Yes, believe it or not, that IS a full-sized Renault Duster!

One of the deceased was the husband of a local TV news channel's anchors (newlyweds), who herself did the live news bit on the accident later in the evening yesterday.

A sink hole has appeared on Anna Salai in Chennai, where the Metro Railway work was progressing. A city bus and a Honda City were stuck in the hole.

Picture found on Facebook.

I think pulling out that Honda city will cause it more damage than it sustained going into that hole. Pity the owner, for no fault of his. But the position of the car has changed between the pictures. In the first picture it is on its side whereas in the rest it is flat and the entire car is swallowed by the hole.

Imagine the terror felt by Honda City driver, as the car sunk in.

A road cave-in like that is called a sinkhole. The road was after all built on solid ground.

I think it depends on the cause. According to my meagre knowledge, sinkholes have natural causes, but if this is due to being undermined by tunnelling, then it's a cave-in.

But you know what they say: A hole by any other name...

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

If the hole / road collapse occurred due to tunneling for the Chennai metro, it's scary as there is potential of multiple such collapses.
If it was due to the collapse I think the authorities should be sued. Quality control in these projects are good on paper, but I doubt it's good in reality.
If the collapse was due to natural causes, then nothing could have been done to prevent it - it has happened in the most developed of countries too.

I dont know anything on this. But it seems plausible. Can it alter the terrain to create such massive earth movements? If thats the case; are these aspects studied (I mean effect on existing terrain before digging)? Also during heavy rainfalls; such aspects can get ripped open even further.

Point is : How does one assess what the state on the ground would be once tunneling is completed (Assuming tunneling requirements are met).

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Oh great, first it was that roads were hostile due to other motorists, now the roads themselves are starting to swallow down the motorists and their vehicles.

In the name of traffic management we've come a long way haven't we? First there were roads, they weren't enough so we started making flyovers, you know the hundreds of pillars with a road on top that needs cutting of hundreds of trees. Now that wasn't enough either so the metro-trains came in, both in fly-over and underground tracks ruining the entire topography and marking man's stake over everything on earth, including below the surface.

As a pro-environment person, my heart aches looking at such things, India is known to take up infrastructure work with zero-research and it shows, there is only so much that nature can take before such things happen. I used to be part of a plantation drive group and we had read and researched about how balance should be preserved - trees bind the soil and prevent erosion by not only drawing excess water but also by firming up the terrain using their roots. The earths continental plate (first layer) is 5-20 km wide depending on location, and they are reinforced by stones, hard-packed sand and mud and minerals - take them out and do it enough times by laying drain pipes, internet pipes, gas pipes etc and you risk a cave-in. Need I mention the number of trees being cut for the same purpose? When will mankind as a whole open their eyes?

Yep. Looks like you are right. Hindu and other Newspapers also are mentioning it as cave-in.

I have seen something similar (but not so big) in our layout last month.
I usually go walking thru that streets and one day, I saw a yawning hole, about 4 feet in width and about 4 or 5 feet deep. Mostly it has happened in the night and I helped putting some rocks /stone around it so that no vehicles/people will inadvertently fall into that. After couple of days, The BBMP just dumped couple of tractor loads of debris and closed it. Talk about shoddy work!

Slightly OT, one of the videos which chills my spine is the landslide videos doing rounds of the Uttarkhand floods few years back.

Esp. at 0:18, the Qualis with passengers is just about to be swallowed by mother earth and again at 1:47, when the Duster (thankfully empty!) slowly topples into the flood water
