One thing that baffles me here is that diesel tank explosion and fire engulfing the entire bus within few minutes. My idea was diesel is NOT a flammable fuel.

I too felt the same earlier. But then, remember Diesel may not be 'easily' flammable fuel under 'normal' circumstances. In an engine, it is compressed to extreme pressures hence enabling self-ignition. So my take on this accident is the speed of the bus (120+ ??) and the subsequent impact is what which 'ignited' the fuel.

Volvo says the fuel tanks are not made of metal, but plastic to ensure that they crack before they compress on impact, which will result in the fuel spilling upon the impact.

A view which is going round is the bus was carrying some inflammable material in its loading area and that this caught fire which engulfed the bus very quickly, and as a witness lamented, 'everything was over within 20 minutes'. However, there is no official version on this as yet.

Very interesting thought. I have heard from many sources that these luxury buses illegally carry things like alcohol, fuel, even crackers in large quantities which cause the vehicle to burn without trace in such cases. And these buses are usually never stopped at any check points as well. Not sure if this its true though.

Scared of traveling in such buses now.

The news says, there was a leak in the fuel tank. That the news says is the most probable cause for fire.

The TOI article also surmises that it could have been some electrical fitting done by a local chap or rodent damage.

Most probable cause of the accident, it is speculated, is the presence of sizeable cache of liquor ( liquor prices in Karnataka are a lot lesser than those in AP), Diwali crackers being brought by the travellers and a lot of human hair (probably sourced from a temple and smuggled to escape taxes etc).

This is speculation, though. The AP government had ordered the CID to investigate the matter.

The rubber in the fuel pipe that is easily exposed to rodents does not come factory encased with a iron mesh by default. At least that is what the SM at Trident Hyundai told me.

So asking all to please get that mesh put if not already done.

A parked car catching fire after being parked for more than a couple of days doesn't seem to add up. Have you ruled out sabotage? Any CCTV cameras around?

BTW was it a petrol or diesel Superb?
