Re: The Riding Gear thread

Hello Everyone,

I bought a CB350 a month ago. Since then I've been buying riding gear every weekend. So far I've bought:
  1. Helmet - MT Hummer. Entry level MT with ECE 22.05 rating. Planning on upgrading to MT Thunder 4 SV later.
  2. Jacket - Rynox Air GT 4. I use my full sleeved training shirt as base layer. It doesn't look out of place whenever I remove the jacket and the inner lining doesn't stick to it when it's damp with sweat.
  3. Gloves - Rynox Tornado Pro 3. The thick stitching is causing my pinky finger muscles to pain since the past few weeks, so much that now I'm only wearing the glove on the other hand till the pain subsides.
  4. Boots - Royal Enfield Huntsman. Initially I was eyeing for RE-TCX Cabo WP shoes, but they don't offer good grip on loose gravely surfaces, as evident from their outsole pattern. Huntsman, I thought was the next better option. Those can be worn in office with anyone noticing. Also, they are quite comfortable to wear for a full day of office/riding.

The only thing pending is a pair of riding pants. One can remove their jacket if they feel hot, but is pretty much stuck in the pants for the entire duration of the ride. Hence, I'm looking for something that is as comfortable and ventilated as a pair of good denim jeans. I'm open to both denim and non-denim options and can spend about 12k at max if required. Lower the price the better. I'm not willing to get stuff from abroad as my previous experience with the customs has left a bad taste. Please suggest few good riding pants meeting the requirements.

Thanks!

Ventilation + Comfort = Riding pants (not denim).

Riding jeans are likely to feel far hotter than riding pants any day. They’re also far less forgiving in all seasons riding. Get your riding denims wet and get your riding pants wet in comparison and you’ll know what I mean. 12k should land you some very decent mesh style riding pants from brands like Held, Revit, Komine etc. Do check them out. The mesh style should provide much better ventilation than riding jeans.

Stores like Pathpavers and High Note Performance in Delhi, LABS and Speed Merchant in Mumbai store a wide range. There are several other stores as well. I’m pretty sure there are some good stores in Pune as well - one in Baner and one around Camp area but I can’t recall the names off hand.

LABS, HNP and Pathpavers have a decent online catalogue as well to browse through.

t3rm1n80r, it is quite possible that there is a mismatch in the stitching between the two gloves. As a result, you are facing this significant discomfort only on one hand. I have tried out different Rynox gloves in Cochin and found that the fitment on the left and right glove was different. Instead of struggling with your current pair, raise a warranty claim and get a replacement set.

I think youre slightly overthinking the whole ventilation aspect for the riding pants. Axe77 has already listed out almost all the available options in the segment. I would throw in the Royal Enfield Tso Kar riding pants into the suggestions box, as well. Its easily available, pan India, and is waterproof, without being stuffy or heavy. Ive used it over thousands of kilometers, for touring and Sunday morning rides.

Re: The Riding Gear thread

Good Morning! Have been talking about a decent mid sizer for purchase, ended up with in T-BHP verbiage a 'pre-loved' RE. Okay back to the topic of this thread, Gears. What good is it, if I can't brag about sweltering in the daily run to office wearing my newly acquired riding gears. Here it goes -

For me -
  • Riding Jacket - A daily wear Brown Revit Eclipse Mesh Jacket - Decent fit, fairly priced, seemingly lightest amongst similar costing products and looks very much like everyday wear.
  • Gloves - Rynox Storm Evo3 Gloves - Had one half gauntlet gloves from a decade back, surprisingly still usable. Only concern being the need to take the gloves off to operate mobiles. So the new pair, and while at it got a full gauntlet one. Easy to wear, good fit and works like a charm with mobile screens.
  • Shoe - No riding boot yet, most don't pair well with my office wear. Yes, at least initially I hope to ride daily. So a sparingly used old Woodland boot will do the duty. Any recommendations though for longer rides?
  • Riding Pants - Remember riding daily to office, need my formal trousers. So none for now, will procure one before my 'Biking experience together' rides.
  • Helmet - MT Thunder 4 SV Exa Gloss Red Helmet, why this? Fits my head very well, not over the top graphics and didn't cost a bomb. Has the usual safety certifications, and hope to never test their validity.
For spouse -
  • Riding Jacket - Don't need a daily wear, open to options. Strangely the shops I went didn't had much options for women and even lesser stock of sizes. So none yet, any good recommendations please?
  • Gloves - My good lady gets the hand me down stuff, recall surprisingly usable half gauntlets.
  • Shoe - Will purchase along with mine, matching matching you see
  • Riding Pants - None for now, will procure one before my 'Biking experience together' rides.
  • Helmet - MT Hummer Galant E5 Matt Red, I picked a Red, she picked this red amongst the other Reds. Comfortable to her Yes, cost oh so Yes.
For kid -
Straight up he ain't be squeezing in-between for my 'Biking experience together' rides, he is also not welcome in office. Poor fella is gonna ride with me at best to run some errand, which again may be few here and there.
  • Helmet - Yes, Vega Junior buds half face. While there was a full face option, it was wavy on his head, and absolutely no other option.
  • Gloves - No
  • Shoes - Bata
  • Jacket - No

My go-to jeans fitting is Wrangler Skanders. They fit me so well that I can comfortably sleep in them. Hence I was under the impression that denim would be the most comfortable among all other types. Based on your response, I'm assuming the kevlar lining would be restricting the airflow in the case of denim riding pants.

Since I'm new to motorcycling, I assumed the root cause of the pain was that I'm not used to the throttle gripping technique yet, which was enhanced by the stiff gloves. I'll check those again and raise a warranty claim if needed.

Key question: How isn't a full mesh jacket more comfortable in hot weather?

I am planning to upgrade my jacket and pants to AA rated ones like yours. I am looking at Alpinestars because they have the best airbag tech that I want to purchase soon for my long tours. But they don't have full mesh touring jackets.

I've tried Revit, but somehow their arms have always been too baggy for me. Did you also look at comparable options from Alpinestars?

Re: The Riding Gear thread

Full mesh jacket is always more comfortable in hot weather in the city. I use a textile jacket with vents for the added protection. When on tours or with highway speeds the textile jackets do fine. In city, during summer peak the vented jacket are not so helpful imho.

Good Morning! Another week and another set of purchases, biking mania is getting crazier in the house.

  • RE E-39 Short Riding Brown Boot to address my feet safety for the longer runs, woodland otherwise. To be fair I used the boot within city, and apart from the oddity of having the trouser/jeans tucked in the boot, functionally it was extremely comfortable.
  • Also got RE Ceara riding trousers, comfortable during the short trial. Will comment further post a longer ride. Haven't used them in day to day rides.

  • RE Windfarer Black jacket, comfortable fit and size. Better than regular wind-cheaters, should serve our purpose. No appropriate shoes or Riding pants for her yet.

Do let us know how the RE Ceara and the boots perform for the daily rides. I am also in the same situation for my daily rides to work, would appreciate the feedback before my purchase.

Re: The Riding Gear thread

Need some inputs from folks who have travelled with helmets. Are they allowed in cabin baggage? Youtube shows lot of people travelling with their helmets in cabin, whereas when I enquired the indigo call center they said I can check it in but not bring it to the cabin baggage. I called them twice, first a lady was searching a lot and then call got disconnected while I was on hold, then I connected to a guy replied superfast with a no, but said can be carried in checkin. The speed at which he said no made me doubt

Is this a specific issue with indigo only? Do other airlines allow carrying helmet?

I’ve never had an issue carrying a helmet in any airline, both domestic and international although I do not have any specific recollection of whether or not I ever flew Indigo while carrying it in the cabin. I really can’t imagine why they should have an issue.

Yes this is why I had doubt, the way he said no in such hurry that I guess he didn't even check the item list? The lady was patient enough to search for me but sadly call got disconnected. Eitherway if CISF is fine with it, I can always put it inside a bag after security and carry

I will recheck with them at night.

I don't think there is any restriction. You need not mention it to them specifically also.
If you carrying it inside a helmet bag or any other bag there should be no issues. Nowadays they don't even ask what is there in the bag.
During security checking also you should be fine as it does not have any sharp object.

Re: The Riding Gear thread

Thanks for the replies ! I called them again in the evening, I have the feeling the indigo staff is going by guesswork (I was shocked to hear helmet has glass as per the staff , I had to explain that the visor is plastic ). So asked them if CISF is fine with my luggage then it is ok with them? They said yes.

So I enquired with BIAL and they said:

"We would like to inform you that motorcycle helmets are allowed to carry in hand baggage. However, we recommend you to connect with our security team managed by CISF (Central Industrial Security Force), a Government of India sovereign Agency at 080 2200 1514 and proceed as per their advice."

So it seems helmets won't be an issue (As many have travelled already). Even then I will do due diligence and call up CISF helpline and confirm their policy.

Thanks all for responding.

I generally always carry a helmet with me when I’m going outstation because I never know when I’ll feel like renting a bike and riding. Never had an issue thus far, with Indigo or otherwise.
