Don’t wear Apple Vision Pro while driving, U.S. transport chief says

According to media reports, the US Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, has warned drivers not to drive their cars while wearing Apple's new Vision Pro headset.

Don’t wear Apple Vision Pro while driving, U.S. transport chief says-visionprocybertruck.jpg

The need to state the obvious came after a recent viral video came to light showing a man driving his Tesla Cybertruck while wearing the Vision Pro headset. The video shows the driver with both hands off the steering wheel and performing several hand gestures to control the features within the Vision Pro.

Buttigieg took to the social media platform, X (formerly Twitter) to state, "Reminder — ALL advanced driver assistance systems available today require the human driver to be in control and fully engaged in the driving task at all times."

Apple does state that the Vision Pro headset comes with "built-in safety features to help prevent collisions and falls", however, these refer to when users bump into a wall, not being involved in a car crash.

Sounds like stating the obvious, until I remember bleach bottles need a 'do not drink contents' label these days.

Unbelievable. With sunroofs requiring a disclaimer to not put children/heads out of the car, the likes of them will totally attempt (and completely) deserve this disclaimer. It should be disabled while at some speeds to stop this.

We're talking about Americans here, who happily sell guns but will affix overly protective caution labels on pretty much everything and transport rules so that people don't sue them for not telling them to do something which seemed 'obvious'

I believe the TikToks showing people using it while driving are a bunch of influencers overacting because when Casey Neistat was reviewing them, the moment it detected motion it either stopped tracking or the window moves away.

It may work differently when seated in cars but I don't think Apple would have released the headset into the wild without idiotproofing them.

Times like this, i am reminded of the quote attributed to Einstein (fact check anyone?)

"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."

As tech gets smarter we will end up getting stupider (Is that even a word?)

Apple Fans + Tesla Fanatics + Tik Tok - Commonsense = Natural Selection.

Here's a hilarious take on this madness,

Hahaha! I thought the first line was epic. And then I read the “hilarious take”.

As a driver who shares the road day in and day out with other drivers here in Phoenix, more than this latest fad/madness what really bothers me is the texting and driving which goes on unabated even when driving a big pickup truck at 80MPH.

I remember there used to a be drive by the cops to fine errant drivers, but sadly that has been stopped completely now. Sometimes I feel that the rules and regulations that are needed to be enforced as technology progresses lags by decades.

In all seriousness, why would anyone think of using a VR headset, let alone the Vision Pro, in a car? Like that's the last place anyone would think of using a VR headset..

People, use your 1/2 brain cells that God has given you!!

But why? What could go wrong? Is there any research proving that having 2 or 3 floating screens showing interactive content infront of your eyes can be distracting while driving?

No!

But at least the driver and car remained in the same physical world no matter the # of screens. Now the driver is elevating himself into the virtual world

We can imagine the kind of tom foolery people will indulge in when autonomous drving advances and becomes a common place, we have seen ADAS misuse already. We are just becoming too irresponsible the more creature comforts we are getting access to. Like they say, all tools are weapons in the hands of wrong people. For every progress we plan to make/release going forward which frees the human mind, the makers will have to take 2 steps back and seriously think what if....

The Americans are probably behind the famous myth "Humans only use 10% of their brain". I mean we can't really blame them, can we? When we look at stupid things like this, it does seem very likely to be the case. But we've got to give it to them for coming up with such innovative ways to die!

Nothing so far. Infact they even have a special travel mode which can be enabled so that the headset can be used while travelling.
