Scoop! Maruti Grand Vitara crash-tested at Bharat NCAP

Maruti Grand Vitara has been spied inside the Bharat NCAP facility. It looks like the car has been crash tested and the overall performance of the car seems to be pretty good
The person who sent the pics to the Youtuber says that Grand Vitara can achieve 4 or 5 star rating.

Can we expect the results to come out by this year end It would be exciting to see a Maruti scoring 4/5 star after ages!

Awesome scoop. I don’t have any information about this one and have not had much time for cars lately, but as always with scoops it’s best to wait until official publication. Last thing you want is broken expectations (eg. Carens).

The images look publication quality and are probably web scraped. BNCAP has a user acceptance testing website that is public, I’ll have to dig into that and trace the source if there’s nothing in the video.

re: Scoop! Maruti Grand Vitara crash-tested at Bharat NCAP

Considering the Vitara Brezza scored 4 stars in the GNCAP, the Grand Vitara with its added safety features should score at least 4 stars, However, I expect a 5-star result in the BNCAP and a good showing from Maruti after a long time.

Re: Scoop! Maruti Grand Vitara crash-tested at Bharat NCAP

Something is not adding up.

The car in first pic is the lower variant, without side curtain airbags. And its being tested for side impact. You can make it out from the wheel caps and absence of roof rails.

The second pic too is of lower (Sigma/Delta) variant, without side and curtain airbags and it is being tested for frontal impact.

The photo in the thumbnail of the Youtube video is of higher model (Zeta/Alfa) with 6 airbags and it shows side impact having being tested.

For me I don't get it. Why to test multiple variants which have different safety parameters. Or is it some new testing strategy of BNCAP to test all variants across the spectrum of a particular model so that lower models with fewer safety features as well as upper models with full set of safety features are tested together ?

This is the case with BNCAP as well as new GNCAP. The side pole test is done with optional curtain airbags fitted. For 5 stars in BNCAP 2024 it is required to have at least 30% units produced with curtain airbags (same as GNCAP 2022). For GNCAP 2024 it is 70%.

You can watch the Taigun GNCAP test, you will observe the same thing.

Ok but it still doesn't explain why they tested side "impact" test on the variant without side/curtain airbags (see first picture of Grey GV) and the the side "pole" test with the variant with 6 airbags.

The side barrier impact is easy to comfortably pass without side airbags. But in the pole test it is very rare, most likely the head would likely cross the ‘red’ capping limit and the dummy would then have to be recertified for R95. In GNCAP the pole test is not allowed without at least some side head protection system. Euro NCAP have changed this and Latin NCAP will soon but GNCAP haven’t. Please watch the GNCAP Taigun/Slavia/Scorpio-N films.

Re: Scoop! Maruti Grand Vitara crash-tested at Bharat NCAP

Shall be awesome if it scores anything like 4 or more. The Brezza has scored 4. But the Brezza is in the nearly Rs 8.5 to Rs 14.5 L price range, while the Grand Vitara is in the nearly Rs 11 to Rs 20 L plus price range.

What about the entry level segment Marutis and the next higher segment above that? Cars from these Teo segments are the best sellers from MSIL, making it India's largest car maker. And if these cars used by millions are still unsafe on the roads, then MSIL needs to be labelled as one still taking lives of millions for granted, without any commitment to provide safer cars.

Structure seems stable, cabin looks intact in the second image , no impact on the pillars unlike Hyundai / Kia models

I hope this was a sarcastic comment. Or are we really expecting BNCAP to take 6 months to publish results?

Another point, BNCAP didn't give out ratings on cars we didn't already know. It's such a joke. Wasting taxpayers money giving salaries for free.

Re: Scoop! Maruti Grand Vitara crash-tested at Bharat NCAP

Maruti Suzuki India will be doomed within 2 years if they are not able to launch safe cars. This is the third time I'm hearing that Maruti has crash tested their cars with BNCAP. I want to buy another Maruti Suzuki car but I'm anxiously waiting for a 5 star rated BNCAP/GNCAP crash tested car.

Re: Scoop! Maruti Grand Vitara crash-tested at Bharat NCAP

What is a 5 star BNCAP rating equivalent to in GNCAP or ANCAP? This is very important to understand as all the previous Mahindras, VW, Skoda and Tatas achieved the top ratings in GNCAP. Maruti should not run away to glory with inferior testing criteria.

Best to wait for the official rating to be published as there is much more to the result than the car “looking” good. Airbags going off wrong (Carens), pedals intruding (Creta), pretensioners not going off at all (Ertiga), etc.

Look at this image of the Creta. It looks fine but you can’t spot the fact that the pedals were driven backwards nearly 20cm, which is the difference between a ‘borderline 3 star’ and a comfortable 4 at the time.

I do hope that the Grand Vitara scores well and am quite optimistic that it has been engineered to do so, but IMO let’s not jump to conclusions because this is something a lot of buyers care about deeply.

The image of the car shows number 110324, does it not say that the test was conducted in March 2024?

The new Nexon car for the test which was already released also has similar format written on the side(140524) which says that the test happened in May 2024 for Nexon.

Is it possible that the car did not perform as per the expectations of the brand and they have asked to not release the ratings? Maruti as a brand has a big lobby which can stop things in the automotive industry given that BNCAP is now government owned.

Global NCAP tested the Bolero Neo in the 18th week (May) of 2022 and released the result in April 2024. Even the i20 was tested a couple weeks before the XUV700 and rated 6 months after it. Euro NCAP as well have often delayed results for unforeseen factors. Clearly there is no fixed time between testing and publication.

For hybrids for example, the ICE and hybrid variants have to be tested separately for front and pole impact (side barrier is ok to repeat as per the protocols). That could cause delays.
