5AM. Reach Murudeshwara by evening (13 HRS as per GMaps)
• Day 2 : Roam around in Gokarna/Murudeshwara
• Day 3 : Leave from Murudeshwara at 5AM. Reach Ooty by evening (13 HRS as per GMaps)
• Day 4 & 5 : Explore Ooty
• Day 6 (A): Leave Ooty by 6AM. Reach Mysore by 10. (4 HRS from Ooty to Mysore per GMaps)
• Day 6 (B): Visit Mysore Palace or Chamundeshwari Temple.
• Day 6 (C): Visit Payana Car Museum.
• Day 6 (D): Leave Mysore to Hampi by afternoon. Reach Hampi by night (7HRS from Mysore to Hampi as per GMaps)
• Day 7 & 8 : Explore Hampi
• Day 9 : Leave from Hampi at 5AM. Reach Pune by evening (11 HRS as per GMaps)

Questions :

1. Is the plan do-able ? Any changes/suggestions are appreciated.
2. Pune to Kolhapur route looks OK. But from Kolhapur to Murudeshwara, I see many warning signs on GMaps. Can someone please confirm the route status ?
3. I see that there is some restriction to travel from Ooty to Mysore between 9PM to 6AM. Alternate suggested route shows 7 HRS while the normal route is 4 HRS. Hence planning to leave Ooty towards Mysore at 6AM. Can someone please confirm if the restriction is still in place ? Unable to find latest updates online.
4. Can I do Chamundeshwari Temple and Payana by afternoon and leave for Hampi ?
5. I’ve put 2 days for Hampi. We are travelling with our 4 year old. I know Hampi has a lot of places to explore on foot. Is 2 days recommended or can I finish it up in a day ?
6. Another suggestions or recommendations are highly appreciated.

PS : We are 3 travelling in a 2023 Honda City 5th Gen Facelift MT.

You can do the other way as well. Pune -> Hampi -> Mysuru -> Ooty -> Coastal Karnataka -> Pune. By this you save at least one hour between Mysuru and Ooty. If you are new to mountain roads, please note that the road between Masinagudi and Ooty is steep with 36 hairpin bends.

In case you are sticking to your plan, please note that Google Maps show a shorter route from Ooty to Mysuru and it is allowed only to local vehicles (TN 43). You may have to add another one (and half) hour to your plan.

Issue with this is that I'll reach Mysore in the evening. Due to which I might get traffic, miss Payana and most importantly I don't want to enter ghat road at nights. From my planned route I'll reach Ooty in the evening itself.

I know Kalhatty is just for TN43 ones. Google suggested me 2 routes apart from this. One is a longer one towards Muthanga and Mulehole (7 HRS) and the other one is Gudalur route towards Thorapply (4 HRS). Is Gudalur-Thorapply also reserved for TN43 ?

Important places in Hampi is one day affair. I would suggest you to hire a guide before you reach Hampi. They will plan all the important places from morning 9AM to evening 5PM meticulously. Maybe on second day, you can tour on your own if any attractions you feel is left out.

In Mysore, Palace is a must visit. If visiting for the first time, do hire a guide here as well. Chamundeshwari Temple is usually crowded on special days and weekends, keep half a day for it. If time permits, you can also visit Shri Venugopalaswamy Temple at KRS back waters (Before 6PM). This temple was submerged for several years and excavated recently and reconstructed on the banks of KRS back water. Very serene place.

I am planning to go for a Motorcyle trip with another RE and below is what we are thinking off (since we want both the mountains and the coastal road)

10th Nov --> Pune to Hampi (NH 65, 52) ~ 600K ~ 15Hr (with Breaks etc.)
11th Nov --> Hampi to Ooty via Masinagudi ~ 550K ~ 15Hr
12th Nov --> Rest
13th Nov --> Ooty to Gokarna Via Udupi ~ 600K ~ 15Hr
14th Nov --> Rest
15th Nov --> Gokarna to Goa
16th Nov --> Rest
17th Nov --> Goa to Pune

Though I would have preferred to start on the 9th Morning, but since my partner cannot. please advise if this is comfortably do-able.

Mysore Palace is also something I have heard about a lot, but do not know how to fit the same into this schedule!

Also the fact that there are steep hairpin bends after Masinagudi, is this stretch suggested to be traversed after sunset or late afternoon?

How was your drive from Pune to Gokarna? Does the route possess any challenges? Was the drive comfortable, or any major diversions to look out for?
Which route did you take and how much time did it take you including the breaks?

I am planning a trip from Pune to Gokarna this week and any leads would be warmly appreciated.
