The news report says that the car was being driven at 150+ kph speed. Looking at the impact, it looks like a high speed crash but 150 kph :Shockked: on this road is suicide and shows how irresponsible people are. That road looks like a single lane state highway and I don't know how the witnesses calculate the speed of the vehicles just by merely glancing at it. I think they possess some kind of superhuman ability.lol:

I agree with you on this. This kind of news is very common and not able to digest the fact that the media prints such information every time. Leave alone the fact that the car was being driven at 150 kmph, it is even difficult for the eye witness to tell if the car was being driven fast or rash.

^^^While it is debatable whether the kids were doing 150kmph or not, with today's cars, getting to 150kmph is not really a big deal. Sustaining it for long would be an issue though and depends on the road.

That flyover, especially the part that goes to LB Road is badly designed & a hazard. I remember reading in the newspaper that MTC drivers have in the past refused to ply on it. Don't know if that is still the case. Slowing down definitely helps, but that does not change the fact that the design is bad.

Yeah, I am not sure how can someone deduce the speed that quickly (even the naked eye). Its extremely difficult to tell the difference between 120 and 150. However, the speed still looks high looking at the impact on the car.

2 girls and 2 guys, with a girl dead. What the hell were these guys upto with that kind of speed. In my college I have been asked to drive fast but hell I was not 'that' stupid even at that age.

I do not know how the road conditions were but to be driving at insane speeds; you need to be insane.

MTC Buses don't use the Flyover to enter LB Road.

The ramp towards LB Road is pretty narrow and the turn is also sharp. Quite a few accidents have happened in this turn. Having said that, common sense should tell a driver to slow down in such a turn. If it doesn't or if the driver doesn't listen to it, such a moron is going to fall or crash elsewhere if not here.

It's just a left-hand turn, albeit a bit narrow. What's so hard about that? Perhaps they could have made it less sharp, perhaps the barriers could be painted dayglow orange or somthing; I'm not saying it is either perfect, or couldn't be improved, I'm just saying that it doesn't present a huge challenge to an averagely competent driver.

Anyway, I usually go straight there, and move to the left to take a left turn at the end --- and often a bike tries to overtake on the left, seemingly wanting a flying lesson. I wonder if the late biker might not have being doing that, rather than taking the turn? But there were witnesses, so I suppose not.

Since I live in the Thiruvanmiyur side of this bridge, I have reason to take this left turn frequently. The turn is not very sharp - it, if anything, has longer curvature than the corresponding turn at surface level.

We have discussed another curve (in the context of a similar accident) elsewhere in Chennai - the one on top of the flyover at the TTK Road/CPR Road junction, in front of old Life Style building. My view is that both the curves are absolutely fine to take if one follows the prevalent speed limit within Chennai. Even about 10 kmph over the limit is OK, but beyond that these two curves can be dangerous.

Spotted this Toyota Camry which went in to ditch a while ago near vasai tungareshwar, no one was injured and the vehicle was looking good except the front bumper which landed in water. Accident happened as it was trying to avoid another vehicle and skied into ditch.

Just saw a massive accident involving a Qualis and a SETC Bus just after Melmaruvathur (some 120 kms from Chennai).

The Qualis is smashed to pieces and the government bus has toppled. Not sure how bad the impact is for the occupants. Hope that everyone is okay. You can see the Qualis and the Toppled bus in this photo.

Though complaining about bad road infrastructure is a favourite Indian pastime (and justifiably so), a majority don't seem to drive any more carefully to compensate for it. In fact, the exact opposite seems to be the case everyday. Worse the infrastructure, more cavalier the driving attitudes. What gives?

Saw this on Facebook.

Car plunged into the Narmada Canal at Jhakharpura village near Bodeli, in Chhota Udepur district, Gujarat. Five youths between 20-30 years of age, travelling in it, were killed.

Quote:

The over-speeding car's driver lost control over the steering, following which the vehicle first rammed into the railing of a bridge over Narmada canal and then fell into the water, he said. Police rushed to the spot, and with the help of local swimmers, pulled out the car and extricated the bodies from it.

Saw this Toyota qualis stuck in slush at the entrance of tungareshwar vasai. The right side of the vehicle was completely sunk in mud, It was travelling fully loaded and landed in a slushy rut. The tyres lost traction and were digging their own grave, a tractor finally came to rescue and showed the way.

The side impact has crushed the car.

Two spot dead (boy and girl on front seats), two injured, one among them (the girl) critical. Speeds of 100 plus kmph (police say 140kmph), after dinner, the drive on a comparatively open stretch of road (NH 6), time 12.30 am.

None were wearing seat belts. Alcohol is suspected to be the culprit, as police say they found empty bottles inside the car. But confirmation is awaited.

A ghastly mishap that has been a hot topic here at Nagpur. I saw the car, now parked at the Ambazari police station. A total wreck !!

Saw this in today's The Telegraph. Three members of a family killed in a car crash on Durgapur Expressway.

http://www.telegraphindia.com/114081...p#.U-ewfa6rE6s

The report states, amongst others, that:

Three members of a Calcutta family died in a car accident on Durgapur Expressway this afternoon. Subir Sen, 61, his wife Trina Sen, 48, and cousin Tirtha Sen, 60, died after the speeding Maruti Esteem they were travelling in hit a divider and overturned in Hooghly. “The Esteem was travelling at high speed. Subir, who was driving the car, lost control and hit a divider. The car overturned,” said an officer of Dadpur police station. Neighbors said Subir was a careful driver.

The report states that the family started from Kolkata around 2.30pm. If so, this accident must have occurred at around 4.00 pm.
