Sadly the Kunigal road is not so easily accessible from the South and East side of Bangalore as from the Central and Northern side.

Exactly. For anyone taking NICE road to reach Bangalore Mysore NH, they can always continue on NICE till Tumkur Road exit and then drive till Nelamangala and merge with NH75.

However, this will easily add another 30 km at least if you take Kunigal Bellur Cross Srirangapattana route. If Magadi road was any good(it is not for now) one could directly hit Hassan Highway through a shorter route.

re: Bangalore - Mysore Expressway Thread

Did a day trip to MM Hills today and used the expressway till Maddur on both onward and return journey. Overall it was a pretty decent experience and good pace was maintained even with some traffic in the morning and high FE on the return journey owing to very sparse traffic.

Good to notice that the ban on slow moving vehicles is well practiced. I can count only two bikes I saw the entire day. Zero autorickshaw and goods autos. No rash driving and everyone were doing 80-100 with a very few cars going faster.

Only issue I could observe was the lack of lane discipline with trucks, hogging all lanes at 60kmph. Even buses somewhat kept to the center lane and I did all overtakes on the right lane itself and didn't have to sway between lanes compared to earlier.

Fortunately no wrong side driving, no accidents or major hazards seen today. I had to drive on the service lanes due to restaurant exits and they are also well made so it's a no brainer for slow moving vehicles to take this and remain on the safer side instead of wandering on the main carriageway. Below the maddur flyover too there is an excellent six lane carriageway and a four lane service road which can be used well for those who don't have to do a large portion of the Bangalore Mysore stretch. So I hope greater sense develops and people don't loiter on the main road.

Drove this expressway Mysore Bangalore on 19th morning started at 0530. It was raining till 0700. Very sparse traffic towards Bangalore but heavy traffic in opposite direction. Agree with all observations of Audioholic above. Very pleasurable experience overall.

Driving back tomorrow to Mysore. Hope to have similar experience.

I have a lot of respect for people who are able to maintain 80kmph from start to end without getting bored. I couldn't stay awake by trying to stick to 100 kmph. With hardly any vehicles like before, this highway is absolutely monotonous. Even worse was that there was no speed interceptors today which annoyed me since I could've maintained a comfortable pace without straining myself - it's incredibly difficult to maintain one's speed in a car without cruise control.

All said and done with such a restrained driving, still managed to complete the whole stretch in 1 hour 15 minutes.

I wonder if there's anyone else who faced a similar issue like me. Won't even be bothering to try out the Sammrudhi Mahamarg after this.

I guess the more expressways are built the more we are going to see instances of drivers dozing off. I used to face this in the US, especially the I5 which is like straight for 100s of miles and used set myself a limit of not driving continuously for more than 2 hours. Mostly need of the hour now is to have rest areas at regular intervals especially on the expressways.

What you experienced is a form of 'Highway Hypnosis" which is a known phenomenon. Either one ends up driving "autonomously" with no real recollection with all the instincts and learned behaviour of driving helping or on the other hand the person dozes off.

The only way to avoid this is to take stops frequently. However, on this highway, the wayside stops and rest points are still in the process of coming up given most of the good ones are on the older highway. Let's hope this happens sooner.

Here is a wiki link on the phenomenon

The highway is curving all the time and not straight. Surprising that it induces drowsiness. Maybe we need turns to keep us awake or road humps like before
I hope they come up with some solution on the Mysuru end joining the ring road.

Have driven 15 hours non stop in US many many times. You need to sing along and drink coffee to stay active.

New update in today's papers. NHAI seems to be closing the unofficial exit and entry points.

re: Bangalore - Mysore Expressway Thread

Drove on the highway today after couple of months. Looks like the 2 wheeler and related ban is being enforced strictly. Did not see any two wheelers or tractors/autos on the highway. Drove between 11.45 to 1pm. There are no longer any 120kmph boards. It is all 60/80/100. Highway was fairly empty and without cruise control was a struggle to keep the car between 90 and 100.

There was one interceptor close to the 2nd toll. Interesting modus operandi that I had not seenbefore. No one was being stopped at the interceptor point, only the interceptor was there. The rest of the cops were at the toll booth. Looked like the person at the interceptor passes the msg to the police at the toll and they conveniently catch the vehicle once it reaches the toll. Saw them checking numbers and stopping one vehicle.

I would really appreciate this move. Thank goodness that someone educated these police that it is not cool nor safe to flag down vehicles speeding down the expressway and cops dancing between lanes trying to do so. Safe for the cops, safe for the cars. Let them do the fine collection business at the toll which is the perfect place if they can figure out how to effectively stop cars considering the huge number of lanes

Agree wholeheartedly; that is the way it should be! Even on the KIAL Expressway, I believe they are doing this at the Sadahalli toll especially on weekends.

So finally some sense prevails. We have all read and seen the horrific accident where a traffic cop on duty was killed when he tried to flag down an allegedly speeding vehicle. I myself have witnessed a crash on BETL when cops flagged down a car that slammed its brakes as a result of which a tailing vehicle rear ended.

At one point our cops wants to be in the limelight to showcase leveraging AI and Information technology to address rising violations but even today they continue to jump in front of speeding vehicles.

It was time we moved away from this system permanently and simply start issuing e-challans. Other states are away ahead when it comes to this and those who travel across the sub-continent have always appreciated this system.
