Sure, half of Europe is full of these average speed check cameras. I don’t understand why they would be AI? It’s about as straightforward as can be.

Please post this on twitter and tag Alok Kumar who is the DGP for road safety across Karnataka. He will definitely teach these people some valuable lessons.

Just a cool term used to make things sound very cutting edge or modern There is no AI in these cameras, just automated detection of various offences including lane discipline and speeding. Everywhere in the news its termed as AI cameras whereas technically these are just automated cameras.

Thats just the latest buzz word. Any gadget these days has to have an "AI aspect" to it, else its uncool to use it!

You should report this, at least tweet it to the bangalore / mysore traffic police handles and tag a few higher officials. No one can be sure what action will be taken, but if someone does something about it, it may benefit others in the future.

When ever you read AI in the Indian context read it with a double quotes. The AI prefix is there because it sells. Sort of like the word "natural" and "herbal" in the context of shampoo and soap advertisements.

Re: Bad Drivers - How do you spot 'em

The road behind the Cyber Towers at Madhapur (Hyderabad).

It used to be bikes, then the autos and now even cars who want to drive on the wrong side to save maybe 2-3 mins of time.

Another thrill-seeking biker has tragically lost his life in the pursuit of social media fame. Some reports say he lost control of the bike on wet tarmac, while others say he collided with a scooter.

I liked how you were defensive. The Harrier (?) and the taxi were so close to danger. What I loved was them being caught up by the speed breaker!

They automatically detect other offences such as driver and co driver not wearing seatbelts, driver using mobile phone, lane indiscipline, etc. They’ve used an AI software that has automated the identification of such offences.

A sample:

With shock, I slammed on the brakes and moved to the left lane to increase the braking distance, coming to a stop very close to the auto. I felt a huge sigh of relief as my family was with me in the car.

Normally, I consider myself very patient, but this incident left me furious. The auto then moved back to the right lane, causing a significant traffic buildup. As I overtook them, I was shocked to see six men inside the auto—three in the front and three in the back—looking very much like goons. After overtaking, I was watching them in my rearview mirror and saw them repeatedly changing lanes and creating chaos on the road. Fortunately, the other vehicles were not travelling at high speeds.
Nice reflexes and response, also I admire almost wonder at the lack of expletives in the video while braking to avoid the auto

Re: Bad Drivers - How do you spot 'em

The "AI" part is related image recognition, where almost real time identification of number plates and also offences like not wearing seat belt, lane cutting, talking on phone can be done.

Re: Bad Drivers - How do you spot 'em

This Tata Zest cab driver was either drunk or unwell or a rogue! He was constantly talking over the phone and driving in this risky manner. It looked like he was aiming the cars from the oncoming traffic and going towards them.
The Zest was also damaged from the rear and front. I was keeping a safe distance from this car.
I overtook him when he came to a complete halt.

When the Hyundai Verna overtook me, I went parallel to him and cautioned him about the Zest driver, so he also kept a safe distance from this car.

Am happy that this post missed a place in the thread 'Accidents in India | Pics & Videos'.

Dashcam footage of the Tata Zest-

Appears to be either drowsy or drunk driving. If he was also on the phone, that would have made matters worae. So many close calls, but I'm so glad he finally managed to pull up & stop.

Re: Bad Drivers - How do you spot 'em

I would like to share an old incident which I can never forget. It happened in late 2020, sharing it now as I discovered this thread only now.

I was driving through Tilak Nagar, Bengaluru in my Nano, I was driving normally and I was in no hurry. Two goons in a Honda Dio pull up from nowhere and ask me to stop making it look like a hit-and-run situation. Since I knew I had done nothing wrong and there was no way I could outrun them, I stopped. The 2 claimed that I brushed past their Dio, and damaged their silencer which hurt the pillion's leg. I knew it was a lie as the pillion rider was neither hurt nor did my car have any scratches. They started demanding 3k and when we were having this conversation, an auto guy (who also belongs to the same gang) pulled up and pretended to help me. After listening to the conversation, he suggested that I pay 3k and settle it there. I quickly realised that it was a trap and there was no way I could get any sort of help from anyone as I was driving a car and the person playing the victim card was on a 2-wheeler. After a long conversation, I started running out of time and finally agreed to pay them 3k. Since I did not have cash, I told them I would pay through UPI (to which they did not agree for obvious reasons). The auto guy said, "There is an ATM nearby, come I will show you". He snatched my phone and asked me to follow his auto. He took me to an ATM a couple of kilometres away, where I drew cash and handed it over to the 2.

I immediately realised the importance of a dashcam and installed one. However, on that day, I lost 3000rs and a couple of hours, but the worst part was it was my birthday and I was on my way to meet my friends.

Moral of the story: Always have a good dashcam (front and back). Avoid taking your car to crowded areas which are filled with such goons, take a different route if possible even if it is a couple of kilometres longer. If it is inevitable, ensure you maintain a safe distance from such people no matter what hurry you are in.

The first experience is always a bit nerve-wracking.

Next time such things happen, you can say "Yes, come, lets go to the ATM" and drive straight to the closest Police Station.
TilakNagar Police station is bang opposite to the Mall.

Re: Bad Drivers - How do you spot 'em

Similar experience recently. I braked hard when a guy happened to cross the street from left to right, but I could not spot him in time as there was an LCV on my front left quarter blocking my view.

A scooter behind me claimed to have rammed my car and argued that it was my fault because I had braked suddenly. I tried to explain the circumstances to the two scooter guys about why I was forced to brake, but they wouldn't listen & demanded I pay them for scooter damage (a light was broken & the guard rail was bent).

I did not relent & insisted we call traffic police. One of them pretended to call the cops but I saw through their trick of stalling & trying to delay me. I called 112 myself & asked for a Hoysala to come to us - gave them location, explaining the situation & the threat the two guys were posing.

The two scooter guys began pleading that I pay them Rs.1000/- at least. I didn't budge - told them that the Hoysala was on its way. The guys murmured some abuses, started & got on their scooter & drove away. I then called 112 & cancelled the Hoysala, but it arrived almost as soon as I had canceled it! I thanked the Hoysala & went on my way.
