Gujarat couple use sunroof to come out of drowning Mercedes, but eventually die

Thanks to Niraj Singh for sending this information in. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with other enthusiasts via this Team-BHP page!

Feel sad to share this bad news, but this should be brought to light as people need to understand that a free road means driving with more responsibility and not to taste thrills or check a car's capability.

A couple died as their Mercedes went out of control and dived into a pond. They were alive when their car crashed and even came out through the sunroof, but failed to get any help as the car sank with them. It seems neither of them knew how to swim and it's a pity that with so many people around, no one made any effort to save them.

Translation of the source article:
Quote:
A man and his wife were killed when their Mercedes car plunged into a lake near Ambapur village on the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar highway yesterday afternoon. A video showing Anand Modi and Fanny Modi drowning in the lake has surfaced. In the heart-breaking video of the two drowning, the couple got out of the sunroof of the car and sat on the vehicle and asked for help. Meanwhile, villagers shouted and asked them to go the rear of the vehicle, but both drowned along with the car.

On the Ambapur Highway between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, a Mercedes driver lost control and crashed into Ambapur Lake. As soon as the incident was reported, the residents of the area rushed to the spot and carried out a rescue operation. But both, the husband and wife, drowned in the car and died on the spot. Upon learning of the incident, the police rushed to the spot and conducted an investigation.

While the man's body was found, the search for wife's body continues.

After this tragedy, this young man has been identified as Anand Modi, who lives in Jivrajnagar in Shahibaug. Locals informed the fire brigade that the body of the youth has been found, but the search for the woman is on. The driver had gone to Palanpur according to the reports received and was returning to his home in Ahmedabad. On the way, the car (MH-04-EQ-2400) crashed into a lake on the Adalaj-Koba highway after jumping a bump in Tasalwa in Ambapur village.

Quite saddened to see that.

Don't know if the couple were familiar with the road or not, but it is always advisable to go slow and careful while traveling for first time on unknown roads because they can throw sudden surprises at us like the bump in this case.

Incidents like this show how much of a life skill knowing how to swim is. The car seems to be too far out from the shore, did it float till there or crash from a higher location?

This is such a sad sight to see. Rest in Peace.

The only thing I can say is that every one must learn to swim, in fact, it must be made mandatory. It looks like they could have made it if they knew how to swim, the current was not that strong.

Very Sad. Did no one from the crowd know how to swim? Strange

Re: Gujarat couple use sunroof to come out of drowning Mercedes, but eventually die

I don't wish to be judgmental though that's where I am going to end up. Folks on the shore had the time to take a video but not the time to jump in and try and save them. Trying to rescue a drowning person is itself fraught with risk of the saviour ending up drowning himself. But still -- from the video the car seems to be about 50 meters at the most from the near side shore.

Knowing how to swim is a double-edged sword.

If you look at page 3 of a newspaper, you will notice that close to 100% of drowning incidents involve young (mostly) males who have ventured into sea, river, lake, pond or waterfalls. All because they "know" how to swim. Those who do not know how to swim take all the precautions and don't take unnecessary risks.

Perhaps learning how to swim needs to accompanied by lessons on dangers of swimming in natural water bodies.

Now that's a good point. How did they end up in the middle of the lake?

Actually saving someone who is drowning is very difficult and dangerous (even for someone who knows swimming very well). As the drowning person will be panicked, he/she will grab you and drag you down in order to come up. Therefore unless someone is trained to rescue a drowning person, its better to extend a rope or something.

I would disagree with you, i could find a source that mentions 66% knew how to swim. But then swimming in a shallow pool is different than swimming in a deep unregulated water body. If one is trained and experienced enough swimming is not a big deal. Most of swimming deaths are due to over confidence or bad judgements like not understanding flow of water and depths. Sort of like how a noob driver can easily wreck a supercar or superbike because although they know how to drive but are not experienced enough to control something that has a lot more variables that can go wrong. Even in this case all they needed to know was how to float in a deep body of water. Taking precautions is unrelated i feel.

Extremely tragic.

A number of things running in my mind other than knowing swimming are...

1. Sunroof can be life savers
2. To the swimming experts and triathaloners of our forum: Could you suggest life saving tips for non swimmers.

This video recording behaviour has seriously become annoying.

I think there was some time for people to attempt a save. The locals would know how deep the water will be and could have atleast thrown some floatation objects at them.

I think even basic understanding of buoyancy can help people in floating / swimming. A simple jugaad as emptying a bottle to act as a floatation device would have helped. Easier said than done when you are actually in the situation.

It was not a river or canal so the flow would have not been a problem for the bystanders. Wish, they tried something, like a human chain of a few people.

Sad to see, absolutely Zero efforts.

Re: Gujarat couple use sunroof to come out of drowning Mercedes, but eventually die

I for one think it all happened quickly and harsh to blame for no efforts as they looked right in the middle and we don't have all the info. You can see how quickly the car dips in the end making the woman fall off.

As for how they reached there is curious too. Maybe the guy was speeding and reached that far after crashing from a bridge?

Absolutely! Sad to see two lives lost this way. Loss for the immediate family and a flash news for the news channels
