Exactly and this is going to be the same case to a certain extent with the VAG Group post their Emission scandal.

Re: Quality issue with Takata airbags. Honda, Toyota, Nissan, GM, BMW, Subaru impacted

Honda Motor will recall an additional 20 million Takata-made airbags globally, a newspaper said today, in a widening scandal that has led to the biggest auto recall in US history.

Tokyo-based auto parts giant Takata is struggling to deal with a defect that can send metal and plastic shrapnel from the inflator canister hurtling toward drivers and passengers when an airbag is deployed.

The defect has been blamed for grisly injuries that have in some cases proved fatal.

Honda, along with other automakers, has already been ordered by US authorities to recall all units that do not contain a desiccant that keeps explosives in airbags from deteriorating.

The Japanese automaker now plans to widen areas for the recall to Asia, Oceania, Latin America and Europe, which will force the firm to recall another 20 million airbags or more globally, bringing the total number to more than 50 million, the Nikkei daily said.

The additional cost is estimated at 200 billion yen (USD 1.87 billion), the business newspaper said, adding that the latest move by the biggest buyer of Takata air bags may prompt other automakers to follow suit.

Immediate confirmation of the news report was not available.

Last Wednesday, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ordered Takata to recall between 35 and 40 million more airbags installed in US cars.

That is on top of the 50 million already recalled globally, including about 29 million in the United States, making it by far the biggest auto recall in US history.

Also Wednesday, Honda announced two more people in Malaysia had died in accidents linked to Takata-made airbags. Most deaths have been in the US.

Re: Quality issue with Takata airbags. Honda, Toyota, Nissan, GM, BMW, Subaru impacted

Takata says latest U.S. recall investigative, but unclear who will pay costs

Japan's Takata Corp. declared nearly 14 million airbag inflators defective as part of an expanded U.S. recall, but it said it considered the recall investigative, leaving the thorny question of cost-sharing with automakers unresolved.

The question of just how much Takata will have to pay for a deepening crisis over potentially deadly airbags has been hanging heavily over the company, with management saying that can be worked out only when there is clarity on the root cause of the problem.

Until now, automakers have launched what are called investigative recalls, where they collect parts to determine the reasons for the defects. Under such recalls, automakers bear most of the burden, although Takata is widely expected to shoulder more.

The airbags have the potential to inflate violently, spraying metal shrapnel in the vehicle and have been blamed for 13 deaths and more than 100 injuries, mainly in the United States.

The company's woes worsened this month with U.S. authorities announcing a recall of up to 40 million more of the company's airbags, on top of the more than 50 million that have already been recalled globally.

Monday's notice to remove 14 million inflators is the first part of the expanded recall.

Takata spokesman Toyohiro Hishikawa said that the company considers the newly announced recall investigative and reiterated the company 's stance that it is waiting until a study it commissioned presents its conclusions in the summer.

But Hishikawa added the company "generally agrees" with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's assessment that a combination of time, environmental moisture and fluctuating high temperatures contribute to the degradation of the ammonium nitrate propellant in the inflators.

"But we can't say that our assessments match NHTSA's 100 percent because we have yet to make our own conclusions," he said.

If Takata was found to be solely responsible for the problem, it could face a bill of more than $9 billion in recall costs, based on a rough calculation that each replacement kit costs around $100.

Sources have said the company has begun looking for a financial backer to help with the recall costs.

Takata also faces lawsuits and on Friday, Hawaii became the first U.S. state to sue the auto supplier, accusing it and Honda Motor Co. of covering up the problem and demanding $10,000 in compensation for every affected car.

Takata declined to comment on the Hawaii lawsuit. Honda also declined to comment, saying it had not be served with the lawsuit.

On another note, if the Takata issue impacted players like Nissan, GM, Toyota then why only Honda has issued the recall (& a massive one) in India? Or have I missed something?

Toyota expands Takata airbag recall by 1.6 million vehicles

In total, Toyota has 4.73 million vehicles worldwide affected by Takata airbag inflators.

The expansion follows in the footsteps of Takata’s announcement earlier this month, where it said another 35 million to 40 million airbag inflators are defective and existing recalls would expand accordingly in the following weeks.

On the Toyota side, the expansion includes many (but not all) Corolla and Matrix compacts from 2009 to 2011, as well as the 2006 to 2011 Yaris, the 2010 to 2011 4Runner and the 2011 Sienna. The 2008 to 2011 Scion xB is also affected, along with the 2007 to 2011 Lexus ES, the 2010 to 2011 GX and the 2006 to 2011 IS. Owners can check to see if their Toyota is affected right here.

This expansion brings the total of Toyotas affected by defective Takata airbag inflators to 4.73 million vehicles worldwide, while 17 automakers altogether have recalled Takata inflators.

Malaysian woman dies after airbag ruptures in accident

Quote:
A Malaysian woman has died after the airbag in her Honda City ruptured in a minor collision, a safety official said Monday.

The incident Sunday came days after Honda Malaysia announced an additional recall of more than 145,000 vehicles to replace defective front passenger airbag inflators.

Fire and rescue official Rosdi Hainan said the steering-wheel airbag had ruptured when he arrived at the site of the accident, and the victim was bleeding from her chest.

Rosdi said the woman died a short time later. Honda officials could not be immediately reached for comment.

There has been a massive recall involving millions of vehicles around the world because of faulty inflator and propellant devices that may deploy improperly in an accident, shooting out metal fragments that can injure or kill.

Worldwide, 11 known deaths and more than 100 injuries have been blamed on exploding Takata-made airbag inflators.

In November last year, a 43-year-old pregnant Malaysian housewife was killed after a collision activated the airbag in her Honda.

Honda also confirmed two other deaths that are linked to airbag issues in April and May this year.
One more instance of improper inflation.

This is so frightening. The very devices that are supposed to protect you, kill you even in a minor collision!

Suzuki , Hyundai and Ford surprisingly are not mentioned in this list. Do we have an idea of who their supplier is?

Re: Quality issue with Takata airbags. Honda, Toyota, Nissan, GM, BMW, Subaru impacted

We all very well know about what has been going on with the Takata Airbags from the past few years and so has the company too.

Takata Airbags company has filled itself with many lawsuits for the faulty manufacturing of airbags and has presently filed for bankruptcy protection in Tokyo and the U.S. Takata confirmed that most of its assets will be bought for about $1.6 billion by rival Key Safety Systems, based in suburban Detroit.

Takata won't shut its operations but would be used as replacement parts for the present cars & recalls. The main trouble arises when the ammonium nitrate used by takata in airbags deteriorate faster when exposed to hot and humid air blowing a metal canister.

It looks like, even the replacement airbags are 'faulty'? All the car manufacturers knew this, but still went ahead and fitted them?
Now, the car manufacturers must be held responsible for this?

Ford agrees to $299.1 million U.S. Takata air bag settlement

Another one from the Takata airbags saga.
Reuters

This time it's Ford. This time, good and proper.
After the recall of 2900 Rangers in January this year, this one covers "at least 6 million vehicles".

Quote:
Ford said in a statement it remains "focused on working with our customers to get their vehicles repaired."

The settlement also covers out-of-pocket costs, including lost wages and child care costs, Ford owners may face, or already incurred, to get vehicles repaired. Under the settlement, Ford will also provide free rental or loaner vehicles to owners of recalled vehicles who are awaiting repairs when parts are not available.
