Did the stretch two weeks back. The stretch from Alleppey till we cross the bridge near Ambalappuzha (~13 kms) is not that good. Again, the stretch between Kayamkulam and Harippad is also not good, with frequent bad potholes.
The rest of the route is good, only issue is constant traffic which gets worse in case you are doing it during peak hours.

Thanks. I am driving from Thrissur and is planning to start at 4 AM. But return will be in the afternoon and is expecting heavy traffic.

Did Bangalore-Mysore on 6th Dec via Kanakpura-Malavalli-Bannur due to Kaveri protests at Mandya. The road around Bannur is in bad condition for few kms.

Mysore-Gudalur-Perinthalmanna-Trichur did yesterday evening. The road is good at most of the places. There are small potholes around Theppakadu and big ones after Vazhikadavu.

Started from KRS road at around 6.00pm, took ring road and joined Mysore-Nanjangud road at around 6.15 (I personally feel not worth to take the ring road unless it is very peak time).

Gudalur - 8.30pm
Nilambur - Wandoor - Pandikkad - Perinthalmanna - Kulappully - Wadakkancherry - Trichur round at 11.45pm

Overall, the condition is good to excellent for areas mentioned otherwise.
(Car - Innova, non stop)

Hi,

I am going to Calicut from Bangalore through Muthanga this month end. Does it make sense to reach the checkpost after Gundlupet at 6:00 am? Will there be a Que of vehicles especially trucks waiting for the gate to open at 6:00?

Planning to take the Kanakpura-Malavalli-Chamarajpet route.

Cheers

Vinod

Did Bglr - Thrissur yesterday.

Route taken - Bglr - Hosur - Palakkode - Thoppur - Mettur - Bhavani - Avinashi - CBE - PLKD - TCR

Route conditions -
1. Hosur - Palakkode - Thoppur - Mettur - Bhavani -->
Hosur - Palakkode has potholes, can do average 40km per hr.
Palakkode - Thoppur is in good condition, can do 55 km per hr avg, note that there is a railway crossing in between, we lost 20 mts here. expect lot of truck/bus traffic & fog early morning.
if you join national highway before Thoppur, you will pay Rs 79 just for 15 km.
Thoppur - Mettur is good road, can do 55 km per hr avg
Mettur - Bhavani is average to bad, lot of bad stretches, expect 30 km per hr avg

In a nutshell, if travel time is not a priority, want to see some good roadside view, want to save 30 km and Rs 250 in tolls, take this route. consider 1.5 hr extra compared to the NH route.

Between Palakkad and Trichur, road is drivable, around 15 km between Wadakkumchery and Pattikad is bad, but manageable.

Pretty good. The only stretch to watch out is between Alleppey and Kayamkulam. Just after Alleppey it's bad and after that many sections till Kayamkulam are patched up and wont be comfortable. Took this route a month back.

Did the Thrissur-Trivandrum-Thrissur drive on Sunday. Not much change in the road condition. Some sections between Alleppey and Kayamkulam is still patched up and uneven. Not very comfortable.

Re-tarring was going on in some of these sections and may be we will see better roads in couple of weeks.

From EKM to Trivandrum, would suggest to take the allapey-Changanassery (AC) road to connect to MC road, and then continue the TVM journey via the MC road.

The AC road is re-tarred recently resulting in wider tarmac in excellent condition, except for very few stretches which are yet to be re-tarred.
In MC road, there is less traffic and wider roads for easy overtaking, plus excellent road surface.

Driving down from Chennai to Trivandrum. The plan is to go via Nagercoil. Need suggestions on places to have food on the way. Is there another alternative route that will not be tiring?

What is the condition of road from Coimbatore to trissur via NH-47 with infamous roads at kuthiran. Last august travelled via ottapalam but not convinced on the route.

It is still bad, alternate routes are still preferred and reccomended.

Any update/review of the alternate routes between Palakkad and Trichur? Especially, the one via Shornur. Is this in good condition? How is the traffic on this route? I assume lot of vehicles might be doing this route considering the fact that NH47 is in pretty bad state.

Thanks, Rajitp!

In the second option, how is the Wadakanchery-Thrissur stretch? How long is this? Do you know what is extra kms we've to do on this this route compared to the first option?

Rex

Maybe a difference of approximately 10kms between the two.

Intend driving to Chennai from Kochi on 22 Dec. Given that priority is given to good roads and a scenic drive, Which of the following routes would you suggest:
1) The traditional Kochi- Thrissur( Mannuthy)- Palakkad- Erode- Salem- Krishnagiri- Vellore Chennai; or
2) Kochi- Munnar- Theni- Periyakulam- Dindigul- Tiruchirappally- Villupuram- Chennai

I had driven till Salem in October and the state of roads were not so pretty till Coimbatore then.
If anyone has done the second route, kindly advice on the state of roads particularly after Dindigul

I would not reccomend the option 1 because of bad roads between Thrissur and Avinashi and again 6 laning in progress between Krishnagiri and Vellore.

Option 2,there is 6 laning in progress around Dindigul, yet another option is to link to your option 2 via Salem. (Kochi-Wadakancheri-Alathur-Pollachi-Salem-Attur-Ulundurpet-Chennai)
