How do you use your ORVMs & mirrors?

While driving a car (RHD), for rear view we usually have:-

- right outside rear view mirror (ORVM)

- left outside rear view mirror (ORVM)

- rear view mirror, conventional one above the dash (RVM)

- rear view camera (while reversing)

Being old school, I would personally prefer to view the RVM first of all, during straight road drives and next, the right ORVM. And only if I am taking a left turn or sense some motor vehicle or other road user to the left will I view the left ORVM.

Both have their uses. Cant do without any of these.

ORVM for short range check - like when changing lanes, turns.

RVM for further away - like when planning for an overtake.

Reversing I use all.

All of them. I would even add Blind spot mirrors to the list. You can't take any chances with the kind of driving habits in India. 360 degree situational awareness is a must.

I had to live with a broken left side mirror on my bike for a week and boy was it a nightmare.

You could change it to Driver side ORVM & Co-driver side ORVM to have a common polling irrespective of LHD / RHD driving.

Can we have better explanation on need of this poll? What are we trying to understand?

re: How do you use your ORVMs & mirrors?

I use all of them - both side ORVMs as well as inner RVM.
Make it a point to look at all of them at regular intervals while driving but more focus on both side ORVMs.
As far as reversing is concerned, I use all of them.

re: How do you use your ORVMs & mirrors?

I use all three rearview mirrors. The IRVM the most. Next would be the Right ORVM and close third will be the left ORVM.

re: How do you use your ORVMs & mirrors?

I'm confused by the question, but I'm assuming you meant which one we use frequently.

I do check all the mirrors AND DRVM (reverse camera) when necessary.
  • We have people overtaking from left side, have to check left ORVM.
  • We have people overtaking us from right side, have to check right ORVM.
  • People behind us, IRVM. And if I feel rear view is hindered, I use DRVM as well.
Mirrors I continuously monitor is right side ORVM and IRVM. Left side ORVM is only if I have to move left for some reason.

re: How do you use your ORVMs & mirrors?

I don't think there is any option, all three rear view mirrors have to be used at frequent intervals. Only case where IRVM cannot be used is in loading vans or when the boot is overloaded and interfering with the line of vision. Several new cars are offering rear mounted cameras for that purpose.

Edit: I have voted for the 4th option, but it should be RVM and both ORVMs combo, not just the right ORVM. Also, the mirrors should be checked every 5 to 8 seconds.

re: How do you use your ORVMs & mirrors?

I don't think there needs to be an option to use any one. All need to be used in tandem for safe driving. I used to be quite uneasy driving my spark when there was no left ORVM.
Unacceptable for me to drive without any of the mirrors missing. Quite a ridiculous poll to be asking people to choose here.

More importantly, between ORVM and IRVM, which is more accurate in terms of distance between the car behind.

IRVM the vehicle much closer than the ORVM. And I know for ORVM 'Objects are closer than they appear' but does the IRVM show much more closer than actually the vehicle is?

re: How do you use your ORVMs & mirrors?

I have voted for the combo of rear view mirror + right ORVM, but typically I end up using all the options - rear + right ORVM + left ORVM + rear camera sometimes. This is for my Vento.

It has less to do with the car configuration/size etc. but more to do with avoiding ignorant or unaware passers-by/dogs/kids etc. who can appear out of nowhere, specially in residential areas.

Sometimes, I wish those reversing horns (thing of the past) with their nice music, actually helped in keeping the folks aware of a reversing car.

Careful, you don't want automobile companies to see that a certain majority people prefer right over left mirror and use this as an excuse to introduce subscription based ORVM options.

Something like:
Pay 5$/yr for Left ORVM

re: How do you use your ORVMs & mirrors?

Confused as to which option to vote

Being inclined towards driving in first lane (right most lane), I have a habit of checking Left ORVM first, followed by IRVM and then Right ORVM. While during reverse, I simply rely on ORVMs and parking camera with sensors.

Honestly, have never thought so deep while using ORVMs/IRVM, it is just instinct and in a fraction of seconds I rotate eyeballs and get a picture on what to do next or abort altogether.

Same.

I accidentally put my vote in the poll for RVM instead of RVM + OVRM combo. Didn't realise that's a choice.

This is not a justified question, opinion, poll or option at all. There has to be 360° awareness of a vehicle's surroundings by every single driver while driving, and the only way that can be achieved is by use of all the mirrors. A heavy vehicle driver, for example, will have multiple ORVMs on each side to minimise blind spots, and a good driver will habitually check each mirror (as well as the dashboard) in a quick scanning glance every few seconds, as BlackPearl mentioned...

To think that not checking each available mirror is even an option, or preferentially checking one mirror and ignoring the rest, is committing sacrilege in the books of safe driving, and should not have a place in the Road Safety section.
