@IndianNomad, my suggestions below:
- 1. Vijaywada---the first route is better during peak hours. It is narrow at some spots and has potholes, but is faster.Traffic keeps moving on that stretch, though slowly. The second route is better only in late night hours.
- Rajamundry: the second route is certainly better. It is the NH5 and does not pass through towns, including RJY. But it is around 60 kms longer.
- Vizag: The first route that bypasses Vizag from Anakapallii is faster, though road is not that great. No recent updates on road condition, but certainly faster than going through Vizag., unless in off-peak hours.
Do update us after your trip.
@vanabhi
Thank you for suggestions. Will post an update after the trip.

On Bye passing Vijayawada, I wouldn't suggest you the first or the second route:). Please refer to post #
133 of this thread. I have posted a route map that takes you through ELURU road.

My colleague travelled couple of times to Rajamundry over the past two months. Per him, the first route is better than the Eluru route at the moment, because the road near the temple that leads to the Eluru road is in bad shape, and prone to severe traffic jams in peak hours.
I myself got stuck on that road for 45 minutes to traverse one km when I visited Vijaywada in December.
He says route 1 is of uneven width and has truck traffic, but at least you keep moving slowly and steadily.
Hey guys, we are planning a trip to Visakhapatnam next week in our Swift.
Just wanted to know if anyone has taken the Suryapet-Khammam-Aswaraopeta-Jangareedygudem-Rajahmundry route to avoid Vijayawada since the probability of getting stuck in there is a way too high due to the Durga temple and the ongoing capital founding Celebrations.
Please advise !

One more thing - the stretch between Vijaywada and Rajahmundry has quite a few small potholes strewn all over, for about 100 kms out of Vijaywada. They can be easily avoided by some watchful driving but they do sting if you hit them at those speeds. So just watch out. |
Agreed. Did a trip on 2nd Oct. This is a pretty bad stretch of 15-20km. Some good pockets might fool you, but they start again. Road repairs are on so might be a better road in a month or so. Took the Vijayawada by-pass route during return( 2pm). Newly laid road, did not find much traffic. Would suggest this road for anyone travelling during Dusera.
Tried 2 different bridges at Rajamundary . The Dowlaiswaram - Vijeswaram bridge was more fun but the connecting road goes through small town. It s a relaxing break-away from the wide highway roads.

I followed google. It took 20-30 mins to cross Vijayawada. I have stayed in this city for 4 years and can tell you by my experience that I was lucky. Hope its the same with you :). There is a tunnel (small) in the route. Not sure how many guys know that.
I have lived in the city for about 12 years. It's been more than two years since I visited the place. Good to hear that it takes just 30 mins max to cross the city. Is it at Gollapudi you join Hyderabad highway or at Bhavanipuram?
What is the current best route to take between Vizag?
1. Via Vijaywada? or
2. Via Khamman.
Thanks.

I would suggest you to take the route via Vijayawada which is four lane all the way upto Vizag.

Vijayawada is always preferred except for the bypass issues (check old posts here for that).
Khammam as such doesn't seem to be saving much on distance either.

Via Vijayawada without any doubt. Just time your crossing Vijayawada at non peak time like after 10pm and before 7am or between 12pm and 3pm.

Thank you gentlemen.
1. Is it completely 4 lane between Hyderabad and Vizag?
2. How good is the stretch for night driving? Say departing Vizag around 6pm.
Thanks again.

The entire stretch is 4/6 lanes. The Hyderabad - Vijaywada stretch is the best segment of the highway.

There are absolutely no problems driving at night if you are comfortable doing so.
