Every 5 years or so, there should be a graded test for private car owners- you can start with a license to drive a 1.0 litre/75 bhp or below car, then move from 1 litre to 1.5 litre (75-120 bhp) and then higher from 1.5 litre (120-180 bhp ). A similar grading should apply for 2 wheelers.

I agree with the sentiment and overall approach of a graded licence, however, restricting ownership to small cars and over time allowing folks to drive more powerful cars is just not sound and will not be appreciated by enthusiasts. Years of experience, while does matter to some extent, is not the only way one improves their skill.

The same approach can be implemented in a different way with the requirement to pass higher grades of road testing to be able to drive cars that are more powerful. That way someone can jump from a Maruti 800 to BMW M3 if they want to but just need to pass the test to get the appropriate licence grade. With no time limits.

Of course, all of these are just wishful thinking. Even if RTOs just enforce the current testing protocol to its full effect without cutting corners, it would reduce a significant portion of road incidents.

Like everyone else, I never wanted to be a part of this thread personally!

But, as fate would have it, I have an entry.

TL;DR: Hit a cow. No injuries/ fatalities

How do I figure out why the air bags did not deploy?

I may have slowed down enough or there may be a sensor issue. The steering wheel has been replaced also.

What data do I ask for from Toyota to be assured everything is fine and the airbags will deploy if necessary?

Airbag deployment is not directly related to slowing down. Airbags deploy if the deceleration caused due to the impact crosses the threshold decided by the sensor.

The best way to figure out why the airbags did not deploy is to extract the report from the car's Event/Crash Data Recorder (EDR/CDR). The EDR report contains the pre-crash data of the vehicle i.e. speed, deceleration, engine rpm, braking, seatbelt usage, etc.

However, you need to determine if your car has an EDR. You can confirm this from Toyota (my guess is that an Innova should have an EDR). Some service centers are not even aware of EDRs. You might have to explain it to them.

If the EDR availability is confirmed, the challenge will be to extract the report. Many service technicians are not trained to extract this data. The service centre may need to get an expert from Toyota's plant to do this.

You mentioned that the steering has been replaced. Has the vehicle been driven after the crash? In crashes with airbag non-deployment, EDR data is usually overwritten or wiped off after a preset number of engine cycles. It is better to get this done as early as possible if the vehicle is being repaired and tested.

Thank you. I will check re the EDR data

The steering wheel was replaced prior to the accident under warranty.

Not slowing down when there is a toll booth ahead with vehicles standing, looks like he was on a suicide mission unless either the accelerator jammed or brakes failed, maybe even both. RIP.

A crowded Minibus overturns on a busy day. Question is why are these faulty buses are allowed to ply on road? What does Bengal Transport Minister has to say about this?

Definitely something happened inside the car. as most of the people inside were old, it could have been a medical condition leading to loss of control.

Looks like the front left tyre goes flat and the driver loses control.
Lucky escape for the pedestrians and the two-wheelers just ahead of and just behind the minibus.

Those mini buses look ancient :( Are they really that bad looking as they are in the video?

And what caused that sudden swerve before the inevitable fall? Tyre burst?

What a harrowing experience for the poor passengers.

This looks like Bangladesh from 2008 and not Kolkata from 2022:Frustrati . Is Kolkata's urban infrastructure still stuck in the last century (with the cheap looking buses from 1970s and even older Ambassadors)? And what's with the road? Vehicles look like they are surfing on waves rather than driving on solid roads!! No other major Indian city has such poor public transport infrastructure. Even small cities like Jaipur have better intra-city buses.

Looks to be West Bengal only as the number plates are WB. What is with the road, all vehicles are jumping!

Certainly not too old, as you could see Swift dzire, Activa, Wagon R etc. A weird overall picture though to imagine.

If this is the case:

Then this accident happened on 30 Jan. No insurance. No fitness certificate. 200 pending cases. What a joke.

No sir, this is Kolkata. And roads, although not as good as Delhi, are alright here. Obviously, the infra development will not be uniform across the city. Quality of buses is mixed. There used to be good Volvos and now we also have electric buses. But there are also a lot of routes that have old buses.

P.S: Clearly you have not been to Bangladesh (BD) or seen a photograph of a BD city :D

watched again. Noticed a policeman on a bike just behind the bus. As soon as bus topples, he momentarily stops his bike in front of it and, to me it seemed, he realizes something and moves again. Video finishes at this point.

Did bus drive break some traffic rule before this incident & over speeding ?

I may be wrong, just observation. May be we can get clues if some other video surfaces.
