The DALI too has been "re-floated" and taken to a dock for un-loading its cargo and repairs. This time they used tugs to move her.
Apparently they had ballasted the forward end for stability reasons and had to pump it out after the broken section of the bridge on its forecastle deck was removed.

That's good news. Took a quick look, will check it out further tonight.

I saw work leading up to this before I went to bed yesterday (this morning, as most people call it) and knew it was due to happen.

I think they wanted to be very sure that the explosives and other work to clear the deck, removing many tons of steel, would not set the ship free to drift

According to a retired Captain from my building it may have happened due to wrongly shifting the fuel source from light to heavy diesel in unfavorable conditions.

couldn't be, they wouldn't change fuel within port limits, and that too with the pilot onboard. there's a minimum Nautical mile rule and no Chief Engineer or captain would try and save fuel by doing this in the USA.

Read the temporary report I posted earlier, already ruled out.

Yup. She sails to Virginia for offloading her containers and thereafter to Norfolk for undergoing Hull repairs to her damaged section.

I have read the preliminary report from NTSB. Awaiting the final report as and when it comes. Should be an interesting read. An unfortunate maritime incident indeed.

I wonder, is it safe to cross the Atlantic for the Hull repair with such damage?

The vessel transitioning from Baltimore to Norfolk international terminal will transit through Chesapeake bay and wouldn't have to cross the Atlantic.

As I gather from internet, the distance between Baltimore and Norfolk terminal is around 168 miles and transit time is 12 hours at 14 Knots speed through Chesapeake bay.

Temporary repairs may be carried out at Baltimore and thereafter vessel woild be surveyed by competent authorities such as class surveyors, P&I surveyors and port authorities who declare the vessel to be sound & fit for her passage to Norfolk for further repairs.

Now, if you are asking if a vessel with similar Hull damage is safe to cross the Atlantic, then it's NO. If the structural integrity of the Hull is compromised, then the vessel is essentially Not Seaworthy and is deemed unfit for sea passage.

Re: USA: Baltimore bridge collapses after cargo ship crashes into it

Haha, yes. And it would mean negotiating the Atlantic, the English Channel and the North Sea.

Ashamed to have to say that I don't know if Norfolk UK has any big ports with major ship-repair yards. Jeroen will be able to tell us. According to me, Felixstowe would probably be closest, and that's Suffolk.

Anyway, back to Dali. I'm doubting that, after such a collision shock, one would even trust the container fastenings to hold in any amount of sea mid ocean. Which we now know she isn't going to do anyway. But engineers' comments?

Re: USA: Baltimore bridge collapses after cargo ship crashes into it

MV DALI arrives at Virginia International gateway, this Tuesday and discharged around 1700 containers. Once the containers are discharged, she will move across to Norfolk International Gateway for further repairs.
