All car makers are actually integrators, buying components from maybe a hundred or more vendors. So what has happened is not totally unexpected. Only their QC ensures that the basic product is good. Even here just in time etc. often leave the QC almost totally to the vendor.

An accident that left a Georgia woman blind in one eye and a subsequent lawsuit led to General Motors Co's recall of about 33,000 Chevrolet Cruze sedans in North America for potentially defective air bags made by Takata Corp.

The lawsuit by Brandi Owens, filed in late April in federal court in Atlanta against GM and Takata, claims her car and driver-side air bag were "defective and unreasonably dangerous," citing a problem that has dogged Takata for several years - air bag inflators that explode with too much force. More than 10.5 million vehicles with Takata air bags have been recalled globally.

This is just, another brick in the wall.

But good to hear them recalling all impacted vehicles. Even though they are in much bigger trouble. The new GM CEO seems to be more promising when it comes to these kind of quality issues.

Honda Cars India Ltd. (HCIL) has recalled 1,085 units of the Accord sedan and 252 units of the CR-V manufactured in the year 2003 and 1 unit of the CR-V manufactured in 2002 to carry out replacement of their passenger side airbag inflators.

The very purpose of purchasing a car variant that has airbags (at least in the Indian context) is to have a bit of peace of mind, and this just has the opposite effect.

I was considering buying the Chevy cruze. But read about recall of the vehicle in north america due to faulty airbags and another issue of possible fire through liquids trapped in the engine compartment.
Any idea if this issue persists in the india models

The issue was primarily for the cars delivered in US due to an outsourced vendor providing those faulty parts. There is no recall for indian cheverolet Cruze except for Tavera after which I believe the production stopped.

Honda's new recall - after a death in Malaysia is tied to the use of Takata airbags.

As scrutiny intensified from lawmakers and federal prosecutors over defective airbags made by the Takata Corporation, Honda confirmed on Thursday that a driver of one of its cars had died after a Takata airbag exploded. It was the fifth death linked to the defect.

The driver was pregnant when she was killed on July 27 in Malaysia, a Honda spokesman in Kuala Lumpur said on Friday. Her unborn baby also died.

Corporate greed knows no boundary.

Today it is Takata who tried to bury down a known issue. The other day it was GM. Not sure who will be the next.

In another thread there is long discussion going on safety and inclusion of ABS/Airbags etc. as standard equipment in India. These news dent the argument for such requirements and also confidence of people generally on automobile manufacturers
