An out of control swift rear ending & lifting a parked fortuner

Imagine the frustration of the Fortuner's owner. The car is not safe, even in his own gated compound!

It is the duty of the heavy vehicle to take care at such junctions. In this case, there was movement into this space visible to the truck driver. He should have been more careful.

Regarding the Indica, he should have honked and cleared the way. It appears that he was fooling around in the high risk zone.

Not sure if the trucker could have done anything in this situation. No matter, as a car driver trying to merge onto a lane cutting across a truck, I would have waited and not risked such a maneuver.

But hate driving on such highways where such road work is going on with diversions thrown about.

TOI reported that the truck driver died but also an incorrect report that the truck overturned after after hitting the median. Seeing the way it turned, I presume that it was not a full tank, resulting in excess shift in centre of gravity due to lateral sloshing.

Thank God!. This car was not on the High Speed Lane or on the Middle Lane. The instant flames sends shock waves. Are our High Speed Lanes, never a safe track? Prone to Flying cars from the opposite lane, Splashing sludge on a raining day, Crossing Cattle from behind the bushes (Not just cattle even Two wheelers of the land), loads on the roads from overloaded trucks, and now burning spirits :Shockked:

Were you in car? Who ever was in the car had the luckiest of escapes. That truck is not a petroleum tanker, it was either acid or industrial fluids. (Edit - TOI says Spirit) Good guess eh!

Who ever goes through such a unavoidable situation should not stop right over the flame/fluid. Just drive out of that situation, wheels will be on fire agreed, try to park safely well ahead and get away from the car and hope your car does not burn down. Very scary situation indeed.

Tankers have baffles inside them - transverse and longitudinal , precisely to minimize weight shifting due to sloshing from pitch and roll.
My guess is that two things combined into a deadly combination causing overturn :
1. Pretty fast downhill so enough momemtum
2. Sudden steering input to switch to left lane in the middle of a downhill lefthander curve
1 and 2 created an effective turning moment that was forward and outward of the curve

The location of accident is Melumalai, between Shoolagiri and Krishnagiri.

There is a place in the same highway which is famous for frequent accidents- Thoppur, which is a good 100kms away.

What is common between Thoppur and Melumalai is the terrain. Vehicles come downhill in a 6 lane highway in high gears or worse, with ignition off.

There is a separate TeamBHP thread analysing the cause of Thoppur ghats accidents.

The truck overturning apart, the driving of the recording vehicle itself is quite risky. Fast lane changes and overtakings from left etc.

No, it wasn't me. I just got the video forwarded.

As per news, tyre burts caused below accident. Few people lost lives, looks horrifying.

One of the overtakes was from the left shoulder, the "n+1-st" lane in an n-lane highway. I am not sure why people take so much risk when they are behind the wheel.

RIP.

It’s a classic example of Target Fixation and a general tendency to swerve and avoid an obstacle vs. braking. The Ertiga/XL6 went and crashed into something that was totally avoidable.

We can see that the vehicle was on the fast lane and veers straight into the oncoming car. It’s important to have your eyes on the “gap” in the road always, especially on highways. And slow down if you see any obstacle at front instead of trying to swerve and avoid.

Or perhaps the tanker had 5-6 fully partioned compartments, and the liquid was loaded only in the last 1-2 compartments.

One of the news report mentioned that the Ertiga on the wrong side had a flat tyre and intentionally there (probably trying to park or find a shortcut). Obvious recipe for disaster. Does not seem like a tyre burst and median jumping case.

I will blame the indica here, few seconds of patience is all what he needed. Trucks and large vehicles have multiple blind spots. As a responsible driver, the cab should have let the truck go first.
