Bangalore - Kannur : Route Queries

All,

Any one has update on Makkutta Road..? It supposed to be open by 1st June'10. Is it again got pushed to later date...?

Yesterday, I was talking to one of the tourist bus operator, he was saying, it may open only by 15th June'10..

I took the makkuta road yesterday morning. Its almost completed except the final layer in few places. I paid Rs 100 on all closed gates to get the access

they informed, it will be opened by 5th. (Any body's guess). Work wise its more or less completed. Roads till hunsur are not that great. Started at 5 AM from tellicherry and reached banaglore by 10 AM.

The distance from Kormanagala to Tellicherry via NICE road is 311 KM

There are news in todays News Papers that, the Makutta road will be opened to public transport on 5th June'10 at 10:45am.

So finally we have this road opened. -> The Hindu : Karnataka / Madikeri News : Konanur-Makutta-Kerala road inaugurated

This is great relief for the those travelling to the north side of Kerala from Bangalore. The Kerala RTC already reduced the bus fare which was increased when they were plying through Mananthawadi. Hope the Private Bus operators also does the same.

One of the Local news paper report says that with this Makutta route open, the driving time from kannur to Bangalore is reduced to 6 or 7 hours?
Not sure whether this is meant for buses or cars?

Earlier years, when the road was good, the private tourist buses from Kannur used to reach Bangalore as early as 4:15am in the morning leaving Kannur at around 9:30-10pm

Private bus operators say that they did not increase the fares when they started using the Mananthavadi route; its only due to the diesel prices they increased. So, no chances of reducing the fare!

What is the best route now?

Blr-Mysore-Goni koppa-Virajpet-Kuttupuzha-Iritty-Mattanur-Kannur right?

Heard that the barricades are not yet in place, and since the roads are new and really good, there are lot of accidents. Cars flying off turns.

A friend had driven down, and he had witnessed 3 accidents, in each case, the driver lost control at a turning. Traffic is light, so you can travel Blore to kannur is approx 6hrs.

But do drive at sane speeds, with the rains, you wont know whats in store for you at the next bend.

Iam driving to Kannur on 24th of July. I was searching the routes on "MapmyIndia" for the below mentioned routes with no luck at all..
Could someone elaborate on the route from Bangalore-Kannur via Makutta Road cos its not shown on these maps anywhere :-|

The route :
Bangalore~Srirangapattana~Yelawala~Hunsur~Tithimat ti~Gonikoppa~Perumpady~Maakuta~Kootupuzha~Iritty~M attanur~Chalode~Kannur

This is 310 Kms from bangalore.

Can be covered in 4.5~5 Hrs

Widening and Straightening work of the stretch between Irritty~Kootupuzha and Tithimatti~Hunsur has started.

This is done as part of the Mysore~Telecherry Highway development program.

The acquisition of land for the same is almost complete.
