Re: All Roads to Kerala

Guys, any recent travelers from Kochi to Gavi? What is the preferred route and how is the road condition from Vandiperiyar to Gavi?

And how is the road condition from Vadakkencherry to Trichur?

Re: All Roads to Kerala

I am planning to drive from Bangalore to Shoranur this week end and would be taking the Bangalore - Gundlupet - Gudalur - Nilabur- Pattambi - Shoranur route.

Can you please update the present road condition in this route.

Thanks,
Sathish

Any particular reason for taking this route? Bangalore-Salem-Coimbatore-Palakkad-Shornur would be faster and you get the 4 lane almost all through now.

There is work happening in the Mysore-Gundlepet stretch (Mostly done, but some diversions). Theppakadu-Gudalur (~20km) is like an off road track and the Nadugani churam is recovering from landslides due to recent rains(Roads should be ok though).

So unless you have any compelling reason to take this route, would recommend the Salem-Palakkad route.

Re: All Roads to Kerala

Dear Experts,

I am planning to drive down from Bangalore to Mararikulam on Saturday morning. Planning to start at 4:00am and my car is an Ertiga ZDI. I have checked this thread and it appears that the fastest route is

Bangalore-Salem-Bhavani-Avinashi- Coimbatore- Walayar-Palakkad- Trishur- Kochi- Mararikulam

Is this the best option for me?

I have read that Coimbatore has a bypass does Palakkad/Trishur and Kochi also have by-passes? I am hearing of metro construction at Kochi, is there any route which will get me into Mararikulam bypassing Kochi? Will I be able to complete this journey in about 10 hrs with minimal stops/decent avg speed?

Greatly appreciate your advice. Thanks!

This route is fine, especially for a 4am start.
Palakkad also has a bypass, you don't need to get inside the town. You may encounter slow moving traffic from mannuthy onwards but should be manageable. Watch out for potholes after Vadakkencherry, saw recent posts saying some are very deep. Also heard about a no overtaking zone in the kuthiran section and presence of cops checking both speeding and overtaking.

Sorry, no idea about your route query beyond Kochi.

Yes, there is traffic congestion in Cochin due to crawling metro construction works. However, towards Alappuzha taking NH is the best option. You can also take Aluva-Kalamassery-Seaport Airport road and reach Irumbanam-Petta-Kundannur to rejoin NH towards Alappuzha. This will bypass Edappally-Palarivattom-Vyttila signals.

Re: All Roads to Kerala

Anyone knows the expected travel time between Parambikkulam reserve and Valparai?

I have made a booking at Parambikkulam on Nov 7th and is planning to return to Kochi via Valparai. I would like to spend one day at Valparai in one of the estate Bangalows (Monica or Sirukundra) on Nov 8th if I can reach Valaparai by around 2 PM. Is this possible if I checkout from Parambikkulam by around 9 30 - 10 AM?
Google maps is showing a route through Sethumadai-Aliyar-Valaprai which is ~90kms.

I have taken Tenkasi - Punalur - Pathanapursm - Adoor - Pandalam stretch on 15 October. There are some potholes in between Tenkasi - Punalur stretch. Few of them are little dangerous ones. Some are in the middle of the road and drive carefully. Again Punalur - Pathanapuram stretch is also bad.

Should be the best option. Other option is Chavakkad-Ponnani-Chamravatam-Tirur-Parappanangadi-Chaliyam-Calicut (or Chelari-Calicut). But will take similar time in spite of being shorter. Maybe slightly less stressful.

Be prepared for very heavy traffic throughout.

The Chamravattom-Tirur-Parappanangadi stretch sees quite heavy traffic, hence it might end up slower. There were a couple of rough patches immediately after and a little before the Chamravattam bridge (update from the first week of October). And the approach to the bridge is through narrow, winding roads, which would increase the travel time.

Re: All Roads to Kerala

Returned from Edappally to Bangalore. Mannuthy - Vadakkenchery (Kuthiran et al) has been patched up. The ride is much better. Though a bit bumpy due to the uneven patch work you don't have to worry about those potholes anymore.

Also, the toll before Avinashi (after L&T bypass on the Coimbatore - Salem stretch) which was on a test mode has become operational now (Rs. 80 one way for cars).

Rest was as usual.

Re: All Roads to Kerala

Just back to home @ Payyanur after a trip to Guruvayur (via Chelari-Tirur-Chamravattom - Ponnani - Chavakkad), next day morning Guruvayur - Thrippunithura (via Vypin, Eranakulam). From Thrippunithura came to Kappad Beach (via Marine drive, Container Road, Aluva, Thrissur, Pannithadam, Edappal, Ramanattukara) and stayed at Renai Kappad Beach Resort for a night. Next day came back to Payyanur.

The gmap route is as below
https://www.google.co.in/maps/dir/Pa...10.5952496!3e0

https://www.google.co.in/maps/dir/Gu...12.1050687!3e0
  1. Moidu Bridge was closed while going to Guruvayur, so we had to take detour via Kadachira which ate 2hrs due to the heavy traffic
  2. The road around BP Angadi - Chamravattom Bridge has occassional potholes.
  3. Took the Vypin route to see the Goshree route, there are few very narrow bridges in route. In fact I planned to take the Cherai beach route to Vypin, but this road is not in good condition now. Local people told us not to take that route.
  4. While coming back, took Pannithadam route to bypass Kunnamkulam
  5. For bypassing Valanchery, took Moodal - Kanjippura route (road condition is not so good, I am not sure if I saved time or not)
