Kerala: Speed limit on highways and 4-lane roads revised

Kerala: Speed limit on highways and 4-lane roads revised-speed.jpg
Quote:
Kochi: The government on Friday revised the upper speed limit of all vehicles on highways and four-lane roads. As per the order, the speed limit on city roads will be 45 km/hr as against 35 km/hr earlier.

The revision in speed limits on state roads comes after almost 15 years. The order, which came into force on Friday itself, states that the upper speed limit for cars has gone up from 70 km/hr to 85 km/hr on highways and 90 km/hr on four-lane roads.

This is good. Was waiting to hear this for a long time. A few drives planned and this is the perfect time for them to revise the speed limit.
And I hope this is true. Cant blindly trust TOI.

Re: Kerala: Speed limit on highways and 4-lane roads revised

Finally, some common sense from our RTO guys. 90 kph speed limit is much more tolerable on the open road.

I hope people will not take advantage of this and tear about rashly, if there a huge number of crashes happening after the speed limit raise, they might take it back to the old speeds again, citing safety reasons.

Welcome change in the law to finally recognize that 50kmph isn't overspeeding on a dual carriageway. This being election season, I expect someone to start agitating against privileges for the bourgeois elite.

Re: Kerala: Speed limit on highways and 4-lane roads revised

This is great! That TOI article is quoting transport commissioner Rishi Raj Singh, so should be true.

Quote:
“We had given a proposal to the state government to revise the speed limits two years ago. The government issued the orders today,’’ transport commissioner Rishi Raj Singh said.

Motor vehicles department officials said motorists caught speeding on CCTV cameras would be fined only if they violated the revised speed limits. The department has installed CCTVs along the Cherthala-Kasaragod
stretch on the national highway.

Senior deputy transport commissioner P K Stephan said the proposal to increase the speed limits was made in view of the improved road conditions.

Re: Kerala: Speed limit on highways and 4-lane roads revised

Thank RTO / Government and God! 85 kmph is quite a sensible speed on Kerala roads! And the better part is, you are still in the "good FE" speed limit too. Frankly, there are NOT many roads (in Kerala) where we can go beyond 90 and still be peaceful.

So, hope they start changing the sign-boards soon. Without that, the cops might just say, 'can't you see the board?'

It seems the new speed limits have not been updated in MVD Kerala Site.

Re: Kerala: Speed limit on highways and 4-lane roads revised

Considering the vehicle density and the road conditions in kerala 85 and 90 kmph looks like a sensible benchmark . By the way does anyone know if the speed guns have been recalibrated with immediate effect ? or is it just a news item that came in.

Re: Kerala: Speed limit on highways and 4-lane roads revised

I am bit confused, the change in speed limits is published only by Times of India. The news can be confirmed only after a few more popular news papers publish the same. That being said if the news of 85 km/hr is true then I can forget the speed cameras during my weekend drives

This is good news. However, did not find this news in any Malayalam newspaper or TV news. How are the public supposed to know about this?
