Road trip to Horanadu and Sringeri

I am planning a road trip leaving tomorrow to Horanadu and should reach Sringeri the day after.

Requesting advice on the route from Balehonnur to Horanadu -
is it better to take the road
from Jayapura to Horanadu? or
through magundi>balehole>kalasa>horanadu?

Also, pl can anybody let me know the present road conditions.

I am planning to go to Sringeri via Kudremukha Township - is that a good choice? I did this route about 4 years ago and the roads seemed fine.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Amp

I did go through the posts for the whole of Aug11. Could not find info for the questions I had.

I am concerned about the route currently considering the rainy season. Hence the post today.

I would recommend you to take Bangalore - Mudigere (via gendehalli) - Kalasa - Horanadu - Sringeri via Kudremukh. Amazing drive and good roads. You. Can look at my. TL titled "Mesmerised in Malnad in monsoon"

Fauji's recommendation is the best route, had been there a month ago and I second the route.

Re: Road trip to Horanadu and Sringeri

I had been near to Sringeri & Agumbe last weekend.
I had taken BLR-Hassan-Belur-Mudigere-Aldur-Balehonnur-Jayapura.

Except a stretch from Aldur - Balehonnur (around 5+ kms) rest of The road is good all the way till Sringeri.

Re: Road trip to Horanadu and Sringeri

Returned from a Sringeri-Hornadu trip last night.

Bangalore - Sringeri -
Chikmagalur - Aldur - Balehonnur - Jayapura - Sringeri

Sringeri-Hornadu -
Sringeri - Balehonnur - Magundi - Balehole - Haluvalli - Hornadu

Hornadu-Bangalore -
Hornadu - Kalasa - Kottigehara - Mudigere - Gendehalli - Belur - Hassan - Bangalore

Bad patches -
Between Chikmagalur and Balehonnur, the surface has deteriorated considerably. The drive is not the usual pleasant experience like before the monsoons.

Magundi - Hornadu
Plenty of potholes along with decent patches

Hornadu - Kalasa
Tattered. Very slow progress.

Kalasa - Kottigehara
Very bad stretch with relief now and then in the form of excellent tarmac for short distances. Overall, this stretch is bad. However, the views you get of the Western Ghats are breathtaking, and unlike any I have seen from other roads.

Kottigehara - Mudigere
Decent

Mudigere - Gendehalli - Belur
Narrow roads with occasional bad patches. On the whole, they're in reasonable shape. Just acceptable.

The bottomline is that not many will enjoy driving these routes with the kind of variation in surface quality catching you unawares now and then. But this should be no big deal for jeeps or SUVs.

Is that the only option to Horandu from Bangalore ?
No other routes?

There are several alternatives, though none of them are attractive. I'll describe them from Hassan onwards.

1. Most direct: Hassan-Belur-Gonebidu (instead of through Gendehalli that I'd taken yesterday)-Mudigere-Kottigehara-Kalasa-Hornadu
Belur-Mudigere via Gonebidu, I heard, is worse than the road through Gendehalli.

2. The best of the lot: Hassan-Belur-Chikmagaluru-Aldur-Balehonnur-Magundi-Balehole-Haluvalli-Hornadu
This route is the most tolerable of the options. It's a thorough mix of very good and moderately bad roads. But it definitely is significantly circuitous.

3. Hassan-Belur-Gendehalli-Aldur-Balehonnur-Hornadu
This is slightly shorter than the previous; I don't know the condition from Gendehalli-Aldur.

4. The longest: Hassan-Belur-Chikmagaluru-Aldur-Balehonnur-Jayapura-Basarikatte-Hornadu
However, there is absolutely no point doing so many extra kilometres as the roads from Jayapura to Hornadu through Basarikatte are also in very bad shape.

I am not exactly aware of how many extra kilometres each route would take you, but you would get a fair idea when you look at the routes on wikimapia.

There could be many more alternatives in the form of interior roads (such as Aldur-Basaravalli-Manabure-Magundi-Haluvalli-Hornadu), but they are almost certain to be as tattered as any. You may not mind these alternatives if you drive a Thar, perhaps Also, you wouldn't want to take them unless you are absolutely familiar with the area.

I have found myself trying to find a way out of the winding roads of the Western Ghats in fading sunlight a couple of times, and with few people to ask on the way, it's easy to feel overwhelmed.

Can you go to Horanadu without touching Khalasa? Can you elaborate on the route?

Exactly my doubt. I was of opinion, one cannot go to Horanadu, without
touch Kalasa.

One way is through Balehonnur.

From Balehonnur, drive towards Magundi where you reach a fork. Take the right at Magundi (the road towards the left goes onward to Kottigehara), and the road will take you to Balehole and further to Haluvalli. At Haluvalli, be careful to spot a rather narrow road to your right, at the corner of which there is an insignificant sign board that reads 'Way to Hornadu'. This road is narrow and twisting, but goes through extremely beautiful terrain with forest, plantations and water cascades. The road condition is mixed, but definitely reasonable.

If you miss that right at Haluvalli and continue along the straight, you would reach Kalasa in a few kilometres.

The other way is via Jayapura –

Proceed towards Sringeri from Jayapura, and take a left towards Basarikatte a few kilometers from Jayapura. This takes you through torn interior roads (I have not taken that route recently, but I hear it is bad) passing through Basarikatte, to Hornadu.

I'm not sure I'm being very clear with the route. Please let me know if I'm not.

Re: Road trip to Horanadu and Sringeri

Kalasa is due south of Hornadu.

The approach to Hornadu from Balehonnur-Haluvalli is from the east while the approach from Jayapura-Basarikatte is from the north.

I would say the best route to Horanadu would be this. Hassan-Belur-Gendehalli-Mudigere-Kottigehara-Kalasa-Horanadu

Technically, any road you take to Horanadu, you will just be bypassing Kalasa. This is because all the roads leading to Horanadu are offshoots of the roads going to Kalasa.
