You can try the NH48 route.

- Bangalore-Nelamangala-Kunigal-Channarayaptna-Holenarasipur-Arkalgud-Somwarpet-Madikeri.

Not if they haven't re-laid the arakalgud road. Please look at my post a few pages back in the thread when I last travelled July. My advice would be to check with the place where you are staying for latest road updates on this route, or anyone from the community who have taken it recently can comment.
Any reason why you don't want to take the Mysore way? You could skip Mysore and take the Yelawala to join Hunsur road directly.

As per many people's post I thought its bad, but doable and hence many now recommend that route. So I suggested the same. Did not know its that bad.

This route is perfectly fine except for a 2 KM gravel road just before Holenarasipura. This is my regular route to reach Sullia nowadays. This is the best and most peaceful way to reach Madikeri from Bangalore. Highly recommended. Fresh tarmac between Arakalgud - Shanivarasante - Somawarapet.

Re: Information on Coorg route

I plan to drive to Madikeri around mid April.
Start from HSR Layout around 6 AM. I need to pick up some one from Bidadi, so SH17 is the better option.

What is the best route? Google maps shows Bglr - Hunsur -Periyapatna -Kushalnagar - Suntikoppa - Madikkeri. Is this route good after Periyapatna?
I remember that early 2013, the Srirangapatnam to Hunsur bypass road was in a bad condition; what is the status now?

- That is the only route!
- If you take the Mysore ORR please be careful. At one point the road just ends into a dead end you need to take a diversion
- If you don't slow down early, it can be quite nasty.
- Also quite a place for getting rear-ended as well.

Re: Information on Coorg route

Planning a trip to Coorg starting from Brigade gateway, Malleswaram by picking up a Zoom self drives on 18th April weekend.

Can anyone who has taken the route recently suggest which would be a better route:
Option 1 : Yeswantput - Neelamangala - Kunigal - Channarayapatna - Holenarsipura - Arkalgud - Kushalnagar - Madikeri

Option 2: Bangalore - Mysore - Hunsur - Madikeri

Re: Information on Coorg route

Recently I have done the second one. The route is good. One catch is the road is in construction at Mysore so had to ask locals for help. Otherwise it is a decent road.

Thanks,

Since you start from Malleshwaram, I would suggest take Option 1. Easy to get to Nelamangala and on to 4-lane.

Where is the construction?

The route is : Mysore (Columbia Asia Junction) - Ring Road - Hunsur Road.

Just that at few places you can see construction on ring road. Apart from that its good road.

Re: Information on Coorg route

Looking at g-map, option 1 does look shorter especially starting from Malleshwaram as suggested but some concerns have been raised in the forum regarding the road after Channarayapatna i.e after NH 48.

Any info on that part of the road after Channarayapatna to Madikeri via Arkalgud would be the very useful.

Where you tend to gain is bypassing Mysore and Hunsur roads which have quite traffic. And in return you the "real" 4-lane, with town bypassed. You can Channarayapatna-Holenarasipura quite fast.

I think a few km beyond Arkalgud is rough. But otherwise very good roads and most of all absolutely no traffic.

Please note NH48 is worth taking if you are heading to Madikeri. If south Coorg like Siddapur/Virajpet/Amathi etc, then Mysore-Hunsur is a better option.

This rough patch has been relaid recently . Few small potholes are present for around 500 meters after taking left at Arakalgud towards Shanivarasante and the rest of the road is very smooth.

Re: Information on Coorg route

I drove to Coorg in mid-March. I live in BSK 3rd Stage (close to the PESIT NECE Road entry point).

I took this route:

BSK 3rd Stage - NECE Road - Mysore Road - Mysore Ring Road (turn right at Columbia Asia signal, just after the overhead railway bridge before Mysore City) - Hunsur Road - Coorg

All good roads, except some lane diversions on Mysore Ring Road due to construction. Left at 7:30 AM, reached destination home stay for lunch @ 12:30PM, including a couple of rest stops along the way. Total driving time about 4.5 hours at a relaxed pace.

If you take this route, plan to cross Maddur & Mandya on Mysore Road before mid-morning and you should avoid traffic hassles.

Re: Information on Coorg route

So, road conditions both ways seems fine. But, I have few queries:

1. I m travelling with family including a year old kid, so might need some stops in between. Hope both the options of highways have enough eateries/restaurants?? Mysore route may have more options in this

2. If I take the Nece ring road from Yeswantpur to join Mysore highway, will that save a lot of traffic time inside bangalore and also whether this ring road is working condition?
