Minister drives bus, hits auto

..and the police do not register a case since the damage was minor and matters were "settled"

err what about breaking the law?

^^ Didn't you know that Govt. officials are always above the law, Ajmat? :)

Licence? What licence?

Sonia (35) died for no fault of hers though. An over-speeding car, driven by 46-year-old AIIMS employee Mohan Kumar, ploughed into her car's rear on August Kranti Marg at 1.45am, killing her.

Kumar also died as his car, a Swift Dzire, spun out of the road. His son, sitting next to him, survived but suffered injuries.

Mohan Kumar, a senior technical assistant in the rotary cancer department at AIIMS, was travelling with his 16-year-old son Ajay in the Swift Dzire.

At around 1.45am, Ramesh Kumar, who was driving the Honda City, took a left turn near the Uday Park bus stand traffic signal to join the August Kranti Marg.

The car had barely gone a few metres on the August Kranti Marg when the Swift Dzire rammed it from the back. Both cars spun out of control, hit dividers and came to a stop on opposite sides of the road.

The noise that followed the impact was so loud that the entire neighbourhood woke up.

damn those images are terrible. The dzire must have plowed into the city without braking to damage it SO badly. There's no way Sonia could have survived this accident. RIP.

/the micra's under seat bar should hopefully make the car a bit safer than this city turned out to be.

oh!! What has become of the city!! Real sad.
I was wondering after reading the news, if the impact was so severe, or she died of trauma, but looking at the pics, she had no chance.
Don't think seat belt would have helped here.
God give strength to the family, this is such a terrible loss!

Just got to know from this article that Mrs Sonia is actor Fardeen Khan's half-sister: Fardeen Khan's kin killed in south Delhi car crash - The Times of India

Its so shocking! Is there any chance that the City braked hard before or just after the impact? A freely rolling object would not (or is it should not) take that much of a damage unless the speed of the Dzire is too high(much greater than the reported 120 KMPH, my assumption).

My point is- if the vehicles are moving in same direction and nothing to stop the momentum transfer (from the fast moving vehicle to the slow moving one) how could that Swift do so much damage to the City?

The city just turned so it could not be doing more than 20 KMPH and if the Dzire indeed was doing 120 KMPH as per the report, considering relative velocity of 100 KMPH, would a stationary (and unrestrained) City rear ended by a Swift at 100 KMPH suffer this much of damage?

Assuming that the City driver indeed braked hard after the impact, would there be lesser damage had he not braked at all?

P.S: I am sad at the lives lost, please do not assume that I am disrespecting anyone by trying to analyse.

The Dzire driver is surely guilty of overspeeding. Looking at the damage to the City, there is no way he was within the speed limits.
But some fault lies with the City driver as well. I dont think he checked for traffic on his right before completing that left turn.

OMG, City has shrunk to a hatch-back size. How can Dzire, a hatchback with a boot, damage a proper sedan to this extent? I shudder to think of a City being rear-ended by a bus/truck then. Shouldn't Honda beef up rear section?

Yes .Something that we see almost every day in Bangalore .

And,the Swift with those skinny tires would have been doing very high speeds and there was no way that this car could stop unless it hit the City .

MUL used to give 155 tires on the Esteem and now these 165 tires on the Swift ! All for FE

Compared to Dzire, the damage to City's rear is catastrophic even though the rear is supposedly the strongest part of a sedan. I am skeptical of City's crash worthiness, atleast from the rear.

Unless the Swift Dzire ploughed into the Honda City at some triple digit speeds, there was no way a sedan could have got shortened to that extent. We have seen so many accident pics with the cabin of the car intact despite a huge impact but in case of the City, the cabin seems to have lost all integrity from the rear.

You can see the pictures of the Dzire. It has suffered relatively much lesser damage even though it was the front.

The city has shrunk half in size from the impact and really scares the hell out of me. Also it's shocking to see the damage on City to be so catastrophic , while the impact and damage being low on the Dzire. For a moment i thought that the City was rear ended by a truck. Car manufacturers should look at safety and efficiency together. As loosing a life is more painful than spending a few 100 more on fuel cost.

That's possibly because all cars designed to be sold in Europe (or US) are designed to withstand high speed front impacts. Euro NCAP has ratings for rear impact crashes, but I think they are not taken as seriously as front impact, and the final rating does not depend on rear impact crashes. So the manufacturers can make a car that's officially safe, but may fail in untested scenarios.

This could be one explanation as to why Honda City (whose hatchback version has pretty good Euro NCAP ratings) could not withstand such an impact.
