Heard the news that a bus had fallen down from the Gemini flyover in chennai this afternoon injuring atleast 40 people. One of my family member called to inform the same and also it was confirmed in NDTV live.

Hope there is no major risk of life's and prayer for the injured souls to recover quick. This raises the question on when is the public transport officials get serious about safety and teach drivers to follow rules

Not automatically, no, but at slow speeds the consequences are less

Bad drivers are the prime cause of accidents.

Yes, it is good to have speed and power in reserve, but please remember that every time speed gets us out of trouble it was us that got into that trouble in the first place.

I'm old. I don't want to hear the youthful shrieks of protest at this. Instead, please note that there are over 11,000 posts in this thread

I was about to go that way and had a call from Wife not to. Now I have to go a long way around. That is a small personal nuisance: sympathy to the injured.

Coverage from The Hindu. In this pic they have the bus the right way up.

Re: Bus falls over from Gemini Flyover - Chennai

Very disturbing news.

For the bus to have been out of control, overturned and then fallen off the flyover, just imagine the speed it must be driven at.

That and the state of almost all buses in Chennai, is pure recipe for such incidents.

Re: Bus falls over from Gemini Flyover - Chennai

This Gemini flyover has always been giving me a thought or two about the way vehicles negotiate this curve. Two wheelers, sometimes tend to scrape their stands when the riders expose their heroic stunts on wheels. This is a behemoth of a machine and I wonder if there were any serious casualities and am sure that there are, seeing that this bus had turned turtle.Pray that not one life is lost due to rash, negligent, reckless way of maintaining and manning vehicles. Let the rusty vehicles Rest In Pieces while the ones with checked and qualified safety standards, with safe drivers on them, alone travel in these roads.

Re: Bus falls over from Gemini Flyover - Chennai

Bus drivers in Chennai have absolutely no respect for rules. No one - including traffic police - stops them. They don't fear any fine or any disciplinary action for breaking traffic laws.

Everyday I drive, I pray that there's no bus behind me when a traffic signal turns yellow; because the bus driver will ram over me trying to beat the red. Very very dangerous.

Re: Bus falls over from Gemini Flyover - Chennai

Some of these MTC buses are very very poorly maintained and that is an understatement. This flyover has been in existence from 1974 and this curve is for taking a right from Anna Salai into N.H.Road. I am sure it cannot be entirely the driver's fault. Hope there are no serious injuries or casualties.

P.S. Just read Patchyboy's post.... Cellphone ??? The passengers should have grabbed that out of his hand.

OMGCellphone to hellphone-Let the voice at the other end speak to the ghosts if there is any loss of life. Both the driver and the caller at the other end should be punished severely.

That surely is a killer combination. Hope no one loses their life due this stupidity of the driver.

Re: Bus falls over from Gemini Flyover - Chennai

For whoever's wondering: Chennai Traffic Police's Facebook update says that the bus has been removed (I guess, implying that the traffic flow is back to normal in that area)

Firstpost has a set of pictures:

Images: Bus falls off flyover in Chennai, 30 injured | Firstpost

This is the 360-degree loop from westbound Mount Road to northbound Nungambakkam High Road/westbound GN Chetty Road, isn't it? That is a deadly curve. I hope they take strict action against the driver.
