Perhaps the thumb rule needs to be - two car lengths when following a car, two bus lengths when following a bus, two articulated truck lengths when following an articulated truck...

Then I have to start from Kanyakumari
The moment we leave just a scooter distance from the vehicle in front, an opportunist car driver finds it suitable enough to nosedive in it.

I always do this (and more - I leave a few car lengths of space) and am okay with it. I let teeming oceans of hurried & harried honking cars to proceed in between the gaps of heavy vehicles before I attempt any overtaking myself. It is such a relief to be able to calmly judge overtaking situations by myself, to not have a mad driver honking/flashing at my tail while I do so. Hence, it is with much pleasure I let the mad car crowd go hammer and tongs with these gaps.

It must be so tiring for them to be fighting over and over again for space on the road. It's like they're gluttons for a punishment that they mete out to themselves.

Another example of people thinking that they're immortal. Watch from 0:44 -

Just imagine the fear in the drivers' eyes when they saw him coming head on.

You did well in the situation. General advice is if something abnormal happens on the road, slowing down slightly will help to get a better sense of the happenning.

Another scary/dangerous video in my feed:
The rider, when he saw the buffalo, could have slowed down and moved as far away as possible from the buffalo. This would have been a better defensive technique and the impact would have been less.

Come to bangalore, and you will see it everyday. Worse, it would be a fully laden water tanker coming your way full speed, with no intention of slowing down.

It's bad enough watching the video!

I think I'd have stayed further back from the vehicle in front when doing that overtake. Not because I was expecting that biker, I wouldn't have, but it would have given me time to see them.

The double idiocy of these people is that when they choose to drive on the wrong side, they do it in the fast lane! To me, that is completely incomprehensible. Unless or until the day I want to die.

The only time I can think of myself habitually doing wrong-side-driving is in a small rowing boat on a river. Does that matter? Yes, it does: river has its rules too. What I do: hug the bank. I'm so far out of anybody's way that nobody cares.

I extracted the footage from my dashcam few weeks back, but didn't upload thinking it is not that important.

However, after reading your comment today, had uploaded the video on Youtube just now.
You are too close to the bus, you are leaving about 1 second gap after the bus, ideally it should be 2 on dry road, and 3 or if possible 4 on wet road.
Note that cars have better brakes than heavy vehicles, but brake deterioration in wet conditions is more for cars than heavy vehicles.

Does the first car in the convoy realize that he made the truck he was overtaking put his left tires of the road, see the amount of dust that created.
A loaded truck would not have been able to swerve to accommodate that vehicle.

It is heartbreaking to see that there was one person in the car who had a sane mind, and tried to talk sense into the driver, but failed. Probably ended up getting hurt. If only he could have avoided getting into this car!

I think it is important to talk to youngsters about an exit plan from tough social situations. A code from the teen/youngster to get himself extracted out of any situation without consequence. The code can be anything, Lalbagh, or Lal Kila, or code red. This one time my son's friends were talking about a late night drive, he texted me the code. I called him to say there was a family emergency and I picked him up immediately. No lectures (about how much trouble it was for me), no questions - who the kids were, why he went there, etc. Just appreciate the good call he made.

What's up with The biker guy who was carrying the grass. He was not even bothered and merrily moved on.
The buffalo was startled by the loud modified exhaust of the Bullet!
I feel sorry for the rider but he had no business doing that speed in a narrow village street with Buffalo coming from opposite direction. Buffalos are very calm creatures usually.
