Absolutely. But isn't such overloading common in Indian roads? This truck would have passed many traffic policemen but it still was plying on the roads. At least the designers should have taken such incidents into account before putting up the physical structure.

As it is mentioned that it was an yet to be opened tollway, what was missing was arresting beams which is put up before underpass or low height bridges, that prevent such mishaps.

According to the news this happened today morning at the yet to open toll plaza on the Mangalore - Udupi highway in front of NITK. The driver of the lorry seems to have misjudged the height and has pulled the entire roof of the toll plaza along with the vehicle.

from the last picture, seems like the lorry got stuck against the roof cross member and peeled the roof - im wondering, how did the lorry manage to get "in" - is there an upward slope in the direction of the lorry travel ? if it was a level surface, the lorry must have done "push" damage, not "pull" damage , right ?
EDIT : spoke too soon earlier => might be, the top surface of the cargo is higher in the back than the front ; and also, looks like this toll booth is not operational, so he must be at more than crawling speed and hence went so much "in".

Saw this freak accident at a road crossing Raja Basanta Roy Road in South Kolkata yesterday morning. The roads here cross one another at right angles like in many older localities. The Honda City was heading southwards crossing R.B.R. Road, while some Maruti (the driver fled and no one was able to tell which Maruti it was???)coming from the eastern direction on the R.B.R. Road hit the Honda on its left front door. The Honda driver must have panicked and his car swerved right hitting a parked man-pulled rickshaw.
The result is here. Luckily, the rickshaw was parked and its owner was sipping tea nearby when this happened. As said, the Maruti fellow fled the scene.

some frontal panels of the offending Maruti have got left back. Hope part or full of the number plate dropped off too so as to facilitate nabbing of the runaway dude.

Those panels have crumbled quite a bit.

Yes, it was an Omni as per the evidence left by its erring driver and as detected by you. Since it happened at around 10.00 am, there were people around. I am not sure if anyone had noted its registration number.

Sorry, duplicate post, kindly delete.

A freak accident that came in the news. 7 people including the driver of the SUMO passed away in the accident, the SUMO had picked up a member of the family who hired the cab, and was coming from airport. News speculates either the driver dozed off or the cab possibly had a mechanical failure.

One member of the unfortunate family survived the mishap, he is the 9 year old son of one of the victims, seems to have been trapped inside the SUMO for more than half an hour but still escaped with minor injuries. Miracle for the survivor. Very sad news.

People, please do not use the phrase freak accident for anything short of stuff falling out of the sky.

Usually, the stuff that some press writers and others describe as "freak," is actually not even unusual.

Today afternoon, near Jakkur aerodrome , opp HP petrol pump, Bangalore. The bus brushed a swift, lost control and ended up here. Accidents in India | Pics & Videos-img20151108wa0023.jpg

But howcome the headlight surround / reflector lying near the grill doesn't look like it's from an Omni?

Looks more like the ORVM cover of the Honda City to me. Or is it not?

If you look at the last picture, I think its the width of the vehicle that the driver misjudged. The pole is pulled forward so much that the roof is touching his vehicle

While i am glad the injuries are less, the opinion from the witness kinds of endorses speeding and the heroic driver who could steer well and hit the pillar !

Spotted this accident on the Madurai exit from Salem byepass.

It looked like a blind lane change from right to left that went wrong. The passenger side was damaged badly but I think there was no one sitting that side.

Regarding the truck, either it would have been parked or may be it was very slow.

:FrustratiWhen will the government make under-run protection bar mandatory on each and every heavy (high ground clearance) vehicle sold in India?
I think so we should pray to god that such accidents should happen with our beloved politicians such that they understand the importance of such simple gadgets.:deadhorse
