Speed cameras on ECR Chennai - Mahabalipuram now fully active

Auto speed cameras were installed on the ECR between Kanathur and Mahabalipuram over 2 years ago at quite cost to exchequer, but were not functional. They would flash if a vehicle was going over 100 kmph but nothing would come off it.

They are now fully functional and I got trapped, with a Rs 1000 challan automatically issued. Someone had run over a puppy and we were rushing it to a vet on Sunday night and we got fined.

I personally welcome this move and think it will bring down accidents!

Wow! Hopefully that should bring in some law and order in the city! Even if not in the city, this side of the city has to be controlled. Hopefully now, it will be!

This is really important for those idiots driving at 130KMPH at midnight!!

I agree with you, but I hope you are not referring to me! We were on an emergency. Someone ran over a pup and didn’t stop. Upon checking it was hurt bad with a head injury but was still breathing and holding on. No ambulance for dogs on the ECR and only option was to rush it to my vet in Neelankarai some 30 km from where we found it. Poor thing is a fighter and still holding on, he’s in an induced coma in an oxygen cage.

Where is the speed limit 100? I only remember seeing 40 till Akkarai and 80 somewhere near the toll.

And these cams used to flash if you are above 80.

I live on the ECR. From day 1, cameras would flash only at 100, never at 80.

The speed limit at Kanathur - after Mayajaal and just before Altis Oceanique apartments is actually 40, and there’s a camera speed trap there that busts you only if you are going above 100.

Even in other zones, the max speed limit is 80, but the cameras are configured for 100 kmph.

Maybe it’s some highway thing - where speed limits on highways are supposed to be 100 kmph.

This is fellow we were speeding to try to save. 2 days on, he is still fighting with severe head trauma. Showing slow signs of improvement. Let’s hope for the best - he is in very good care in Paws and Claws, Neelankarai. The doc says that we managed to reach the hospital within the golden time to give him better chances - they managed to stem internal bleeding and could address his brain swelling. So I am glad we came as fast as we could and have no qualms in paying the speeding challan!

Hey, no I wasn't blaming you! Praying for the poor puppy to be safe! You saved a life! I can't not thank you for that! Very few people like you exist sir!
