Its scores are as follows:

Adult Occupant Protection: 20%
Quote:
Frontal impact: The protection offered to the driver and passenger head and neck was good. Driver and Passenger chest showed adequate protection. Driver and one passenger’s knees showed marginal protection as they can impact with dangerous structures behind the fascia, the other passenger knee showed good protection. Driver tibias showed adequate protection, and passenger’s tibias showed good protection. Footwell area was rated as stable. The bodyshell was rated as stable and is capable of withstanding further loadings. Side impact: Head and pelvis protection was good; abdomen protection was adequate and chest protection was poor leading to zero points for this test. Side Pole Impact: was not performed as the car does not offer side head protection as standards. Whiplash: showed poor performance. the car can not prove the fillment of rear impact (R32) pre-requisites. AEB City: The car does not offer AEB City even as optional. Rescue sheet: not available.
Child Occupant Protection: 17%
Quote:
The child seat for the 3-year-old child was installed rearward facing using ISOFIX anchorages and support leg and was capable of preventing excessive forward movement of the head. Frontal and side impact protection was good. The Q1.5 was installed rearward facing using ISOFIX connectors and a support leg while it offered good protection for the frontal and side impact protection. As the manufacturer declined to recommend CRSs for the test the dynamic score was 0. The car manufacturer has a clear table in the instruction manual showing the positions and CRs mode appropriate for each child age or size or CRS group. The car offers ISOFIX anchorages in rear outboard positions. Disabling the passenger airbag when a rearward facing CRS in passenger seat was not possible. Some of the CRS could be installed properly in the required positions.
Pedestrian Protection: 64%
Quote:
The car does not prove to meet Pedestrian protection UN regulations. The car showed majority of areas with good to marginal protection levels. AEB VRU: not offered even as optional, as ESC is not standard eventually it would not be able to score AEB points.
Safety Assist: 7%
Quote:
The car does not offer ESC as standard. SBR: the car offers only driver SBR. SA: the car does not offer a speed limitation device. BSD: The car does not offer BSD. LSS and RED: the car does not offer the technology and fitment rate must be matched. AEB Interurban: The car does not have AEB inter urban and does not have standard ESC.

The Toyota Yaris Hatchback/Sedan, made in Thailand or Brazil, was reassessed and was audited in the side impact where it showed door opening. All doors remaining closed is a technical requirement of the UNECE Regulation 95 test carried out in the same configuration as Latin NCAP's side impact test.

The Yaris scored 1 overall star, showing the poorest star rating for any Toyota model tested by Latin NCAP so far.

The bodyshell was rated as unstable and it is not capable of withstanding further loadings. Side impact: Head and pelvis protection was good while chest and abdomen protection was adequate. Side impact showed door opening. Side Pole Impact: was not performed as the car does not offer side head protection as standard. Whiplash: the seat showed marginal protection to the adult neck. UN R32: the car meets the rear impact structure requirements. AEB City: the car does not offer optional AEB city. Rescue sheet availability is not meeting Latin NCAP requirements.
Child Occupant Protection: 64%
Quote:
The child seat for the 3-year-old child was installed rearward facing using ISOFIX anchorages and support leg. It was capable of preventing head exposure and frontal crash protection was good. Side impact protection was good. The Q1.5 was installed rearward facing using ISOFIX anchorages and support leg, it was capable of preventing head exposure and frontal crash protection was good. Side impact protection was good. Some of the CRSs tested for installation pass. Airbag warning when a rearward CRS is installed in the passenger seat was according to Latin NCAP requirements. Passenger airbag could not be disconnected in the case that a rearward facing CRS is installed in the front passenger seat.
Vulnerable Road Users: 62%
Quote:
The car manufacturer did not prove that the car meets Pedestrian protection UN regulations for the Brazilian or Thai version. The car showed majority of areas with adequate to marginal protection levels. AEB VRU: not available in the market for this model.
Safety Assist: 42%
Quote:
The car offers ESC as standard. Moose test max speed was 85 for the ADAC Moose scenario and 75km/h for the Consumer testing scenario. SBR: the car offers front passengers SBR but passenger side SBR did not detect certain passengers being rated as a fail. SA: the car does not offer a speed limitation device. BSD: The car does not offer BSD as standard. LSS and RED: the car does not offer these technologies. AEB Interurban: The car does not have AEB inter urban.

Presentation of results:

The next round of Latin NCAP results will be released in a few weeks.

These results are not valid for the identical cars that are/were sold by Maruti Suzuki and Toyota in the Indian market.

re: 2021 Toyota Yaris and Suzuki Baleno perform poorly in Latin NCAP

Not something completely surprising. It's a known fact that carmakers have always put safety behind as a priority especially when it comes to selling cars in developing markets. Nothing to be shocked at.

OT: Why does the Baleno have a projector headlamp on the passenger side and a halogen headlamp on the driver side? Looks so out of place

Makes sense given that Petrol is retailing at ₹108. MSIL is a visionary, wonder why people criticise them.

re: 2021 Toyota Yaris and Suzuki Baleno perform poorly in Latin NCAP

The Latin NCAP rating for the Toyota Yaris tested in 2019 under older protocol has also been updated to reflect the results of the audit test. The opening of the rear door in the side impact and the failure of the passenger-side seatbelt reminder to detect certain passengers limits the adult occupant protection star rating to three under the older assessment protocol. This means that the older four star rating for adult occupant protection has been revised to three stars for adult occupant protection.

This is not the first time a car has shown differences in performance after an audit test. The Hyundai HB20, Nissan March and Nissan Versa for Latin America have all shown drops in performance after audit tests.

Quote:
The result of the audit tests showed that in the side impact one of the doors opened and the passenger seat seatbelt reminder (SBR) was not properly detecting the passenger and therefore failing to warn about the seatbelt use. Consequently, the safety rating was recalculated and it resulted in a downgrade to three stars for adult occupant protection. The 2019 result was updated accordingly in Latin NCAP website.

re: 2021 Toyota Yaris and Suzuki Baleno perform poorly in Latin NCAP

The conclusion I make from these test results: Get a Maruti if you are buying a car for status - something to park in your garage and to be taken out for the occasional dinner, wedding, festival purchases etc in the great Indian urban crawl.

If you are going to travel on the highways, better to go for more safer cars. These days all vehicles (including trucks) effortlessly cruise at 80+ speeds, the increasing density of vehicles on our roads would mean more chances of accidents than in the past.

Instead Toyota rubbing some of it's expertise on Suzuki, I think it's become vice versa, with Toyota cutting corners like Suzuki does.

Baleno highest rating is 64% for pedestrian protection. If car hit someone it will crumble without injuring the pedestrian. We should appreciate Maruti for making whole car crumble zone.

South Africa, South America, and India - Companies launch unsafe cars specific to these markets.

Eagerly looking at TATA's twitter handle now. Any guesses what are they going to come with?

I don't this deserves a thread. This was always expected. Nothing surprising or shocking here. The Heartect platform will always perform poorly in a crash test.

The only Maruti crash test that surprised everyone was the Vitara Brezza 4 star GNCAP. It must have shocked the Maruti engineers as well and only that deserves a special thread.

re: 2021 Toyota Yaris and Suzuki Baleno perform poorly in Latin NCAP

Latin NCAP is seriously being very tough on budget car manufacturers in the past one year! Not just Suzuki, even cars that had received good ratings earlier have now been reduced to 0 or 1 star rating! e.g. Ford Aspire went from 4 to zero!

They can't come up with anything! With just dual airbags and no standard ESP, even their entire product portfolio will receive a 0 star rating just like the Baleno and Swift etc. The Nexon might receive a 1 star due to it's standard ESC.

Well, that Heartect chassis has scored consistent 3 and 4 star ratings in Europe and even the Ertiga has scored a 4 and 3 respectively in Indonesia and India (Child Protection was still better than the Tata Nexon!). Hence, I would disagree that the Heartect can't score well! It's just that Latin NCAP's protocols have been too stringent these days and hence every new budget car there is receiving a zero or 1 star rating!

I mean, I hope you do know that Maruti engineers are not related to this thread! And yes I do agree that this does not deserve a special thread because this Baleno is a Latin America spec car while only Global NCAP results are applicale to India!

People on this forum hype up Toyota so much and often declare Toyota cars safe without any crash test information. This should be an eye opener for them.

re: 2021 Toyota Yaris and Suzuki Baleno perform poorly in Latin NCAP

A few things to take note of:
  • Please view these ratings for academic interest only. These cars were tested in the left-hand-drive configurations and may or may not be identical to the ones sold in India.
  • These ratings are based on Latin NCAP's new 2020 protocol. Test and assessment protocol for each individual test, each individual box and for the overall star rating can be found on the Latin NCAP website. Here are the criteria for calculating the overall star rating:
    Name: Screenshot 20211029 at 6.01.47 AM.png
Views: 723
Size: 46.4 KB
  • Please do not compare Global NCAP #SaferCarsForIndia ratings to these ratings. Due to severe budget constraints, Global NCAP conducts far fewer tests than Latin NCAP does. For reference, here is what Global NCAP does evaluate from each Latin NCAP section:

    Adult Occupant Protection:
64km/h front offset deformable barrier test
(Latin NCAP uses an identical test configuration but criteria for scoring out of 16.00 are slightly different due to revised performance limits for chest compression which will be used by Global NCAP starting next year)
50km/h side mobile deformable barrier test using the UNECE 95 prescribed barrier and not the AE-MDB.
(Global NCAP only checks for pass/fail of Regulation 95 as a requirement for 5 stars and does not assign a score to side impact - hence, even if a car performs so poorly that it fails the UNECE 95 test, it may score 4 stars under current assessment protocol but a separate score will be assigned to side impact from next year)

    Child Occupant Protection:
Dynamic test: 64km/h front offset deformable barrier test
(Latin NCAP evaluates child occupant protection in MDB side impact too)
Static evaluations: ISOFIX markings, airbag warning labels, CRS markings, ease of installation, presence of GTR/FMVSS compliant 3-point belts in all seating positions etc.

    Vulnerable Road Users:
Pedestrian Protection: GTR9 compliance [currently for Safer Choice Award only, to be a 3 star (adult occupant) requirement starting next year]

    Safety Assist:
Seatbelt reminders: +1.00 total score for all front seating positions (1.00/n for each front seating position when there are n front seating positions) is added to the adult occupant protection score. Scoring the full 1.00 point for front seatbelt reminders is a requisite for 5 stars for adult occupant protection. Rear seatbelt reminders will be evaluated by Global NCAP starting next year.
ESC: GTR8 compliance [currently for Safer Choice Award only, to be a 3 star (adult occupant) requirement starting next year]

There are far more requirements in each section for Latin NCAP's tests, which can be seen in the assessment protocol I linked earlier.
  • Latin NCAP provides an overall star rating while Global NCAP provides separate star ratings for adult and child occupant protection (the former has been modified to accommodate seatbelt reminder points).
  • It is impossible to predict how a car tested by Global NCAP would fare under Latin NCAP protocol, without running additional tests. Vice-versa it is possible to approximately guess how much a car would score when assessed to Global NCAP's assessment protocol, by looking at the ODB test score (the difference in chest compression limits means the guess is not completely accurate). For reference, the Suzuki Baleno scored 12 points for frontal impact and the Yaris scored 11 (11.23 as specified by the older test). If evaluated to Global NCAP's assessment protocol both could score 4 stars, but would not be able to score 5 in any case (even if Suzuki had the knee modifiers removed) due to failing of the technical requirements of UN95 (and the failure of the Yaris' passenger-side seatbelt reminder). In any case this is not valid for India since the tests were not performed on cars sold in India.
  • Global NCAP's 2022 assessment protocol, though improved, will not be identical to Latin NCAP's current assessment protocol. It is loosely based on 2016-19 Latin NCAP protocol but there are still quite a few differences.
  • For reference, the Suzuki Baleno tested and assessed by IDIADA for Euro NCAP in 2016 scored combined 13.6 points for the side MDB and pole tests, emphasising the importance of side torso and head curtain airbags.

You would see same thing going on for Volkswagen and Skoda cars too ! Few of the cars are not tested by any competent authority yet we read in reviews and threads - superb build quality and Volkswagens safety standards.

Re: 2021 Toyota Yaris and Suzuki Baleno perform poorly in Latin NCAP

LATIN NCAP != GLOBAL NCAP

A sincere request to everyone. Look at the following results of 64 kmph Frontal offset test; the only standard test between the protocols.

2021 Toyota Yaris and Suzuki Baleno perform poorly in Latin NCAP-thar.jpg

2021 Toyota Yaris and Suzuki Baleno perform poorly in Latin NCAP-baleno.jpg

2021 Toyota Yaris and Suzuki Baleno perform poorly in Latin NCAP-tigor.jpg

Choose a car you'd buy solely based on these pictures. Click on the image to find out which one it is.

Go ahead and comment whatever you'd like to add to the discussion.

SPOILER ALERT

For mobile users who are not able to see the attachment names, it is the Thar, Baleno and Tigor. In that order.
