I took the Hyderabad-Bhootpur-Mahabubnagar-Raichur-Sindhanur-Gangavati-Kamalapur (Hampi) for onward journey. I would agree with Jayded (13thNov post) regarding the road conditions.
Rough patches, many speed-breakers, narrow roads, many small towns with directionless traffic, etc. But it is quite drivable - just needs some caution.

........

Thanks for the post. Is great help.

Have some queries.

Are both these routes 4 laned?

How was the traffic?

Which towns/villages are difficult to cross?

Both routes were four-laned only on the Hyderabad - Bengaluru highway. After that it is a mixed bag - occasional stretches of 4 lanes. At many places the roads were under expansion (extra lanes) so I am guessing since my drive which was 1.5 years ago, things would have improved a lot.

Traffic was low on both routes - but I went during week days and that too just after a long weekend. Even at Hampi the tourists were quite few (you can tell from my pictures which can be seen from the link given).

No difficult to cross towns - all were easily crossable. Perhaps Raichur offered a semblance of resistance but definitely was not difficult.

If your drive is on weekend or holidays, you can expect slightly more traffic and more difficult to cross the towns, but not enough to discourage your plan.

Re: Hyderabad to Hampi : Route Queries

Hey All,

How are the road conditions from Bellary to Kurnool. My cousin is came from Kazipet to Hospet and travelled through the usual Mahaboobnagar -> Sindhanur -> Raichur road and the road conditions are horrible.

I am looking at alternate routes with good road conditions. One option is to travel through Hospet -> Bellary -> Aalur -> Kurnool. How are the route conditions from Bellary to Kurnool via Aalur?

Any other alternate routes? I looked at an alternate option from Hospet to Gooty via Guntakal. But I am not too sure about the route conditions through Guntakal.

Enquired with a friend from Hospet and this is the preferred road to Kurnool. It's about 30 Kms more when compared to the usual route through Raichur. Hoping this route through Bellary -> Moka -> Aalur -> Kurnool will have better road conditions. My cousin left this morning from Hospet. I will update about the route conditions.

This is the preferred route to Hyderabad from Bellary. The road is not that great, but a lot better than the other two options available.

Re: Hyderabad to Hampi : Route Queries

Hi all,

Need suggestions of route from Hyderabad to Hampi (would be staying mostly on north side of the river. Still looking for clean and safe place to stay).

Google is suggesting the route Hyderabad -> Mahaboobnagar -> Raichur -> Gangavathi -> Hampi 8.5 hrs. The route via Balleri is showing around 10 hrs.

What is the recommended route to be taken based on current conditions.

Take the route through Kurnool -> Alur -> Moka ->Bellary -> Hospet (Hampi). This is a better road when compared to the Raichur one. There is absolutely no road and lot of pot holes on the regular Mahaboobnagar -- Raichur stretch. While the other route through Kurnool -- Alur - Moka- Bellary stretch is not excellent, its manageable. In reality, it actually takes lesser time through this route.

Thanks for providing details. Actually in my case, I am staying in Hampi Boulders Resorts, which is north of the river. Bellary route is adding 65km extra (may be more if I have to go till Hospet). Is the longer route still recommended. Any idea about what part of Raichur road is bad/non-existent. Have heard that Raichur road is more scenic.

Is Gadwal - Raichur a better route than Mahabubnagar - Raichur?

Thanks a lot for replying.

Re: Hyderabad to Hampi : Route Queries

Came back from Hampi. Had taken Hyderabad -> Gadwal -> Raichur -> Manvi -> Gangavati -> North side of Hampi. And the same route while returning back.

Reasons for taking Gadwal route ->
1. Given that I was staying north of Hampi, taking Karnool -> Alur simply didn't make sense to me (driving extra 70km)
2. I had started from hyderabad in night time, and by the time I reached Jadcharla, it was still pitch dark so Gadwal made more sense as I spent more time on NH44 that way and I left NH44 almost around sunrise. Similar conditions for returning back, wanted to reach NH44 before people start using headlights.

Road condition:

NH44 -> Gadwal = Good Road (no speed breakers)
Gadwal -> Raichur = Ok road. ( multiple speed breakers. Not many patholes, 2 bad stretch of 40ft or something. Narrower side).
Raichur -> Manvi = Many shallow pathols. Need to be driven carefully for 5 km stretch from Raichur ORR towards Manvi. Later the road feels like the top of the layer has been taken off from many places. Was able to still hit 80+ many times. Speed breakers near villages. Few stretches had fresh termac laid out.
Manvi -> Later = Kind of bad road continues upto 5-10 km from Manvi. Later no patholes till Hampi.
Speed breakers are constant occurrences.

Was is a bad road. Yes. but I had really low expectations from reading this thread. And I have certainly seen horrible roads and these were not horrible. They are OK. Basically, go with low expectations and you will be in much happier position.

Re: Hyderabad to Hampi : Route Queries

Planning to take a road trip to Hampi.
Plan to take the Hyderabad->Kurnool->Alur->Moka->Ballari->Hampi route.

Planning to start early morning around 5:30 AM from Hyderabad and break for breakfast somewhere between Kurnool and Alur.

I am planning to have a mini picnic at the breakfast spot - means setup folding chairs and a small coffee table on the roadside between Kurnool and Alur to have breakfast and coffee and enjoy serene beauty and also take rest if possible.

Obviously this place should be scenic, with almost no population and road noise.
I would appreciate suggestion or recommendation of any spot on the road between Alur and Kurnool which is conducive for such a break.

This is my first trip this side and hence have no idea of this route..

Thanks in advance

I am planning to travel on 18th this month

Another option is Hyderabad - Boothpur - Mahbubnagar - Raichur - Sindanur-Gangavathi - Kamalapur-- Hampi.
On the way back you can try it

Re: Hyderabad to Hampi : Route Queries

I am planning to travel to Hampi from Hyderabad following the Hyderabad -> (NH44) -> Kurnool -> (NH27) -> Alur -> (NH132) -> Ballari -> Hampi

https://goo.gl/maps/PLuUqu8UMbPu5HNB6

Is this road safe to drive during daytime in terms of road condition?
My preference is to drive on the best paved route possible even if that takes an hour extra and is longer distance.

From this forum it seems that this is the most drivable route.

I wanted to confirm from other experienced travelers on this forum before I take the plunge.

Your help is very much appreciated

Re: Hyderabad to Hampi : Route Queries

Good choice of route. In December, we drove the Hyd > Mahboobnagar > Raichur > Sindhnur > Gangawati > Hampi route.

Road to Mahboobnagar is great (Bangalore highway). Mahboobnagar to Makthal town is good too, albeit some potholes etc.

Makthal to the border and till Raichur is a nightmare. The power plant are is smoky and smells bad, the road at the border (+/- 5 kms either way) is broken and under construction, and the actual RTA checkpost is just backed up with trucks all the time. From Raichur till Sindhanur is okay. Road surfacing is bad in Karnataka all the way with alternating good and rough patches - meaning sustained speed (80-100 kmph) is not really possible.

Do share your trip details and photos - we are planning another visit and I'd love to know.

Re: Hyderabad to Hampi : Route Queries

My wife and I did Hyderabad - Hyatt Vijayanagar on 9th Feb and Vijayanagar - Hampi the following day.

Route taken - Mahabubnagar -> Kurnool -> Kodumur -> Alur -> Bellary -> Vijaynagar.

The NH till Kurnool, is obviously flawless and superb quality. After that the rest of the route is okay - pretty manageable. There were some bad patches here and there spanning for a few kilometers. Since, we were staying at Hyatt, Vijaynagar this was the route we chose.

Vijayanagar - Hampi route is pretty good. There were some reviews which I read that the road is very bad and painful to drive on. However, we didn't encounter any bad stretches, the route was good and the latter part towards Hampi is beautiful too. It was a 50 minute drive from Hyatt to Hampi center.

This was our first time visiting Vijayanagar, and we were pleasantly surprised by the small industrial town, it is built very eloquently, although the entire city seems like it has been painted brown - the roads, dividers, road signs and even the trees.
