Hyundai Mobis develops world’s first sunroof airbag system

Hyundai Mobis, the component manufacturer part of the South Korean automotive giant Hyundai Motor Group, has developed the world's first airbag system for sunroofs.

The sunroof airbag is similar to that of a curtain airbag in most cars which protects the occupants from side impact. When vehicular impact and rollover results in change in rotation angle, the sensor of the airbag detects this change and deploys the sunroof airbag in 0.08 seconds. This functions as an impact absorbent and prevents the occupants from being thrown out through the sunroof during vehicle rollover.

Quote:
Manufacturing of the airbag is expected to become possible in about two years.

We unveiled the airbag system at a vehicle safety forum that took place in the United States in June this year and local traffic safety organizations and many in the industry showed much interest in it,” said Hyundai Mobis, adding, “We will solidify our presence as a leading advanced airbag supplier by incorporating the system into various types of vehicles such as premium SUVs.”

Refreshing to see a safety innovation from South Korea! Shows how Hyundai has matured .

Guessing these are occupants who haven't buckled up? How would anyone wearing his seatbelt be thrown out of the sunroof?

Re: Hyundai Mobis develops world’s first sunroof airbag system

Good to see some safety innovation coming from South Korea. There has been some bad rep for Hyundai and Kia for sunroof quality issues. This maybe a good way to show progress on that.
Also, what would happen if the sunroof shatters (a higher than average rate prevalent issue with Kia and Hyundai cars) - https://www.consumerreports.org/car-...anger-overhead

From the link - CR’s analysis of the available government and industry sunroof failure data suggests that the problem is spread across the industry but is more prevalent in some brands—notably Kia and Hyundai—than their overall market share would indicate.
