Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

It’s a very sad day for the family and for auto enthusiasts alike. I say this because, in an interview, a relative of the owner mentions that the victim was very proud of Volvo’s success in safety over the decades. Trusting this reputation, he purchased the car just two months ago, expecting it to protect his family. Unfortunately, destiny had other plans. I hope the family finds peace in this difficult time.

Road safety in India has been facing a serious crisis due to a lack of basic infrastructure, negligence, and the persistent corruption and ignorance of government officials over the years. Unfortunately, this situation has only worsened in recent times.

While a significant number of new roads are being constructed every day, what about the maintenance and infrastructure improvements of existing ones? Many older highways lack essential safety features such as crash barriers and adequate lighting, making them dangerous for commuters.

Truck overloading, overspeeding, and poor lane discipline further exacerbate the problem. These issues must be taken seriously because with increasing infrastructure comes the greater responsibility of maintaining and upgrading the older network to meet safety standards.

Being an automotive community, Team-BHP has a platform and a voice that can highlight the inefficiencies of the government in ensuring road safety. While driver responsibility is also a factor, at least in this case, the tragedy could have been avoided with better infrastructure and accountability.

Thank you for reading, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this.

Update to this: Apparently the Kia Seltos guy came to the police station at night. It seems he had to leave abruptly because his father was unwell and his phone got switched off. I received a call from the police station in the afternoon, asking to come to the PS and come to a mutual understanding. I had gome to the PS with my father. We had asked for a compensation of 25k, which was very nominal for the damages caused to my car. Heck I am pretty sure it will cost much more than that to get my car back into shape. The party was offering 5k initially and then quoted 7k as their last. On top.of this there was a lot of back and forth convos that happened in which the party was stating all reasons possible for not having money. Me and my father were fed up at this point. We did not want to become cheap by accepting their measely compensation despite of the numerous reasons they stated for not being able to pay. We took back the case, and denied taking any compensation. I asked the police officer to check the car's numberplate as it was running with a fake number.

I have my end sem exams from tomorrow, and all of my precious preparation time went to waste. This incident has left me depressed for half a day. Now I am fine, but there was a royal waste of time that happened to me.

And my car, I am not sure what repairs have to be done. I am planning on getting only the bonnet fixed for now. The car's registration will expire in 4-5 months, and I will have to see what can be done after that.

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Saw the collision between two motorcycles near Hirisave while I was on the way to Hassan around 2 pm.

I was shocked to see the mangled remains of the two motorcycles.

Not sure how this accident might have happened. I could see debris of passion motorcycle scattered all over, heck even the seat was thrown out.

I overheard the bystanders conversation that passion pro rider died on spot. RIP to the lost soul, if it was true :(

The Other motorcycle looks like the BMW 1300 GS Option 719.

Really sad.

It's a pretty unfortunate ordeal you're going through. Really sorry to hear about it. Here's hoping the car becomes good as new asap. All the best for your exams.

In a case like this where the roof collapses, it is mostly the pillars which take the brunt and they are common for both (with or without sunroof). In case of smaller object falling (or the car falling upside down on a smaller hard surface) in the middle of the roof, there would be some difference in the way they protect. Super structure which is what gives strength to the shell is more or less the same.

Driving with temp plates is a menace in Hyd. I wonder why they do not have permanent plates from the time the car leaves the showroom. Majority of states can do that, not sure why it is not followed here.

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

The Volvo and Truck accident is a tragic reminder of the dangers of the road. A fully loaded container truck can weigh up to 40 tons, easily crushing a car or SUV. Even an empty one (approx. weight of 3 - 4 tons) is good enough to cause havoc.

This accident highlights the importance of advanced heavy vehicle driver training and emergency manoeuvre training. We must also hold drivers accountable for their actions and ensure that they face the full consequences of their negligence.

It’s heart-wrenching to see tragedies like these, where an entire family is lost in mere seconds. Watching the video, it’s easy to wonder about alternate scenarios—if only the Volvo driver had noticed the out-of-control truck earlier and swerved left, perhaps the impact could have been minimized. But hindsight, while powerful, offers no solace in such moments. The reality remains devastating, and incidents like these serve as stark reminders of how fragile life is.

Rather than dwell on what could have been, we must advocate for stricter safety measures, better road awareness, and improved infrastructure to prevent such tragedies. These stories shouldn’t be recurring headlines. It’s deeply saddening, and the sense of helplessness only makes it harder to accept. Lives lost, especially families, leave a void that words can’t fill.

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

In a country where not only human is unsafe on the roads, even the poor animals have to watch out for their own kind.

Cows come to rescue their calf:

I wonder how such people get the license! How insensitive one has to be to fail to realise that they have hit something/someone that’s getting dragged along!

When will the authorities wake up to bring-in stringent driving rules in our country? (Hint: probably not in our lifetime.)

There were times when I used to enjoy driving even within the city. Nowadays, it’s just a test of patience and looking out for idiots to keep myself safe.

Had passed by this accident spot a few minutes after this happened. The passion pro had a family — wife and kid. The father died on the spot, apparently.

The BMW rider had a deep cut on this face. Not sure how that was caused; he had a good helmet.

One local guy was threating all the bikers (the ones with big bikes and with full gear and luggage) passing by saying 'you people are causing such issues'

It’s a shorter video. I think it’s clear he was driving on the correct side and has gone on to the wrong side on account of some incident. It seems like the blue car that speeds away later toward the left may have slowed down unnaturally causing the truck to brake / lose control and in turn causing it to jump the median.

That’s really sad to read about the loss of life. Might even be the first major accident in India of the 1300 GS. That’s unmistakably the Tramuntana Option 719 edition.

Sir, earlier days, though the roads were single lane and potholed, there were fewer vehicles on the road and they were much less powerful too.

I remember in 2002, when I purchased the just released Bajaj Pulsar 180, the max speed it could achieve was about 105-110 Kmph and other motorcycles did much less top speed and all rode at 70 Kmph on highways as it was considered the optimum speed. The roads were single and bad and hence the speed was restricted too.

Then, not many could afford a vehicle..A car was a luxury. Even a two wheeler was difficult to buy. So, less people purchased private vehicles and depended on public transport. People were civilized and courteous and behaved decent on the road.

Two decades since then, times have changed.

Today, we have 4/6 lane highways almost everywhere. The roads are wide, smooth and well laid. Then the vehicles have gotten more powerful. Imagine the premier Padmini/ Ambassador/ Maruti 800 against today's cars. Today, the cars are way much more powerful with all gizmos.

Over that, buying a vehicle today is much more easier than it ever was. I heard banks give 90% loan on OTR price. Getting a DL is easy too as money talks louder than ever before.

Now, a powerful vehicle and a 4/6 lane smooth highway is a deadly combination. And add to that the younger generation has access to it with so much ease. So, you have all the ingredients for a disaster.

I was taught driving by my grandfather about 50 years ago and I still remember and follow his advice as it's drilled into my head. Simple things like:
- Use your indicator and look out for any vehicle coming from behind before joining the road from standstill,
- Never stop or park on the curve of a road (always stop /park on a straight stretch with atleast 50-75 mtr visibility on both sides and get off the road completely),
- Use turn indicator much earlier (about 100-150 mtr) before turning and not at the time of turning. Even then, check in the RVM for approaching vehicles from behind.,
- Set the IRVM & ORVM properly before moving the car.
- If someone slows down ahead, you slow down too instead of overtaking. There must be a reason for the other driver to slow down, right?
- Do not drive beyond mandated speed limits and in any case within our capabilities.
- Practice panic braking
- Situational awareness and being mindful of the surroundings all the time.

..And many more. And such advices were drilled into our head that it's muscle memory now.

Today, one just purchases a new car and goes ballistic on the road, drunken driving is another huge menace. Road rage has increased exponentially and gone through the roof.

Times have changed from sensible defensive driving to reckless offensive driving. I don't see any solution here. The basic / fundamental education is missing. No one is conversant with road rules, the right and wrong, the correct and incorrect ways of doing things on road (an example is the incorrect usage of right indicator instead of left indicator while allowing a vehicle to overtake)

The best thing one can do, is to drive defensive, drive within the road rules and regulations, stay alert and be mindful and finally, a prayer on the lips.

I agree that standardised automated driving testing tracks should be setup for licensing.

But I think first question that comes in place that what are animals doing on roads? Despite the fact that newspapers are repeatedly covering the issue, where's authority sleeping?

Hit-and-run accident captured on CCTV. Location reported to be Hingoli, Maharashtra. The car crashes into a few roadside stalls; trampling over one person, dragging him by the wheels and ultimately fleeing the scene. The victim is reportedly serious and currently in the ICU. The vehicle seems to be a Volkswagen Vento.
