So, the question here is pretty simple. Would you prefer having an ADAS On/Off switch that would activate or deactivate ALL the functions of ADAS? Or do you prefer having to select features individually?
Voted = Yes.

However, I would prefer some nuance like the following:
  1. Have a master ADAS on/off switch WITH memory function so that it remembers the last user preference. This switch should have a "long-press" mode to enable/disable ADAS, preferably with an indicator LED to indicate the current state.
  2. The same switch can be used in a "single-press" mode to provide quick access to activate an ADAS menu.
    1. The menu could come up either in the instrument cluster or on the in-car entertainment screen.
    2. This menu would have a list of all the ADAS features
    3. The user can manually toggle them and/or set the sensitivity levels, as applicable.
    4. The menu should have a memory function to remember the last used settings.
    5. BONUS: The menu could have memory profiles so that the settings of more than one driver can be stored. This is useful when multiple drivers regularly use the same car (eg Spouses, siblings, etc.).

Why is the master kill switch a non-negotiable item?
  • ADAS adoption and knowledge isn't widespread. This could create confusion in an unsuspecting driver who jumps into your vehicle with a "non-ADAS" mindset and panics when ADAS intervenes.
  • When someone uses your car you can simply instruct them to switch ADAS off with one click if required. That's a lot easier to communicate than to specify how to get to each setting and toggle them off. This would be extremely useful in one-off situations where someone else might need to drive your car (in an emergency etc.)

Re: ADAS On/Off button | Yay or Nay?

I had similar sentiments that ADAS is useless in India. After I did long drives with my Tucson, I found it very useful. What I would appreciate is presets (My city everyday driving settings are different than my long drive settings). Unless you own a car and regularly use that ADAS car you are probably going to find it to be intrusive.

If there has to be a single button I would like it to toggle between ON-Warning-OFF

Re: ADAS On/Off button | Yay or Nay?

I am quite happy with the ADAS in my MG ZS EV. I have found it to be better calibrated compared to Seltos, which is intrusive. I never felt the need to disengage it for past 4 months of ownership. The settings are fairly well designed and helpful for ADAS. There were two instances wherein emergency brakes were applied post warning. The only challenge is that the speed limits discovered by the car is always the lower one (wherever such signs are present) which is for heavy vehicles. I believe MG can fix it with a software update.

I think ADAS is incredibly useful and adds to the safety of a car. However, redundancy is key and there should definitely be an off switch

Missed the voting. I would have chosen Yes. There must be a kill switch for the ( stealing this phrase from Motorinc) Advanced Driver Annoyance System.

Voted Yes.

In the entire car ownership tenure one can't avoid the circumstances when someone borrows your ADAS-equipped car. Not everyone even the same age group knows all the features. Can be dangerous as well. It is better to have a kill switch.

Voted for individual feature switches.

But it’d be nice to have both. A master switch and option to toggle individual features on/off when ADAS is enabled.

Re: ADAS On/Off button | Yay or Nay?

Voted for Yes!

I love the ADAS features in my Verna and few of them like Lane Keep Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control can be easily toggled using the steering mounted controls. But somethings like Lane Departure Warning, Emergency Braking during parking can't be switched off unless we go deep into the Vehicle control settings on the touchscreen.

My wife is scared to drive the Verna because everytime is cumbersome to switch off these features and she is not yet comfortable driving with them on, especially the Lane Departure warning which slightly gives a nudge on the steering when you try to switch lanes without using the turn indicators!

Also on the same note, it'll help new drivers. 2 days back near Chennai Raj Bhavan, where there is stop and go traffic with unruly two wheelers trying to squeeze between the gaps, I saw a brand new Verna (with ribbons and all) rear ended by a Tata Ace. I stopped by and asked the person what happened, and he said "The car suddenly braked by itself".

Re: ADAS On/Off button | Yay or Nay?

Have driven the XUV700 with ADAS and it is not as intrusive as it may seem from the outside. You can adjust levels of sensitivity (distance from car ahead) which provides a lot of control to the driver.
Agreed, that it is scary for the initial few km, but once you use it, you get used to it and it doesn't bother you or kill the enjoyment of drives for the average driver.
However, if I have to have my way, I would prefer to manually adjust (switch on/ off; change sensitivity) each feature individually rather than have a complete on / off.

Re: ADAS On/Off button | Yay or Nay?

Over the past year, I've relied on ADAS while driving my Harrier in Delhi, and I've become convinced that it's an essential feature. I've found that adjusting the sensitivity of the auto emergency braking to medium has yielded the best results for me.

Even when friends have taken the wheel during long drives, we've never felt the need to disable any of ADAS's features. The warnings provided by ADAS have proven invaluable, especially in situations where bikers suddenly appear in blind spots.

Integrating ADAS into most cars could lead to safer roads. It not only familiarizes drivers with auto emergency braking but also encourages safer driving practices, such as maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles.

However, if there were an option to disable ADAS, there's a risk that people might stop using it altogether, which could make our roads even more dangerous. It's important to note that ADAS doesn't detract from the enjoyment of driving; in fact, it enhances safety without compromising the thrill of the driving experience.

In summary, ADAS is a crucial tool for improving road safety, and its widespread adoption could lead to a positive shift in driving behavior without sacrificing the enjoyment of driving.
