Four IIT-Delhi students killed in accident in Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer/New Delhi: Four IIT-Delhi final-year students, who were on a road trip to west Rajasthan to celebrate their placements, were killed and two other students injured when the Innova they were travelling in overturned near Jaisalmer on Sunday morning.

The students were returning after camping out at Sam and were 5km from Jaisalmer when one of the tyres burst, resulting in the vehicle rolling over several times. While three students died on the spot, another succumbed to injuries in hospital. The Innova driver and two students — a girl and a boy — were being treated at MDM hospital in Jodhpur and were reported to be stable.

The deceased have been identified as Pallav Aggarwal from Chattisgarh, Bihar resident Archana Mandal, Diksha Gautam from Delhi and Mayank Goel.

"The six were travelling in an Innova hired from a travel agency. The driver could not control the vehicle after a tyre burst. Archana came from Gudiya Bakibaka in Bihar and Diksha from Yamuna Vihar in Delhi. Pallav hailed from Koria village in Chattisgarh's Mahendragarh district," said Kotwali police station in-charge Jetha Ram.

The IIT Delhi campus was in shock and disbelief on Sunday evening, as students and teachers gathered on the campus to remember those who died. "All six students had been placed in good firms. They were very excited about it and wanted to celebrate. No one would have imagined it would turn out this way," said a friend of Archana, a student of electrical engineering.

"Archana was a high-spirited and a very friendly girl. She used to represent IIT at inter-colleges sports meets. Archana and Diksha were room-mates. Diksha had been placed by Goldman Sachs and they were both very excited. Earlier, this month they had gone on a trip to Goa. I cannot believe that they are no more with us," the friend added.

The two injured students are expected to be brought to the capital by Monday afternoon. The bodies are also likely to reach the campus by Monday afternoon.

"We are ensuring that the bodies are brought here by Monday afternoon so that they can soon be handed over to the families, who have been informed about the accident. Most of them are on their way," said Rakesh Kumar, IIT registrar.

With barely two months left for the dual degree holders to complete their course and most of them being placed already, this is usually a time for celebration for final-year students. On Sunday, the first floor of Kailash Hostel where two of the deceased girls' lived, wore a deserted look as most final-year students were out.

Yesterday I drove next to this accident spot. The smashed Bolero was still there, and lots of cops were standing around.

Saw the pictures. It says it was a head on collision but the bus has suffered hardly any damage whereas the Bolero is totally smashed. I think the Bus might have climbed over Bolero.

You may want to see small overlap crash test videos carried out by NHTSA. This looks like a very small overlap crash at high speed.

Background: I stay in a village in Himachal, off the state highway, altitude 7500-9000 ft, narrow single lane hill roads with some areas with guardrails. This incident is about a turn without a guardrail.

One week ago it was raining incessantly, it was foggy and windy, and and is usual in the area, many men stay back in the village bazaar 'bars' drinking. This night 4 people finished their drinks around 9PM, and one of them took the task to drop them off in his Maruti at their respective villages and then go home. The total trip would be 10 kms.

After dropping off two of them and heading back home, the driver lost control of the vehicle on a turn and the vehicle plummeted down the hill 250 ft or so before coming to a stop. Both the passenger and driver were thrown out of the vehicle, one had serious head injuries and the other had multiple fractures on both his legs. Their cell phones were lost somewhere in the tubule down.

This was at 9PM, and temperature was around 5 degrees with heavy rain, and they landed in the middle of an apple orchard about 600 metres from where I stay, no one heard the crash or any subsequent screams.

Their families looked for them through the night along the road, but the driver had at the last moment chosen to take a different route and they were looking at the wrong place.

The crashed car was found only at 7AM, it was too late for the driver, he succumbed to his injuries around 4AM, the passenger said later on when he regained consciousness. The passenger is being treated in Shimla, hopefully he will walk again.


Attached photos show the path the car took tumbling down the steep hill, and the damaged car loaded on a pick-up. Incidentally the pick-up got stuck and had to be towed, therefore I went down in the Thar with my tow rope.

Hopefully this leads to lesser incidence of drink driving in the area, but probably not. Please don't drink and drive, and discourage anyone who does. On the Shimla -Kufri highway (NH21) I see countless tourists enjoying the cold weather and snow, but with a bottle of liquor rested on the bonnet, later that evening one can see the same cars being towed away after a crash, many a times fatally.

Another speeding Volvo claimed 5 lives in Kerala. Article in Manorama mentions that the Volvo dragged on for around 250m after the collision before coming to a halt. Volvo was KA registration and did not have speed limiter fitted in it.

Five people were killed and a child critically injured when a speeding Volvo bus rammed a car in which they were travelling on NH 47 at Nangiyarkulangara near Haripad on Thursday noon.

Haripad police said the accident took place around 12.30pm. The Thiruvananthapuram-bound bus, coming from Bangalore, was trying to overtake a KSRTC bus when it collided with the Maruti 800 car. Eyewitnesses said the car fell into a nearby gorge on the impact of the collision and police and rescue workers had a tough time in extricating the victims. None of the passengers in the bus, owned by Kallada Travels group, was hurt in the accident.

Even if the bus were to have a speed limiter, it would not have made any difference. I guess the Volvo driver in a hurry to overtake the bus rammed into the car coming in the opposite direction.
People should be taught driving on 2 lane roads and 4 lane roads separately before issuing driving licence.

Speed at the time of impact could have been considerably lower and may be the rear seat passengers in the car might have had a better chance. If it took the bus 250m to stop after hitting the car, you can imagine the speed it was having. I agree its all "may be" but even if it could have saved a single life, it is worth it.

Sad part is that the lack of awareness among the drivers is not the issue here. Its possible to educate or create awareness if the lack of understanding was the issue. Its purely the attitude and arrogance of being safe in that monster vehicle and being asked to go faster. If these same arrogant drivers are asked to undergo a driving test at the RTOs, they'll be the perfect drivers you can imagine. Once they are no longer under scrutiny, they get back to their old self. In a lot of cases, these operators have a competition in terms of who reaches in the shortest travel time and the drivers have the pressure from the owners to go faster.

That is the main reason these Volvo drivers continue the rash driving. They know that they will not get hurt even in case of an accident.

You made a valid point here. It is the competition factor amongst the private buses that results in accidents like these. Not only owners, i believe on some occasions, it is the passengers who urge the driver to zoom so that they can reach their destination.
Of course whether they reach their destination or final destination (death) is a point of debate.
