The first National Road racing championship is being held on the 15th and 16th of June 2007 in Coimbatore at KMS.

The resposibility of running the event has been handed over to MMSC and a few us from Chennai will be travelling to Coimbatore. I am planning on driving and would request suggestions for a suitable route.

Also look forward to meeting the guys in Coimby. Would be great of you can join us track side.

there are 3 routes that I can think of

1. madras-trichi-karur-coimbatore

2. madras-chengulpet-attur-salem-coimbatore

3. madras-vellore-krishnagiri-mettur-coimbatore

I would suggest the third option as roads are better. about 500 odd kms I guess. make sure you take the mettur road after thopur ghats.

we'll have a coimby meet at kms for sure.

I will need to go to the track before I get into the city. Can you please give me any specific instructions with regards to going to the track directly from the highway. Thanx.

Also what is approx drive time. I dont like stopping too much.

I would also suggest option 3 as you & your car would be able to turn up in much better shape.

Has anyone travelled on the salem-harur-Tirupattur-vaniyambadi-vellore -chennai route recently.How would you compare this with Krishnagiri-vellore -chennai and Attur-Villupuram-chennai.

Do not put yourself in trouble by choosing Salem-Harur-Utthangarai-Tirupattur-Vellore. On the other hand Attur-Villupuram-Tindivanam is also equally bad (4 laning is at full swing,means one sided traffic can lead heavy time killing on the road).

Better would be from Salem:

Salem-Omalur-Dharmapuri-Krishnagiri-Vellore-Chennai

From Coimbator

CBE-Mettupalayam-Sathy-Gobi-Andhiyur-Mettur-Mecheri-Thoppur-Dharmapuri-Krishnagir-Vellore-Chennai

CBE till Thoppur undivided road, but really good can cruise at some stretches.

Thoppur till Krishnagiri is bad and worst at some places.

Krishnagiri till Chennai breeze and very good.

There is no comparison. Krishnagiri - Chennai is Golden Quadrilateral 4-6 lane road with toll gates. 255 kms. Can be done in 3 hours.

Nope. And the road is also not good since 4 laning is going on between Coimbatore - Salem and Salem - Krishnagiri. Even if you need to

If you want pleasant driving then you should take

Coimbatore - Sathy - Athani - Andhiyur - Ammapettai - Mettur - Mechari - Thoppur - Dharmapuri - Krishnagiri - Vellore - Chennai.

Thoppur - Krishnagiri is being 4 laned, so expect bad roads and bad driving conditions. This stretch is approximately 50 kms. The rest is a breeze.

Sorry, this is too much. Why does one need to go to Mettupalayam and then on to Sathy. There is an excellent road from Coimbatore to Sathy direct. The route you have mentioned is too roundabout and is a waste of time and petrol/diesel

Also you don't have to go to Gobi from Sathy to get to Andiyur. Sathy - Athani - Andiyur would be just fine.

BTW, what is wrong with the road between Coimby and Bhavani? Isn't it better to reach Bhavani, then continue to Mettur, Thoppur, Krishnagiri?

The proper route would be like this

Coimbatore(Take avanashi road) - Avanashi - Perundurai - Bhavani - Mettur dam - Mecheri - Thoppur - Dharmapuri - and then to Krishnagiri on the GQ.

Mind you, the road between CBE till Perundurai was being worked upon and might just be a DOUBLE road. Expect good traffic

From the other side ie. from chennai also, it is better to take this route to avoid the junk of a road between Athur and Salem:Frustrati

Boss, I am not sure about the route between CBE-Sathy. All I have experienced is from Annur-Sathy road is not great and damaged.

If you take route from Mettupalayam-Sirumugai-Sathy it is just fine and some stretches are good.

Similarly, Sathy-Anthiyur via vaniputhur & Athani is very bad as road work is on for last 2 months.:Frustrati

Sathy-Gobi-Athani-Anthiyur is good and some stretches are excellent.:)

Folks, Just did Chennai-coimbatore-chennai .returned this morning.
Chennai-Krishnagiri-As usual Fantastic.
Krishnagiri- Dharmapuri- very bad.
D.puri-Thoppur- You cannot see a worst road than this now.It is an irony that the union minister for surface transport is from TN.
Thoppur-Mettur- Bad in stretches,potholed.
mettur-ammapettai-athani-Ok,potholed.
athani- sathy- ok.
stahy-cbe- good.
