Oh Bangalore, what is wrong with you? This is almost a daily news now from the city.

There is a growing resentment among native Kannadigas in Bangalore, particularly from the outer peripheries of Karnataka, who feel increasingly marginalized in a city that's otherwise very progressive. The influx of highly skilled professionals from across India has created an environment where many Kannadigas in Bangalore struggle to compete for well-paid jobs, leading to a sense of inadequacy and underemployment, especially among young native men. This frustration often manifests in negative interactions with non-natives who appear more affluent, exacerbated by language barriers when English or Hindi is involved. This issue resonates with similar sentiments observed globally, such as recently in the UK, where economically disadvantaged local yobs express discontent towards immigrants. While improvements in education and awareness of job market dynamics may eventually alleviate these tensions with each passing generation, many low-wage working men continue to feel left behind. For newcomers to Bangalore, it's advisable to remain calm, ensure personal safety, have a dash cam, drive a safe car and be mindful of these underlying social dynamics.

Mods, apologies for going off-topic.

Re: Alarming incident caught on dashcam - Assault & road rage by thugs in Bangalore

I am deeply troubled by witnessing these two extreme, deliberate, and violent road rage incidents. I have love and respect for this city, which has given so much to someone a non-native like me. It’s hard to accept and overlook how a few criminal mindsets are tarnishing my city’s reputation.

I pray that the victims of these incidents recover from the trauma soon.

Is this zero tolerance and rage a result of the high vehicle population (which has certainly surged multiple times after COVID and the later push for returning to the office), poor road infrastructure, or unrealistic and stressful commute times?

Or is this due to the influence of heroic cinema... or the sheer jealousy of unemployed, wasted youth who can’t stand someone with a better standard of living asking them to be a bit more disciplined on the road or to give way? “Who does this fool think he is, honking at me?”

These are intentional violent crimes, not just some rare incidents of road rage. These individuals are shameless wannabe criminals. The law needs to be strict enough that someone could not even dare of spinning such acts, rather than allowing them to get bailed out in a day or two. We need laws similar to those in Western or Middle Eastern countries (or punishments like those in the movie ‘Aparichit’?)

I wrote about my recent road rage incident a few days ago, and I thank God it didn’t escalate. It ended like a fairy tale, with the perpetrator being caught and duly dealt with on the spot by the Bangalore City Police.

I mentioned earlier, I learned to stay calm in these situations thanks to this forum. However, I can’t stop thinking about how my own incident could have escalated to this level.

Would I have stayed calm or gotten involved in the fatal scuffle? No amount of calmness or attempts to defuse the situation would have yielded a positive outcome. I would have done anything in self-defense, or even more, to protect my family member.

I was fortunate that the police arrived on time. But what if, in such extreme situations, the police get stuck in Bengaluru’s traffic or you can’t escape the miscreants due to road congestion? I already have a dashcam in the car. What should I do next? Should I keep a baseball bat, pepper spray, or a licensed firearm?
