According to Toyota , there is some sort of a sensor which needs to be triggered for air bags to deploy . In this case , it never happened and hence no airbags.

Didn't you ask Toyota that if the sensors don't get 'triggered' in this situation, then when are they supposed to deploy the airbags?:Frustrati

^^ I was not there , but this is what they told when asked about it . Anyway , its an old incident . I have read on T-Bhp about air bags not deploying on a lot of such situations . This could be one of them . What matters is no one was seriously hurt.

Got this on Facebook. Don't know if its appropriate to post over here.

Mods please move if not appropriate thread.

The Message Reads - " My 18 years old son died becasue he was not wearing helmet. please wear helmet and inspire others "

Agree and feel sad for the father here. But him getting this painted on the rear windscreen isn't a very good idea either!

With utmost respect to the father, I believe its a very bold way to advice people for wearing helmets. At the same time such quotes also lead to unwanted attention.

Could the deaths have been averted if they wore seatbelts?

Yes, i also agree that it is not a good idea to paint on rear windscreen.

Perhaps the sorrow of losing his son in road accident might have prompted him to take such a step.

With due respect to others I personally have seen some cars getting "Shlokas" & "Phrases" printed with radium on whole rear windscreen which is a major distraction while driving and at night time the radium glows and its reflection to some extent can distract you while driving.

I am not against such things but a properly framed one liner at the top of the windscreen can convey our message :)

Yeah the sensors don't function when the vehicle goes underneath. The sensor is usually placed behind the front impact beam which you can see from pics is pretty much intact. That's the reason trucks now have the side beam and the rear bar as well.

It perhaps is a measure to avoid human-hurt to a extent during a mishap. Wearing a seat belt is mandatory in India and definitely there are ample examples wherein the seat belts turned out to be a savior.

The 'intact' sensor in the mangled Innova is quite clearly visible in the snap which has the gentleman in a striped T shirt standing in front of the vehicle.. See above the chassis cross member and there is a sub frame cross support. the sensor is dangling right in the centre of this support, there are two wires coming from within and hanging just above the trapezoid shaped frame. If you enlarge the picture you can see one of the wires ends in a flat balloon shaped thing pointing towards the right. That is the sensor cover, the sensor itself is mounted within.

It is a good idea Saket, however cost of the sensors and its fail safe circuitry is what makes it expensive to install multiple units

Thanks Khoj for drawing the attention of the readers to this fact with respect to the picture. However, I was thinking that since most of the trucks in India don't have proper bars at rear & sides, it would not be a bad idea to put the sensors at a few more places which can enable the air bags to deploy in cases like these. It can well be the difference between life & death in such impacts.

Saket

Not really. Airbags are known as supplementary restraint system (SRS). The seat belts are the primary. The air bags are like the last option to reduce injury. Mind you airbags also cause some mild injury since it is an explosive charge. You can't have the airbags going off for minor accidents.

Yes, and building on the above, they are also expensive to re-instate after they have deployed.

Aren't these two different cars? One's an Indica and the other a Indigo eCS.

Two separate incidents?
