Made-in-India Hyundai Verna scores 5 stars in the Global NCAP!

The latest round of Global NCAP crash tests conducted as part of the Safer cars for India program has awarded the new Hyundai Verna a perfect 5-star safety rating. This marks a significant achievement for Hyundai, as it is the first time one of their vehicles has received a 5-star rating from Global NCAP. The tested model was manufactured in India specifically for the Indian market and comes standard with features such as 6 airbags, ESC (Electronic Stability Control), rear ISOFIX mounts, and seatbelt reminders for all seats.

The Verna is one of the last vehicles to undergo testing under the Safer cars for India program. Moving forward, the responsibility for crash testing vehicles intended for the Indian market will be transferred to Bharat NCAP, effective October 1.

Additionally, the Hyundai Verna achieved a 5-star rating for both adult and child occupant protection, although it received a less favorable assessment for bodyshell integrity, which was rated as unstable.

The Verna achieved a score of 28.18 out of a possible 34 points for adult occupant protection. However, it's worth noting that the test found the bodyshell to be unstable and unable to withstand additional impact. In the frontal impact test, the Verna provided good protection for the heads and necks of both the driver and passenger. Still, the driver's chest protection was only marginal, whereas passenger chest protection was rated as good.

Additionally, the knees of both the driver and passenger received marginal protection, as they could potentially come into contact with hazardous structures behind the vehicle's dashboard. The footwell area was also deemed unstable.

In the side impact test, the Verna offered good protection for the head, pelvis, and abdomen. However, chest protection was considered adequate. In the side pole impact test, the Verna received an 'OK' rating, with good head and pelvis protection, marginal chest protection, and adequate abdominal protection.

The Verna comes equipped with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as a standard feature, and its performance met Global NCAP's requirements. It also adhered to UN 127 and GTR9 pedestrian protection standards.

For child occupant protection, the Verna received a total score of 42 out of 49 points, including a perfect 12 out of 12 points for Child Restraint System (CRS) installation and 24 out of 24 points in the dynamic score.

During testing, dummies representing an 18-month-old and a 3-year-old child were secured in rear-facing seats using i-size anchorages and a support leg. These measures effectively prevented head exposure during a frontal crash, and the CRS offered comprehensive side impact protection.

The Verna includes 3-point seatbelts in all seating positions as a standard feature. However, it lacks the ability to deactivate the front passenger airbag when a rear-facing CRS is installed in that seat.

Interestingly, a CRS failure was observed after the side impact test. The CRS manufacturer attributed this to a one-time occurrence. To confirm this, Global NCAP conducted a subsequent higher-energy side impact test, which did not result in any further CRS failures.

In the midsize sedan segment, Global NCAP also conducted crash tests on the Slavia and Virtus in addition to the Verna. While all three cars achieved 5-star ratings, the latter two performed slightly better in terms of adult occupant protection and had stable body shell integrity.

Re: Scoop! Looks like GNCAP has tested another Hyundai. Can you identify it?

So the Verna gets 5 stars inspite of having an unstable body shell? I understand from purely the test perspective but then what is the use of such an observation( stable/ unstable body shell ) if it doesnt amount to any positive/ negative rating at an overall level. Because we also have an Alto with a stable body shell and 1 stars.

Great achievement by Hyundai. However wondering what is the weightage of Body Shell integrity on overall score in GNCAP. It would be helpful if informed Bhpians like @ron178 can throw some light on it. As far as I know, Verna is the only car with Unstable rated Body shell and still managed to score 5 star rating.

Re: Scoop! Looks like GNCAP has tested another Hyundai. Can you identify it?

I don't want to bash GNCAP, but I think they don't know even simple mathematics.

28.18 out of 34.00 for Adult is 4.14 stars.
42.00 out of 49.00 for Child is 4.29 stars.

So the average of these two scores is 4.22 stars.

Hence the new Hyundai Verna does not even get 4.5 stars.

re: Made-in-India Hyundai Verna scores 5 stars in the Global NCAP!

I think it's a good look for Hyundai. Prospective customers won't get in the nitty gritty of fine print on GNCAP report all they will see is the 5 stars which will definitely boost Verna's sales.

I mean they have pretty much nailed everything with this generation and now we might be looking at the best seller of C-Segment sedan category.

Must be how they go about things?

This is for the VW/Skoda Twins:
"The India-spec Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus have both scored a 5-star rating in the latest round of Global NCAP safety tests. Like their SUV siblings, the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun, the sedans also get a 5-star rating for adult and child occupants under the updated safety test protocols.

Skoda Slavia, VW Virtus got 29.71 out of 34 points in adult occupant protection
Both sedans received the same rating as their SUV counterparts
They scored 42 out of 49 points in child occupant proctection
The Slavia and Virtus are the first midsize sedans to get a 5-star rating under GNCAP’s new testing protocols. However, the Kushaq, Taigun and Mahindra Scorpio N were the first three vehicles to receive a 5-star rating under the updated protocol."

Seems so! Alas G-NCAP has it's ways of scoring and giving stars

Agreed! City's already weakening sales due to competition and cannibalization may just worsen

Stars are discrete nonnegative integers and not linearly correlated with points.

Here is the rule used:

Good going Hyundai!

Now, will the upcoming Creta also be 5-star ?

That would be good for customers and may force VW/Skoda to add some more features to their cars.

They could have done this from the facelifted Seltos itself!

Re: Made-in-India Hyundai Verna scores 5 stars in the Global NCAP!

Hahahaha! Wow-o-Wow! Take a bow, Hyundai. The Korean giants have finally woken up. This is really the kind of news that makes one's day .

So, the Verna is now:

- The most futuristic looking sedan in the C2 segment
- The most powerful C2 sedan, with 158 horses on tap and a dual-clutch AT
- The most equipped with a laundry list of features & tech
- 5-star safety and a long list of safety equipment that includes level 2 ADAS tech, 6 airbags, ESC, 3-point seatbelts for all, rear disc brakes, front & rear parking sensors etc.
- Crazy long 7-year extended warranty available

Top that up with decent cabin space & a neutral suspension, and you have an absolute all-rounder! This is what it takes to spice up a dying sedan segment.

This is the power of the internet, social media & bad press. It's all the strong criticism that got to them. Kia India is still touchy about all the negativity around the Seltos' poor GNCAP showing.

This perfectly sums up my feeling also on seeing this news! One of the first reaction of people when I told them I got the new Verna is that it is not safe as the VAG twins and not crash rated! Now a perfect 5 stars for the Verna and the first one for Hyundai!

The Bodyshell Integrity seems concerning though. Not sure of the way how GNCAP rates these. If someone could throw some light on this, it would be great!
