Re: Global NCAP to end 'Safer Cars for India' campaign after 10 years

Very sad to see the end of an organization that changed the way people think. There was no real need to fix what wasn't broken - the only people who complained about Global NCAP were the manufacturers who kept failing its tests.

Above all, GNCAP had a reputation for doing their job without bias and not caring that Maruti or Hyundai/Kia were upset. I'm not sure if BNCAP will have the same kind of immunity from the lobbying groups.

Re: Global NCAP to end 'Safer Cars for India' campaign after 10 years

It's somewhat like some of the better Central laws and rules for motor vehicles that get distorted by various state governments to their own advantage. Like the very recent incident, wherein the Karnataka govt does not allow private sector employees otherwise eligible to opt for BH registrations. Such rules are tailored by the state by distorting these to garner wealth, depriving such employees of their rights.

GNCAP norms could be diluted by Bharat NCAP. The same person who saw no logic in six airbags in his tiny 0 star cars and who has historically said more than two decades ago that his then tiny 796 cc base model is safer than a scooter, is today a much respected spokesperson for our automobile industry. He is surely in tow with other ZERO and ONE STARRERS who are all racking their brains to score high in the Bharat NCAP "exams". They must be partying under one roof, celebrating the exit of David Ward wiith his lethal (for this ZERO and ONE star lobby) GNCAP.

Re: Global NCAP to end 'Safer Cars for India' campaign after 10 years

When BNCAP kicks in does it mean that manufacturers can't send the cars for a GNCAP testing??

If it doesn't I think manufacturers will use that to make their products stand out, I for one can see VW /Mahindra and other manufacturers who import still going for the GNCAP or even for both multiple NCAP'testings.

At the end of the day a safe car is great car be it in the city or the highway ,be it at 10 or 100kms/hr.

I have a hunch that, right now, government is cajoling the reluctant manufacturers to adopt BNCAP; and sometime down the line, it will be made mandatory.

As far as independence of evaluation is concerned, all OEMs will be keeping tight watch on the conduct and management of evaluation as they are also interested parties.

Are they indirectly hinting at BNCAP being liberal against the stringent GNCAP? His statement gives me that impression.

Hope BNCAP doesn't bow down to manufacturers demands in anyway possible!

Could also be some car for Africa where cheap Chinese cars and imports are common.

Re: Global NCAP to end 'Safer Cars for India' campaign after 10 years

It's said that sometimes artists are not recognized until after their death. The fate of GNCAP's 'Safer Cars for India' campaign seems to be similar

I am sure there have been threads on this forum where members have questioned if GNCAP is biased against MS; does the fact that they never tested Harrier/Safari mean that they are basically doing Tata's bidding; questioned their motives, test methodologies; if they are trying to push some agenda through their safer cars program etc.

Now, it seems GNCAP is cleared of all suspicion and the new kid on the block is the punching bag - even before the first results have been published.

Bolero Neo could become India's next zero star car because of a clause Global NCAP silently appended to their protocols early last year.

I'm a bit confused now that the Verna Test result is out. Is the Campaign over or not?

That's because the Verna was tested in May, but an additional verification test had to be performed in mid-August to confirm that a child seat failure in the first test was a one-off.

In any case, GNCAP said during the Bharat NCAP launch that they had 10 more results for the project. One was the Verna, and I'm convinced 2 of them are an updated Kia Carens and the Bolero Neo. There are also strong hints that the new Nexon/twins are included. And if i had to hazard a guess I don't think GNCAP would want to end their work before taking a dig at Stellantis for the Indian C3.

Also, during the IAA Mobility event they invited global media to a one-off car-to-car crash test which should be publicized soon.

EDIT: from today's press release:

Alejandro Furas quoted in Financial Express article:
Quote:
But all is not lost, Furas has revealed that, “Before Our Safer Cars for India campaign concludes and Bharat NCAP’s testing comes on stream, we have several tests to publish over the coming months during this period of transition. After that we are planning a new initiative which will be relevant to a number of emerging vehicle markets including India.”

In a couple of weeks, Global NCAP will announce new crash test results, new vehicle safety research project(s) and more. Source.

Re: Global NCAP to end 'Safer Cars for India' campaign after 10 years

Global NCAP secretary general Alejandro Furas reflects on India and hopes Latin America takes inspiration.
Quote:
[Interviewer] Global NCAP launched last year the new Bharat NCAP program for the Indian market, what similarities and differences did they find with the Latin American market that Latin NCAP evaluates?

[Furas] The Bharat NCAP program was launched by the Indian government itself in August 2023, with the institutional support of Global NCAP materialized with a Memorandum of Understanding, which aims to replace the work that Global NCAP has been doing in that country for more than 10 years. Global NCAP is gradually stopping buying its own vehicles for testing and is only accepting voluntary testing from the brands, to result in Bharat NCAP starting to operate locally. So far of this note, Bharat NCAP has published a single result, we hope that the program can have much more dynamic presentation of results and impact.

[Furas] The great challenges that Global NCAP had when it began testing in India in 2014 were mainly the regulatory state and the state of the fleet, which were much worse than those in Latin America. But unlike Latin America, India changed much faster despite being a market with approximately twice the population of our entire region. This was due to the fact that several factors reacted positively and decisively at the same time.

[Furas] First, the great dissemination and massification that the message had in India. Several media of great influence in the market, from the car category and other categories, helped to establish and spread the message, beyond the commercial commitments of the media. This helped a lot and very quickly to change the mentality of the Indian market and arouse the interest and concern of people, who did not have the issue of security on the radar.

[Furas] The change was also dramatic on the part of the brands, who responded very quickly, much faster than in Latin America. They did not question the principles and objectives, they did not leave, there were no tricks, there were no, as we sometimes say, those attempts to gain time or gain ground. They were direct and at different rates, they all showed improvements. Since the beginning of the Indian tests, the industry of that country was not competitive in quality and technology with our region. But in a few years that took an absolute turn, first with the production of Ecosport for export to Europe until today where they replace products exported from Brazil to Mexico with cars manufactured in India by the same brand, in the case of [sic] Nivus and [sic] Taigo (T-Cross).

[Furas] And finally from the regulatory point, since, a few years after starting our work, the government of India improved the requirements for new vehicles and motorcycles with extended deadlines but with a clear view on the demands. This is what Latin NCAP asks local governments to indicate where the regulation is going for the next decade and more than regulate in the short term. After 10 years of work, popular cars in India are in the process of offering 6 airbags, ESP and pedestrian protection as standard. We see examples such as the Hyundai Grand i10, the Verna (Indian Accent) or the recent launches of Suzuki Maruti and Tata. Today in India there are vehicles of good safety and cheaper than in Latin America, which are the same as those in our region, which represents a strong competitor for vehicles in Latin America. Let's hope that the Latin American governments that have turned a deaf ear to the experiences of European governments with Euro NCAP, the Australian and the North American, can finally learn from the path that the Indian market has traveled.

Re: Global NCAP to end 'Safer Cars for India' campaign after 10 years

I honestly believe that the BNCAP should be a mandate and not an option. Otherwise, Maruti Suzuki will take great disadvantage of it. Even Global NCAP slammed Maruti Suzuki for their pathetic ratings.

IMHO, I never will have a Maruti Suzuki in my garage given their poor build quality and pathetic attitude when it comes to safety. They are a damn hypocrite - reminding you of their MD R. C. Bhargava's statement when he said that more safety features means reckless driving.

Tata, Mahindra, and many others learnt their lessons. But Maruti Suzuki has not and will never do so. And Indians are naive to fall for their pathetic advertisements of high fuel economy guarantees and lower prices, but at the cost of safety.
