Vadodara to Dehradun: Route Suggestions

Hello Everyone,

We ( Me and my wife ) are planning to travel to Dehradun after January. It will be strictly a work trip, so we are not planning on any sightseeing. Searching Google Maps gave us two route options:

1. Vadodara - Dahod - Ratlam - Kota - Deoli - Noida - Meerut - Saharanpur - Dehradun
2. Vadodra - Ahmedabad - Udaipur - Ajmer - Jaipur - Rohtak - Kaithal - Saharanpur - Dehradun

We are planning to complete the trip in 3 days with two overnight stays because of my medical condition, as I'm the only driver. We plan on starting early by 5:30am or 6:00am everyday.
Could you all kindly suggest the best route to take among these and other inputs too, if any.

Re: Vadodara to Dehradun: Route Suggestions

Route 2 is just too much traffic.

Godhra-Dahod-Dhar-Ghatibillod NH47 is good all through. Even Machaliya ghat was good when we drove June 2023.

You basically have 2 choices of either taking Delhi-Bombay expressway either via Jhabua-Thandla or Ghatibillod-Lebad-Ratlam.

NE4 will get you to Bhanapura on the other end. Head towards Jhalawar (not Udpura as GMaps suggests). Jhalawar-Kota-Jaipur is good all through.

If you want to take the Laslot-Delhi section of NE4. Go via Jaipur bypass and NH21 from there towards Dausa. Don't take the NH23 shortcut Google maps suggests.

Am not aware of conditions beyond Delhi.

With early morning starts, fog is a problem. When we drove Jaipur-Kota, there was lingering light fog till 1 pm. We started at 930am from Jaipur, so it did not affect any visibility. We did experience fog in pockets when we driving Biaora-Bhopal in the early morning hours.

Re: Vadodara to Dehradun: Route Suggestions

I am unaware of the conditions of NE4 beyond Lalsot towards Vadodara, but considering you are travelling as a family and want to break the journey, I will stick with route 2. With some changes, from Jaipur you can come on the NE4 via the bypass On the NE4, you can take the exit on WPE and go towards Palwal and beyond towards Merut and beyond to Dehradun.

Thank you This was very helpful as we were not sure where to enter Delhi - Mumbai Expressway in between. It was one of the reasons, we were oscillating more towards Route 1, as it was a tried and tested route. Other being lack of good restaurants in between as I could gather from some youtube videos.
Would you have any idea about good hotels on the way for overnight stay ?

Thank you sir When we are going through the pictures of through route in Gmaps, in many places Google maps shows taking shortcuts through ongoing construction sites of Delhi - Mumbai Expressway it seems. I thought it would be a hassle if I missed a turn somehow and it's not like you can trust Google maps either.

You can try Clarks Premier Kunadhi at Kota for day 1 stay. I think you'll (almost) reach your destination on day 2.

I booked and almost stayed here this holiday season, but had replan last minute.

Hi! I did this route recently during Christmas but from Dehradun to Vadodara. My route was Meerut, KMP, NE-4 (Lalsot Exit) and took night break at Bundi. Total drive time was 8.5 hrs.

From Bundi, continued on NH-52 till Jhalarpatan and then took right to connect to NE-4 (MP section) exited at Thandla and then took Indore-Amd highway for Vadodara (near Jhabua). Total drive time including breaks was 9 hrs approx.

Hope this helps!

Re: Vadodara to Dehradun: Route Suggestions

Well I completed my journey. Took the route from Vadodara - Dahod - Ratlam - Kota - Deoli - Noida - Meerut -Roorke - Dehradun.

Just a heads up the section of NH 147D before joining NE4 is seriously bad. Go slow and careful through this section.

You get two separate sections NE4 with almost 419 kms of uninterrupted tarmac that’s some part boring due to little to no traffic.

The roads from Kota onwards are superb. Clear lane markings and less traffic. We decided to stay in Faridabad so had to face some Delhi traffic. I think taking EPE towards Delhi- Meerut Expressway might be better to avoid Delhi congestion. Avoid Saharanpur route also since the road in single lane with average traffic.

A road Trip from Vadodara to Dehradun and back on my Nexon

This is my first Tlog on this forum so please pardon any mistakes. I did not take any picture of the car or the roads since I am not very fond of taking pics (just me and my idiosyncrasies).

The Vehicle: 2023 Tata Nexon (old version). Named Lava (Geologist and his likes! The car is Red)
Trip participants: Me, the wife and two kids aged 11/12 (turned a year older in the trip) and 6 years
Journey: from Vadodara to Dehradun and back, covered from 28 Oct 2024 to 11 Nov 2024

The path: Vadodara-Kota-Gurgaon-Dehradun and back

Lets get down to the journey
We had planned a trip to Dehradun, where my in-laws are based, for Diwali vacations. I had attempted to book train tickets exactly on the day the reservations opened, but got a WL-4. The hope was that it would get confirmed by the journey time which was 120 days away. As days wore on, no changes were observed. A few days before the day, my wife casually suggested that we can do a road trip.
There were some problems.
Firstly both my wife and son have road sickness. I tend to measure distances by the number of vomit breaks we take. For example Silchar-Agartala is 8 breaks and Vadodara-Saputara is 2. Vadodara-Mumbai is 3.
Secondly, the longest I have driven in a day is 400km and this journey was 1400km long. I tentatively planned to cover the distance in 3 days but also kept hope that the train tickets come through.
On the day before the travel, I came back from office after taking tentative leaves without any concrete plans. To cut a long story short, the tickets did not get confirmed and suddenly we changed plans to pack smartly and take the road trip after all. My kids were excited and I slept well thankfully.

The day 1: We woke at 7 AM and took a bath and packed some snacks and water. Loaded the luggage and went to the kids' school to attend a PTM. I had planned to leave at 9 AM but that turned to 11AM and off we went. Crossing Vadodara city quickly, we hit the Vadodara-Halol State Highway. The movement was done in decent time and through well known roads. Post Halol, we took the NH-47 towards Jhabua (MP) via Godhra, Dahod and Meghnagar. The roads were decent but had good amount of traffic, which were a mix of heavy trucks and bikes with smattering of cars. It took us 3 hours to cover the distance to Meghnagar. Took a couple of quick biobreaks and tea breaks. Reached Thandla at 3.30PM where we took a lunch break at OM Restaurant. It was a mix of good and disastrous food. However it is the only decent food joint in the entire stretch, with decent washrooms. Service is okayish and food is decent. Post light lunch we hit the NE4 towards Kota. It was the first time that I used the cruise control and it was a revelation. I became a fan of this invention instantly. We covered the distance to Chechat exit, where the current opened stretch ends, in about 2.5 hours. I admit that I did cross the speed limit of 120 KMPH on occasions.
After exiting at Chechat toll, we took some village roads to join the NH-52 towards Kota. We passed painfully slow through Dara pass and Mukundara tiger reserve in complete darkness. After that, open roads with somewhat decent traffic greeted us and we reached Kota at 8.30PM. I had booked a hotel the previous night. The hotel, Surya Plaza was expecting us since the evening. Thankfully they checked us in quickly and we ordered dinner, as kids were famished. They had not eaten much since morning. The hotel is quite good and rooms are quite well done. It is a good business hotel and highly recommended. The food arrived and it was polished off quickly. The food was very good and the Caesar salad was fresh and well made. We just dropped off to sleep. Sleep quality is good here.

Day 2: We woke up late around 8 AM and went to take breakfast. the spread was decent and service was quite good overall. I usually take my own good time post breakfast as otherwise the wife and son don't travel well. We checked out at 11 AM and started for Gurgaon via the "Mega Highway" to sawai Madhopur. The road is actually a 2 lane Highway passing through villages and has good amount of traffic throughout. Me and the wife appreciated the scenery all around, as both of us are geologists and Rajasthan is our academic Karmabhumi. The hills of Rajasthan always have a special place in both our hearts. The roads are decent but have lots of scope for improvement. The tolls are not worth it though. It took us about 1.5 Hrs to reach Sawai Madhopur exit of NE4, which is the last exit of the opened stretch of this Expressway from Gurgaon. Once we hit the expressway, its blissful. The roadside amenities are not opened yet till Dausa exit. The roadside break areas are deserted and not recommended for a stop. Post Dausa/Lalsot exit area, the traffic is higher and roadside amenities are well working. We stopped at one just after the Dausa exit which had lots of options like Starbucks, KFC, Pizzahut, Vango and others. We had little food including some Dosa, Pizza and a small ice-cream. We covered the distance upto Sohna Exit from Sawai Madhopur in about 4 hrs with the journey done mostly on cruise control. From Sohna Exit to Sector 42 in Gurgaon took us about an hour with moderate traffic. We went to my cousin's house there. The next few hours passed happily with kids and elders enjoying good food and adda. Also to note, Gurgaon has the cheapest alcohol in my knowledge. Sleep came late for the grownups as we kept chatting to the annoyance of the kids.

Day 3: Again we woke up late and resumed the adda and good food. Somehow, my plans to leave by 9 AM turned into 12 PM. We took the Western Peripheral Expressway to Meerut Expressway. Till the end, the journey was good though traffic was quite high. Post exit from Meerut Expressway, the problems started. Meerut bypass does not deserve the name as it is very very crowded and movement is painful. No traffic sense and less civic sense was palpable. The journey to Muzzafarnagar bypass was again slow. Infact the road till Haridwar via Roorkee bypass is slow moving overall. The road passes through Haridwar city. It has good number of flyovers and underpasses and surprisingly the passage was quick. But after that again the roads are crowded till Motichur. It was already dark when we passed through so could not see the jungles around. The road to Dehradun has been widened and made smooth over the last few years. That is a welcome change and appreciated. Even though the progress was slowish, we managed to cover the distance from Haridwar in about an hour and a quarter. Crossed the Dehradun traffic and reached home by 7 PM.

Overall, the last day was 250 KM, it took us about 6 hours of driving time. Same as covering 450 Km on day 2.

Some observations have been made in another post in another part of the forum.
https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/route...ml#post5875567 (Delhi - Mumbai : Route Queries)
Overall, the toll from Vadodara to Dehradun was around Rs 2500 and fuel cost us around Rs 12500. I used tankful to tankful method to measure efficiency and found that the best mileage I got was 19 KMPL on day 2 from Kota to Gurgaon. More that 2/3 of the road was Expressway so understandable. The worst efficiency was about 11 KMPL on Gurgaon to Dehradun, which also is explainable.

Nexon is a very competent Highway rider. At no point did I feel any discomfort and felt insecure even at high speeds. The kids sitting in the back had lots of space to move and hence no fatigue was felt even after 3 days on the road. Interestingly, my wife and son did not feel road sick even once throughout. A testament to stability of the car and my improved driving. But also them eating Oranges periodically and keeping a gap between meals and travelling. Both are homegrown ideas but worked (Touch Wood)

Re: A road Trip from Vadodara to Dehradun and back on my Nexon

We spend a bliss 10 days in Dehradun relaxing, chilling and eating. Went to all old hangout places that were the Wife's fav during her college days. We love Kalsang restaurant for Tibetan food and also Ellora bakery. Both these are icons of Dehradun. We celebrated Halloween (my daughter's favorite), Diwali, Bhaiduj and my son's Birthday.

One day suddenly the kids wanted to see Ganga which was briefly glimpsed close at Haridwar during our travel. So a sudden plan was made to visit Rishikesh. We just piled on the car. This time along with us my FIL and Aunt-in-law joined us.

The Dehradun Rishikesh distance is around 40 odd KM via decent roads. We took Raipur-Thano-route avoiding the main highway, rejoining the main highway a little before Rishikesh city starts. the road takes us via quaint villages and farmlands. A visual delight.

We started at around 11 AM and reached before 1 PM and went straight to Janki Setu area. We were informed by friends earlier that Laxman Jhula was closed for repairs. This news was sad as kids also wanted to see Laxman Jhula. So Janki Setu it was. Janki Setu has good parking lot and one needs to walk to the other side where lots of Ashrams are located and river banks are cleaner. So we walked across the river and reached a nice beach just below the bridge. The only drawback was cowdung everywhere. Nevertheless the kids took a good dip and adults also dipped their toes. Some 'punya' earned maybe.
We walked back for some food. We saw a decent looking joint called Hotel Kailash at the parking lot only. We had good lunch of roti, sabzi, daal and fresh lime soda. Food was good and tasty. We were told that Ganga Aarti was good at Parmarth Niketan ashram river banks which was on the other side. So we trudged back again and reached the Parmarth Ashram at 3 PM. Apparently the aarti was scheduled at 6.30 PM with gates to the venue opening at 4.30 PM. So started endless wait with two not so happy kids and tired adults. It took us prayers and patience to cover the time. The gates were opened at 4.30 and it filled up in no time. River bank is clean and most people were well mannered and polite.

Bhajans started at 5 and created a good atmosphere till 6.30. By that time the sun had set and Ganga Aarti started and was conducted very nicely. It seemed a bit too rehearsed and stretched but created a good vibe overall. My wife befriended a lady who had travelled alone from Dehradun for the aarti. We gave her a lift back to Dehradun. The roads were very crowded inside the city and it took us more than an hour to reach the highway from the Parking lot. It was frustrating but I kept calm which was unlike me in bumper to bumper traffics. Maybe Gangaji calmed me.

Once we hit the highway, it was smooth sailing via the main highway and we reached home before dinner. We ate tidbits and hit the sack promptly.

The days passed quickly and it was time to come back. I decided to use the same route back even after I had considered alternate routes bypassing NCR but decided against it due to the NE4 experience.

On returning day, I had planned to start by 11 AM but that stretched to 2.30 PM as the wife was packing slowly. Some elevated volumes from my side hastened the process and off we went. Some moist eyes of the kids and in-laws made the parting sorrowful. We crossed the city and hit the highway soon. Haridwar was crossed in quick time with very little traffic in afternoons. Roorkee bypass was also decent but traffic hit us hard post that. Very painfully slow movement upto Meerut bypass ensued. This time it took us more than an hour to cross Meerut bypass. Somehow we hit the Expressway quickly and after that it was quick movement. I decided to pass through Ghaziabad-New Delhi to avoid going an additional nearly 80Km of the Eastern peripheral Expressway. We took the Ghaziabad-Akshardham-Lajpat Nagar-AIIMS-Qutub route to reach Gurgaon. This decision cost me lots of time as traffic hit us hard post Lajpat Nagar. It took as 2 hours to reach Gurgaon from Lajpat nagar. Managed to keep sanity and reached my cousin's house at 9.30 PM. It took us 7 hours to cover around 280 Km, which included a 30 mins snacks break at a food court beyond Muzzafarnagar bypass.

We had good food and good adda session. Kids managed to stay up and chat with my Uncle and Aunt. Somehow kids manage to bond with their Grandparent's generation seamlessly. We woke up late thinking of starting at 11 AM. Well Man proposes but everyone else lazes. Kids, cousin, Uncle, Aunt, Wife everyone were engrossed in adda that we actually started at 1 PM. Sad faces and moist eyes ensued. However this part of journey was easier as most of the route was on NE4. We covered the distance till Sawai Madhopur in 3 hours including a short break near Dausa exit food court for late lunch. This food court was on the opposite side of the one we had stopped at on our onward journey. Beyond Sawai Madhopur, we drove in dark on those same roads. No geology sighting this time sadly. I had planned a photoshoot on Great Boundary Fault near Indergarh (for non-geologists in this forum, GBF is a big thing in Indian Geological past).
We reached Kota at around 9 PM. This time I had booked Hotel Lilac near rail station. Like the previous hotel, this one had decent sized rooms and good food but sleep quality was bit worse. Soups was okayish but salads are good. There is no dedicated parking space but enough security is in place.

We woke up late after being called up by the restaurant about breakfast. The breakfast spread is HUGE and very well planned. Food taste is decent but they pampered our kids with waffles on order. The chefs do try to make it a good experience.

We managed to hit the road at 11 AM. After passing through city roads and NH, we crossed the Dara pass and Mukundara Tiger reserves in daylight this time. Sadly there are no tigers but spotted lots of monkeys and cows. One cow managed to come to our window and make friends with my younger kid. Soon we hit the NE4 at Chechat. Good progress was made till Thandla exit. The road truly is remarkable. Again saw that all roadside amenities are non functional except one near Ratlam exit. Also none of these rest areas have working petrol pumps. After Thandla exit we covered the distance to Godhra in about 2 hours passing through a mix of villages and small towns. At Godhra we took a short chai break at one hotel on the highway which was very crowded and apparently frequented by the hip crowd of Godhra. Hotel Maroon is the place. Decent chai but rocking crowds. We crossed Kalol, Halol and other towns on the way to Vadodara in a hazy, smoggy atmosphere. Highly polluted ad dusty (although Gurgaon was worse). We reached Vadodara home at about 8.30 PM totally exhausted. Somehow managed to take a bath and dozed off. Apparently the wife and kids had some sort of dinner ordered off Swiggy (I have no recollection).

So that brought an end to a remarkable (for me!) trip. My wife and kids are planning more road trips now that the jinx is gone. Various places in Gujarat, Rajasthan and MP now beckon us.

Some more observations on the roads and the places. Petrol prices are very high in MP and Rajasthan. This is very sad given that neighboring states like Gujarat and Haryana are much much cheaper. Best prices in the trip were in Uttarakhand with Haryana close.
Roads are decent in Gujarat (in my 7 years here, overall road quality has gone down drastically. No more good roads here). They are good in MP and Uttarakhand. Rajasthan needs to up its game. Roads were good earlier but not anymore.
NE4 is a game changer. I can do a Vadodara-Dehradun run in 2 days once the NE4 and Delhi-Dehradun EW are completed. Road side amenities need to be opened ASAP. I can understand less food joints but these petrol pumps need to be opened quickly. Delhi Mumbai in 15 hours is possible on a good day.

Hopefully next year the entire stretch will be opened and we can do a similar trip. I am also dreaming of a Vadodara-Kolkata road trip in future. Need a little bit more confidence and planning. Soon perhaps!!!

P.s. The Pic is reluctant me posing on Janki Setu at Rshikesh. That is the only pic I clicked (or clicked of me) in the entire trip. Pic courtesy one of my Kids (likely the 6 year old but maybe the 12 year one)
