NHAI plans new road in Thoppur ghat section to curb accident rate

Dharmapuri: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has sent a proposal to the Central government seeking Rs 114 crore to lay a new road at Thoppur ghat section on Salem-Bangalore national highway. The project is expected to check accidents in the busy stretch.

NHAI to deploy all women toll staff on Women’s Day

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to deploy all women toll collecting staff in day shift on at least one toll plaza close to the city area in every state and UT on March 8, International Women’s Day.

“If this initiative is successful, then it will be implemented across all toll plazas under operation by NHAI within the next 3 months. The Regional Officers have been instructed in this regard,” Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in a statement.

To improve the condition of toll plazas and create a competitive environment, the NHAI is also doing a ranking of toll plazas based on various parameters directly affecting the highway users such as ETC (electronic toll collection) adoptability, condition of ETC infrastructure and time taken in passing through the toll plaza using FASTag lane, it said.

The parameters also included deployment of Road Marshals, setting up point of sale of FASTag, FASTag Notice Board, behaviour of toll plaza staff, availability of toll plazas Manager, informative Sign Boards, general cleanliness, condition of flooring and feedback from highway users, availability of neat and clean ladies/gents/divyang toilets, greenery and maintenance on NH stretch etc, it said.

Soon, you may have to pay highway toll based on distance actually travelled.

Each time a vehicle pays toll on a national highway, its movement may now be mapped for the distance it travels on that road. This will be done to charge toll in proportion to the road used by that vehicle.

A pilot run for such ‘geo-fencing’ on the Delhi-Mumbai highway is expected to begin in the next couple of weeks after the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) the proposal of the charging toll based on the distance travelled.

Geo-fencing uses global positioning system or radio frequency identification (RFID) technologies to create a virtual geographic boundary, which would enable the software to trigger a response when a mobile device enters or leaves a particular area.

“The pilot run on the Delhi-Mumbai highway will begin in the next two to three weeks for the geo-fencing to gauge the entry and exit of vehicles,” an official said.

A toll plaza might be placed at all entry and exit points to ensure the commuter pays only for the distance travelled.

Kazhakoottam-Paripally highway widening work to begin this week

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The preliminary work on the widening of NH 66 stretch from Kazhakoottam to Paripally is set to begin this week. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials have handed over the land to the contractor, RDS Limited. The demolition of buildings and felling of trees to acquire land needed for the widening are progressing at various places. However, the NHAI is yet to handover compensation to a few landowners.

Kundannoor-Angamaly NH Bypass needs 280 hectares from 17 villages

Close on the heels of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) approving the alignment for the 47-km partially-access-controlled Kundannoor-Angamaly greenfield NH (Ernakulam Bypass) a month ago, it is estimated that 280 hectares of land is needed for the project.

The greenfield corridor that would begin south of the NH 66 Bypass at Kundannoor and end at Karayamparambu on the northern side of Angamaly on NH 544 has been mooted to decongest the Aroor-Edappally NH 66 Bypass and the Edappally-Angamaly NH 544 stretch, passing through 17 villages.
