Thanks a lot Narayan. Its was great find indeed especially for folks heading to South Chennai.
I drove via that interior road couple of weeks back. It's perfectly fine and there were no issues

In fact this would be quicker as well instead of going all the way towards Walajabad.

This is a good option for people based out of South Chennai. I used to take Manimangalam option in the past but joining Sriperumbadur was always a pain and this is a much better option for people based out of South Chennai.

Re: Bangalore - Chennai - Bangalore : Route Queries

Oops... now I'm totally spoilt for choice. I used to be that dumb guy who went through Sriperumbudur, poonamallee, porur, guindy, adyar, inorder to reach Tiruvanmiyur.

Now, the number of options popping in this thread has left my pea-sized brain in total dilemma. Which one will be a good one for me ? ONLY PRIORITY IS GOOD SURFACE, lesser traffic would be a welcome bonus.

Until the last few posts or so, I had kind of narrowed down to two choices, which I wanted to try the next time :

1) Sriperumbudur U-turn -> Chennai Institute of Technology -> Kundrathur theradi -> anakaputhur bridge -> pallavaram gate -> (turn left) -> guindy -> adyar -> tiruvanmiyur

2) Sriperumbudur U-turn -> Chennai Institute of Technology -> Kundrathur theradi -> anakaputhur bridge -> pallavaram gate -> (turn left, seek the next available U turn and turnaround) -> pallavaram bridge (elevated) -> take left -> keelkattalai -> Dr.Kamakshi hospital -> thoraippakkam -> take left onto OMR -> Tiruvanmiyur.

Now I'm royally confused. Kindly help guys, because with so many of these new options posted recently, should I choose one of them instead of any of 1 or 2 above ?

Just stick to your original option

One thing is clear:
- Use the Orgadam-Vandalur road
- Pallavaram exit to radial ring road.

Question is how you want to get to the Oragadam-Vandalur road. Either Sriperumpudur-Oragadam or exit at Sunguvarchatram. Thats up to you.

Till Metro work is complete. I wouldn't touch Kattupakkam-Mount with a barge pole.

For the moment your choices are:

1. Sunguvarchatram-2 routes-Oragadam-Vandalur-Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam-Tidel-Tiruvanmiyur
2. Sriperumbudur toll-Thirumazhisai-Outer Ring Road-Kishkinda Road-small section of Mudichur Road-enter GST at Valluvar Gurukulam School-Pallavvaram-Thoraipakkam-Tidel-Tiruvanmiyur
3. Sriperumbudur bypass-Kundrathur ROad-Outer Ring Road-Kishkinda Road and rest from route 2.

This avoids Kattupakkam-Mount entirely.
Between Vandalur to Pallavaram, the only small section that is so-so is around Perungalathur. It is virtually traffic free if you enter the section around 1030-1130 am.
The Kishkinda Road section from Outer Ring Road to Mudichur Road is good. Don't exit Outer Ring Road to Mudichur Road.
Mudichur-Tambaram the annoyance is speed breakers.

At Pallikaranai flyover, you can also choose to go via Vijayanagar junction-SRP to avoid traffic OMR. At the expense of small manageable section around Vijayanagar junction.

All these are courtesy of my commute plus some joy rides over the last 2 months.

Don't even bother trying Outer Ring Road-Tirumudivakkam-Tiruneermalai-Selaiyur-Pallavaram

Re: Bangalore - Chennai - Bangalore : Route Queries

Thank you @ampere @Narayans80,

both of you didn't even hint at the options 1 & 2 in my post - which means they are not optimal.

However, one thing has become clear to me - GST road and then eastwards (road marked SH109 in gmaps) from pallavaram via pallikkaranai into Tidel is the 'fixed' part of the options.

Which in turn means, getting to GST is the variable. Which can be done in two ways : (a) oragadam route or (b) via Outer ring road.
Option (b) will entail weathering the traffic storm through sripedumbudur, all the way until the tirumazhisai interchange onto Outer ring road.
Option (a) looks best, and within the various sub-options to reach oragadam junction, ampere's route of exiting NH48 at sunguvachatram and then SH120 to T-bone into the 4-lane state highway to vandalur, and jumping over oragadam junction via the flyover, and joining GST at vandalur ----> seems to be the best option.

Thank you guys, this link from ampere is what I am going to follow :

Thats not my route! That was Narayan who suggested it. I just took it. But yes it helps a lot, inspite of putting additional distance.

Since your priority is good surface, regardless of distance, and your destination is Thiruvanmiyur which is in east more than south, i suggest you can do in below order

1) Shorter distance with good surface => Option 1 you mentioned but with more traffic till Sriperumbudur and slow moving traffic between Kundrathur to Pallavaram.
2) Longer distance with good surface but with more traffic though moving fast => Sunguvarchatram-Oragadam-Vandalur-Tambaram-Chrompet-Pallavaram-Guindy-Adayar-Thiruvanmiyur.

Just keep it simple.

Re: Bangalore - Chennai - Bangalore : Route Queries

Folks,
I need to reach Pattabiram. Starting from C V Raman Nagar, Bangalore.
Usually I would do Kolar-Chittoor-Arcot-Nazarethpettai-Outer Ring Road-Pattabiram.

But, the catch this time is, I might have to drive past dusk and reach Chennai around midnight. Is the above route worth it? (Few recent posts talk of Chennasamudram - Sriperumbudur stretch being hazardous for night travel)

Is there any alternative at all? I'm ok with slower/undivided roads as long as its safe & not dangerous.

Edit: Last time, I travelled on this stretch in night time was in December-2021. Any changes since then?

If you are driving Chennasamudram-Sriperumbudur around midnight-1am it is generally more peaceful to drive. You won't have the annoying shift buses. If you are not an aggressive driver, you should be fine.

Alternatives would have learning curve, which I would avoid in this sort of a drive.

Yes, there are many changes since Dec 2021. You can refer to my previous posts of my frequent trips.
The risk is that there are deep pits in both sides particularly near the center median area. There are many places where opposite direction is also on same level without any gap/divider. They have kept plastic cones in few places and barrels in few places. This is on top of no lane marking and numerous deviations.

I don't see major alternative shorter route for you, but it seems if you are unable to avoid night drive, be extremely careful and cautious, though it is the last leg of the travel.

As narayan mentioned, traffic will be less, but attention and concentration level required is more to be watchful.

Thnaks to fellow menbers for the suggestions for my trip from Bangalore to Kelambakkam. Going thru them, I have realized that there are three options from Sunguvarchatnam to Oragadam. The rest of the route from Oragadam to Kelambakkam and Bangalore to S'chatnam is pretty much straight forward.

1. S'chatnam > Sriperumbudur Rt turn before bypass > Oragadam (Longer time on NH 48 BLR MAA road with it's traffic, diversions and ? bottleneck at S'perumbudur) 21 km/27 min

2. S'chatnam > SH 120 > Kattavakkam > SH 48 Oraadam (longer route but 4 L throughout)29 km/35 min.

3. S'chatnam > Rt turn > take smaller roads zig zag thru to Vallakkottai > Oragadam (Shortest route but thru smaller roads and suitability depends on the condition of these roads) 15 kms/ 23 mins

Gmaps distance and timings are done at similar times early in the morning so may not be representative of the time that I will be passing through around 11 AM.

Which should be my choice considering this is my first time in this area, only me and wife in an i20.

Initial half km from NH4 is busy with all 3 routes. Apart from this, there shouldn't be any time specific swings between routes. Traffic at other points are beyond Oragadam.

Even route 1 might be free at 11 am. I once picked up a relative from Sriperumbudur toll around noon on a Sunday, there was hardly any traffic. Even 4 pm is busy, early nights are busy (even around 11 pm).

Route 1 and 3 are fairly straightforward in terms of turns. Only Ravi can comment on route 2.

I took option 3 on Sunday to Chennai based on Gmap's suggestions . It was really smooth drive. I didnt have to encounter the grid lock at Sriperumpudur and the crazy traffic on Mudichur road.

However, I am not sure how the traffic will be in the industrial belt on a weekday.

Re: Bangalore - Chennai - Bangalore : Route Queries

I am planning Chennai Bengaluru Chennai drive on Friday and Saturday. While going to Bengaluru, I have work in Hosur so the it will be usual route via Vellore, Krishnagiri.

While coming back, I will be leaving from Yelahanka. Should I take the Kolar Chitoor route or use the Hosur route.

Between home (Nanganallur) and Sriperumbudur/ Sunguvarchatram I will try one of teh routes discussed earlier
