In the light of the Shabana Azmi crash, this Jalopnik article is quite instructive.

I work in cybersecurity and hence can say this with authority- you cannot prevent all mishaps. Ever. What you can do is to mitigate the risk enough to make the outcome palatable when the incident does occur.

We need to promote proper use of hazard lights and proper way to park vehicles off of highways. Cars and trucks need to find places where they can pull out safely, where there is at least a few feet of clearance from the solid white line marking the shoulder.

Often I see my cousins and uncles treat any place along the highway to be good place to stop - for pictures, checking tire pressure, bio break, shopping etc. None of these are emergency situations, but still warrant emergency lights to be turned on.

Here's a crazy accident from Bombay!

A speeding Volkswagen car heading towards Andheri (south) on Tuesday night hit a bus after the driver lost control of the vehicle. According to police sources, the driver was speeding and lost control of the car which then collided with the nearby boundary wall erected for construction of Metro. Post which, the car then rammed a bus which was parked on the opposite service road near Shankarwadi bus stop in Jogeshwari. The incident took place around 1 am at Jogeshwari East, Western Express Highway.

What's the deal with GJ 05 cars? The cars I usually kept distance from in Bombay were the ones with Marathi script number plates. lol:

By default you stay away and let them pass when driving Mumbai Ahmedabad. These belong to Surat and they get a tag of bad drivers due to the majority.

This is an accident at a traffic Junction in Nagpur as per news reports. Two people died unfortunately.
https://youtu.be/2srIPsOlb2w
The lights just turn green (watch the screen right) when the pickup comes into the junction. The tipper truck had already probably jumped a red light and was almost halfway across. The truck nudges the left rear side of the pickup and it spins and tumbles. There were about 14 people in the pickup as per the news report.
It looks like the pickup was sure the lights would turn green and hence did not slow down at the junction. The truck shows no regard to a red light. The driver then slowly drives away.

Got a bad news today. The fourth victim in this accident is my ex colleague - Arul Pandiyan. RIP

The accident involving an omni bus, a government bus and an SUV occurred near Edaikal on the Tiruchi-Chennai bypass
Four persons were killed and around 20 injured in a multiple collision involving an omni bus, a government bus and an SUV near Edaikal on the Tiruchi-Chennai bypass in the early hours of Monday.

Police identified three of the victims as Rajan, 23, of Arakonam who was driving the SUV, Sargunam, 34, of Kancheepuram, and Vellaisamy, 39, of Pudukottai district who were travelling in the government bus. The identity of one more person is yet to be ascertained.

A few passengers got down from the bus and were standing on its side when the omni bus heading to Chennai crashed into the two vehicles.

While Rajan, Sargunam, Vellaisamy and another unidentified person died on the spot, the injured were admitted to the Ulundurpet Government Hospital. Further investigations are on.
Police said the government bus heading from Aranthangi to Chennai tried to overtake the SUV when it brushed against the vehicle. Rajan and the bus crew entered into an argument parking both the vehicles on the road.

2 things that went wrong here
1. Stopping the bus in the middle of the highway obstructing the general flow of traffic.
2. Night drivings are becoming more dangerous and having an argument at 3:30 AM?. Who on earth does this?

Question to the members,
Is there a rule to switch ON the internal lights of the bus when its stopped or parked on a highway? This will enhance the visibility and also gives the other vehicles an idea of whats happening with the bus.

In the above accident, there is no way that Omni bus driver behind would have guessed that, the bus is parked/stopped and there are people behind arguing for some nonsense.

One person died when a Scorpio jumped divider and hit a bike rider. I feel the Scorpio driver realized that there is a diversion a bit late and rather than braking hard in a straight line, he hit the road divider. From the video I think appearance of diversion all of a sudden lead to this accident. Location is near Keshod, Gujarat. Please note that the article in below link is in Gujarati language.

Brezza has handled it very well with less intrusion. Hope both the drivers are safe

The vernacular press gave a different story.

The Fortuner tried to overtake the TNSTC bus several times and finally after overtaking, stopped in front of the bus (brake checking kinda) but since the bus couldn't stop, hit the SUV from behind. And then they were arguing in the middle of the highway.

3. The 13 year old child.
Come on, though she is only 13 years old, that is not the age one would be considered a small child.

I agree with all of your points except on the 13 year old. There is no way she has seen scenarios go this bad. I mean, one mistake after the other. I have seen kids run across the street, they cannot possible account to time, speed and distance at that age.

The gravest mistake is committed by the Duster - when he clearly does not have enough visibility and is still speeding. This quite clearly is a busy section of the highway - it is passing through some sort of a market - you cannot possibly be doing highway speeds here. Usually this is the most fatal one. I am glad that the girl is safe.

I'm not commenting on what happened here, but there are several such images where apparently the cars (or buses even!) have taken significant damage from a bike/cycle. Not all these images can be believed. A few months ago, near my apartment, a Swift had reversed into a pole and it left a deep dent in the bumper and rear hatch. Some guys were positioning their bikes behind the car and taking pics with the caption "Car-0 Bike-1" and so on. :Frustrati
