I am not able to understand what the disconnect is. Prevention is always better than cure and there is no better alternative to staying safe than following the basic safety rules while driving.
Having said that, you may not always be responsible for an accident as there are enough morons out there. So when you have an overloaded out of control truck heading towards you , one would always want to be in a car with solid build, 5 star safety rating and all possible safety equipment. That is where the debate about build quality, safety features and the commitment of various carmakers to these issues becomes very important.
Driving safely and following rules is the first basic necessity, but if you or any other road user makes a mistake, one would always want to be in a car that increases your chances ( however small) of escaping with your life.

Not doubting at all. What would I get from that?

A cow had to jump in front of my car to convince my dad about the effectiveness of seat belt. He was rummaging for something in the glove box when I had to brake hard to avoid hitting the cow. The seat belt saved his teeth that day. People need something more substantial than theories to toe the line

I've also observed that people heading from cities onto highways remove their seat belts the moment they cross the city limits and no traffic police would be there on the highway to pull them over and fine them. Majority of Indian drivers wear the seat belt (or helmet for that matter) simply to evade the fine and not for their own safety. This thought process needs to change.

Four years back, I was on my way to office in a company provided cab (Indigo). I was the only passenger sitting on the rear passenger seat. There was a BMTC Volvo bus in front of us and traffic was slow on Old Airport Road. The Volvo started moving after a stop and our car was also accelerating. Suddenly the Volvo bus applied brake. Just at that moment, my driver was distracted for couple of seconds and when he looked front again, found that the Volvo bus has suddenly stopped and he could not apply the brake properly and rear ended the Volvo bus at about 25 kmph speed. Though I wear seat belt most of the time, but that particular cab did not have the buckle in position due to seat cover placement, so I did not have the option to wear the seat belt on rear passenger seat. I had injury in my left eye as my head collided with the headrest of front-left seat. Initially I was not able to see properly, Manipal Hospital was just half kilometre behind and I immediately reached emergency ward of Manipal Hospital in an auto. While there was no internal/major injury, it took one week to get my injured eye back to normal. One of the eye specialists in the hospital said "you are lucky, people loose eye in such impact".

After this accident, I make sure that I wear seat belt each and every time. I had also formally written to the company transport department to ensure that seat belt buckles are provided properly on rear passenger seats.

I learned another lesson that day is that when driving behind a big vehicle maintain additional distance (or if possible change lane) as you may not have much visibility about the things happening ahead.

Reason I asked is because I only narrated about this incident today when Gannu was mentioning how one should not ignore safety even when on a very short grocery shopping drive and this had happened exactly when my friend was out to a grocery shop less than a km away from his home.

PS: I have masked the Parking stickers deliberately.

They think that they are safe. There is a major disconnect between reality and the patterns formed by the cells inside people's heads. One hears nonsense about city speeds, etc. I advise these people to walk into a wall or post and see how much it hurts. It gives an idea of what might happen at ten times walking speed.

Yes Archit, this happened last month near Khanna on Ludhiana-Chandigarh highway.
She was going on leave cum posting i believe. She was posted out from Rajouri going to Jodhpur via her residence in Delhi.
You would notice that the clerk has goofed up with SS in place of WS on the coffin.
Very sad indeed.

Another Zoomcar Mercedes A class totalled by some insane guy who feels that just 5000 is at stake, wonder how people risk their and others lives because they have rented a high end Merc and their liability is just 5k INR, its your life at stake too. Its high time Zoomcar and other rental companies raise the security deposit and do not give high end cars to people below 25 years of age before innocent motorists get involved and killed.

This happened in Dwarka, New Delhi around 12:30 AM. Asked a guy and he said that people in Merc jumped the traffic signal and hit a Honda City at very high speeds, the impact was such that it sent the Honda flying off on a footpath. A class had also hit the divider and was completely shattered from the front.

The photos came out inverted for some reason, uploading again.

Woah hold on just because of one dimwit, I shouldn't be allowed to rent a high-end car? That makes no sense Too much generalization on your part mate. I see many middle aged men driving erratically just the other day I had a Ciaz flash its lights at me from behind while blaring the horn and driving dangerously to keep up. While I pulled up at the signal, and he took a free left, he just stopped his car, rolled his window down and flipped me off for no apparent reason I smiled at him and made my own vulgar gesture just to get back at him. He was in his late forties if not early fifties. I think the just solution is simply stricter licensing norms

Handling over a 170-180 bhp car to a young 19 year old, who knows that just 5000 is at stake, goes out on a rash joyride with his buddies seems fine to you? I am also 23 and know how kids of this age group are. There may be exceptions like you and me because we are a part of a forum like team bhp and have good upbringing, 90% are the other types.

Isn't it understood that you would find more rash drivers along the age group of 18-23 than some one around 28-31 as you are giving the example of that Ciaz guy? There is a reason why car insurance is expensive in america if you are young and the same reason that you have to pay a hefty extra "young driver surcharge" if you are below 25 and want to rent a car in Europe. Heck, some cars are not even available for renting if you are below 23-25.

Young age drivers are considered dangerous drivers world over for a reason. I do not care for the lives of such morons but dread that some innocent biker/cyclist could get killed due to their foolishness.

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

A swift dzire was involved in an accident yesterday at NH31 (the highway connecting Guwahati with Siliguri) near Rangia (some 50 odd kms from Guwahati). The speeding car (according to some, it was doing close to 80-100 kmph) was traveling in the left lane. A speeding motorcycle with two school/college students came from the wrong side and the DZire steered a little left to avoid colliding with the motorcycle head on. The car lost control and hit the railing of a small bridge. The two passengers died on the spot and the car was totaled.

This incident seems a lot similar to the one that took place in Gujarat a few days ago where a bus got off the road to avoid hitting a motorcycle, killing more than 30 people.

This is a very bad practice among people nowadays. They will drive on the wrong side of the highway, simply to avoid traveling a little more distance to take a U turn to get on the highway on the right side. This tendency of Indians to save time by taking the shorter but risky routes harms others more often than oneself. We were involved in a similar incident some months back. We were travelking on the right lane of the 4 lane highway and a dumper truck comes at speed towards us in the same lane. Thanfully, my father made a turn to the left in time to avoid hitting it head on.

One, people shouldn't drive on the wrong side on the highways. Secondly, even if they do, they shouldnt drive at speeds as if it is only them who are driving on the highway and not other vehicles. When will people learn etiquettes?

Witnessed this freak accident as it happened near Coimbatore airport. The Amaze was parked beside the road and had a family of four having their food inside the vehicle. The tempo fellow was trying to overtake another milk container lorry at vey high speeds(For that locality). The tempo rear ended the container lorry and in turn the tempo gate crashed the Amaze. Luckily none of the Amaze occupants were hurt badly while the tempo driver sustained severe injuries.

Assam has suddenly seen roads being upgraded from 2 lanes straight to 6 lanes in the last few years, rest of us got divided 4 lanes with lots of openings, then the openings replaced by overpass underass fly overs etc, a slow increase in average speed. Due to this sudden change many idiotic drivers are still not abituated to the increased speed, and behave like they would on smaller 2 lane roads causing accidents.

Noida shocker: Runaway car ploughs into school, kills a child, injures another
Man who does ‘not know how to drive’ turns on ignition, sends vehicle hurtling through school field.
http://indianexpress.com/article/cit...jures-another/
A five-year-old boy was killed and an eight-year-old injured after a runaway car ploughed through a primary school in Noida sector 27 Wednesday, smashing a gate and bringing down a wall before coming to a grinding halt.
A man who “does not know how to drive” turned on the ignition of the car while trying to retrieve a pen drive from inside the car resulting in it ramming into a Primary School at Atta-II, during lunch break, said police. “The car was in reverse gear and the foot of the accused was on the accelerator. It covered around 125 m at 70 to 80 kmph,” said Gaurav Grover, Circle Officer (City).
The child killed was identified as Dharmender Kumar Gupta. The injured boy, Amit Biswas, is admitted to hospital. The children were unable to exit the path of the car as it came crashing through the back gate of the school, covered the entire length of the field and hit them even as it crashed into the wall near the school’s front gate, said police sources. The children were playing near the wall. Both were rushed to the Vinayak Hospital nearby, where Dharmender died, added the sources.
Dr Abhishek Sharma, medical superintendent of the hospital, said, “Dharmender had several external cuts on his chest, abdomen and head. He was suffering from severe internal bleeding as a result of being crushed under the weight of the wall. We tried to resuscitate him for nearly an hour, but could not save him. Amit is also suffering from internal bleeding and is in an unconscious state, but we managed to put him on support and his condition is improving.”
Police have arrested Shailendra Sandeep, 23, who sent the car out of control. Sandeep, who works at Welfare Society for the Elderly in sector 27, had entered his boss Pratap Singh Chauhan’s car to collect the pen drive. He turned on the ignition to listen to music and the car, which was locked in reverse gear, went crashing through the school.
Sandeep said, “I do not know how to drive at all, the car was on gear lock and in reverse gear. When I turned the key, the car went crashing through the gates it was parked in front of and backed up till the end of the field.”
Passersby abused and assaulted Sandeep till the police showed up and arrested him, said sources. A member of the school’s staff said, “I was on the first floor when all this happened in a matter of a few seconds.”
Police initially registered an FIR under IPC section 304A (causing death by negligence), but later changed it to section 304 (culpable homicide), said sources
