Volkswagen working on new 'Active Hood' technology as part of its pedestrian safety features According to reports, Volkswagen is working on a new technology as part of its pedestrian protection system. The new feature is called 'Active Hood' technology and works in conjunction with other pedestrian safety functions.
The Active Hood technology as demonstrated on the Volkswagen ID.7, works wherein the bonnet pops open to act as a cushion to help minimise the risk of injury to the pedestrian in case of an accident. While various other cars also have hoods which pop up similarly, what's different with the Volkswagen tech is that the hood can retract back to its original position if the impact is avoided. On other vehicles, the driver either has to climb out of the car and push the hood back into its original position or visit a service centre. However, the Volkswagen tech automatically retracts the hood, once the car senses that the danger has passed.
Volkswagen reportedly even tested out its new active hood tech by putting a dummy in front of its moving ID.7. The new tech with the car's emergency braking system is said to have worked flawlessly.
